The Kaikōura 3 day trial was held at King’s Birthday weekend and attracted 61 solo riders and 7 sidechairs from across New Zealand. This was the 80th year that this trial has been run since it began in 1946.

As usual we rode at three properties over the weekend starting with Trewin’s Farm at Birches Rd, Oaro on Day 1, a return to Rakanuiat Peketā on Day 2, and finished at Schroder’s Farm under Mt Fyffe on Day 3. Many thanks to the property owners and those who went up the week before and set the sections.

The weather was kind again this year with no rain or frosts (That is 2 years in a row!) This meant the properties were as dry as we have seen them. The sections on the first two days were fairly straightforward, however on Day 3 the sections were more difficult, especially for Green and Yellow, so getting a good result meant being at your best on Day 3. The three best things about the weekend were:

1.The great support from families with 11 families having two generations of riders taking part.

2.The top two riders in Red (T2) both being Junior riders. Zack Furniss took out Day 1 overall, Finn Pearce won Day 2, so both were tied at the end of Day 2, then Zack managed to win Day 3 becoming the youngest Expert and Overall Winner of Kaikoura at age 12. Congratulations to both these young riders who showed great skills.

3.The sidechairs which always provide some entertainment. It’s great to watch, though seems a way to make covering offroad terrain more difficult.

Thanks to everyone who supported the event, especially those who travelled from the North Island or the Deep South. It is great to have you join us for the weekend.

Next year will be the 80th Anniversary of the first event held in 1946. We hope you can join Pioneer next year to celebrate this milestone.

Special thanks to Lynette for the photos, despite still recovering from a knee injury that still limits her mobility.

the 1923 Cooper/Wilcox white & red #25 car Actually the seventh car built, originally a Miller works entry but sold to HCS car company for Earl Cooper a fortnight before Indianapolis race; fitted with truss rods left and right; new for Howdy Wilcox at Indy (May 30), then Cooper for rest of season (#2 with HCS-style radiator, 2nd KCMO Independence Day); for Cooper in 1924 (white & blue #2, then pale green following Studebaker sponsorship deal, but retaining radiator shell of rival car company!, 2nd Indianapolis, 1st Fresno Fair, 2nd Charlotte Columbus Day); renamed “Weaver Special†(new owner? sponsor?) during winter of 1924/5 (green & jade #2), 1924 bodywork, rear wheel brakes, V-type radiator and supercharger added for Ralph Hepburn (#17) rest of the year (3rd NY State Fair, 2nd Salem) and early 1926 (#9); sold to Cliff Woodbury/Mike Boyle (orange #9), rebuilt to 1.5 litres (red & silver #36, 3rd Indianapolis, 2nd Detroit June); for Hepburn (white & blue #19) and Jack Petticord (#22) in 1927, presumably retained by Woodbury/Boyle and campaigned on dirt tracks in 2-litre form (2nd Detroit June, 1st Detroit July, 1st Detroit October); subsequent history unclear, but possibly to Louis Schneider for 1929 (red & white #31, but possibly ‘2306′!), and also driven by Herman Schurch, Jack Buxton and Bert Karnatz; likely broken up and frame widened to be used in the building of 1930 two-man Indy Car “Bowes Seal Fast Special†#23 for Schneider.

Ask me for money - I get a shot. Keith agreed to $2 - then once the shot was done he wanted $20 - just gave him a smile and the two! I'm sure he could have used the twenty tho.

Used a PC-e 24 for this shot, not a portrait lens but seems to work OK - you have to let your subject know that you will be in his face when using a 24mm.

Yeah, so it turns out that if you don't connect the USB cable to both the drive and the computer, the computer won't recognize the disk. Ooops. It is failing, but isn't dead yet. Boy am I embarrassed for crying on social media today.

So to redeem myself, let me tell you my favorite way to do B/W in GIMP:

1. use curves or levels to get the color version how you like it.

2. then, use Colors -> Decompose to break it into "channels". I use the RGB method.

3. You will end up with a new image with three layers: red, green, and blue. I put the creamiest layer at the bottom. Then I change opacity of the top two layers to appropriate amounts to add in gritty detail.

In this case, red was creamiest and blue was very gritty. I made green and blue both 10% opaque. That retained the creamy nature, and added enough dirt to make it interesting.

4. Use Image -> Mode to change from grayscale to RGB.

5. I save this file version, then flattened it.

6. I dragged the new layer back into my old image and continued with a merged B/W and color image.

Hope this helped! (For today's FGR, requesting tutorials.)

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is the longest canal in Northern England at 127 miles long. It passes through 91 locks with a summit level of 487 feet.

At Leeds, it joins onto the Aire and Calder Navigation. The Rufford Branch links the canal with the Ribble estuary near Preston. This gives access to the Ribble Link and the Lancaster Canal.

The Leigh Branch runs from Wigan to connect with the Bridgewater Canal..

In Liverpool an extension is being constructed from the Stanley Dock Branch, by way of the Pier Head, to Albert Dock.

These are Inter positives, a person was selling on line for $10,000.00 dollars. Film here was a 1983 Inter positive, (no sound added to the film at this stage of reproducing them/ coping them.

I was told by a film camera man in town where I live, who use to shoot episode of the A-Team.. That the finished negative is like GOLD, and ready should never be touched, Paramount would make a replacement negative from the main negative. Then they can make more prints from the 2nd negative, and also make more negative copies as well. ( from there they can always make a new Negative preserving the original .. here is the process:

1). During the processing of a film, Master negative film is taken off the fault shelf

2). Then a special inter positive print is made from the original negative film,

3). The Inter positive is run along with the Sound to make an inter negative print.

4). In which the final positive print is made for distribution. So the process takes four steps to the finished product ... Original Negative, Inter positive, Inte negative, Final Positive Print.

But then again there are three steps before the processing,

A) THE FIRST SHOOTING NEGATIVE inside the camera,

B). DEVELOPED TO A RAW INTER POSSITIVE. This raw inter positive print is made from the camera original negative film. (Clapper footage, cut and scenes removed, checked over,(dailies viewed and cut/edited) This film then is the 1st cut footage Inters positive, (no sound)

Sound is collected by the sound man on tape, and stored separately,

C). A negative is made from this raw inter positive... and there you have your 1st Master Neg.

The it starts process 1, 2, 3, 4,

The 1983 version Inters positive, was probably made from a back up copied negative of the original negative .

Most always a genuine Original 1966- 1969.. Star Trek Film have an orange hue to the Film. If stored in a COOL LOCATION it may not loose its color based on time itself. Clip value is based of what's on the Film; if it's what you can see on DVD, it could have come from many 35mm copies sold to TV stations over the years. Or it could be a re shot scene the director did not want, which would make it come from the RAW INTER POSSITIVE, look just like and standard shots. There are way to check the grade and film stock, and color but only pro Like Dave T, via Star Trek History could tell you.

If it the Black and White, it could be a daily 1966, or it could be a Black and white copy of a normal episode that were sent to TV stations as well, (Black and White TVs back then... not everybody wanted color copies. Star Trek History People could check this for you, so know what you have some black and white clips they could be dailies or standard copy reprints.. It could be $1.00, or $25.00,or $100.00.

Clapper boards are the same, Black and white clapper are rare, Color clapper boards are also very collectable as well and we know they come from 1966 to 1969...RAW INTER POSSITIVE

Most always a genuine Original 1966- 1969.. Star Trek Film have an orange hue to the Film. If stored well COOL LOCATION may not loose much of its color. If the color is very good, it's most likely a standard re print. These pieces of film are a true piece of Trek History and always will to enhance your collection and to give you pride of ownership for many years to come. So keep them cool...

1. Once a week (or so) I download my whole CiteULike library as a BibteX file onto my computer.

2. Then back this up into a Subversion repository. [This is a version control back up system which means I can recover any version, and it is stored on another server further reducing risk of loss]

3. The PDFs stored in the Mendeley folders are backed up everytime I run my TimeMachine back up. This is a Mac OS back up system that backs up incremental changes onto a back up hard disk. There are similar systems for other operating systems.

The back up regime means that should CUL or Mendeley or both become unavailable or unusable I have both a full copy of my reference library with all my notes and keywords in a BibteX file, and a full set of PDFs in nicely labelled folders so I can find them. So many applications accept BibteX files there would be no trouble finding another to import my library to.

Should my computer fail as well there are backups of all the PDFs in the TimeMachine and my BibteX library can be retrieved from the Subversion repository.

Binondo Suites is a 3 star business hotel. For their rate, it's worth the stay. The rooms are cozy and clean - way better than what hotels in Malate offers. Most of the furnitures and amenities are very new. You can still smell the 'newly painted' scent of the closets. They have modern safety locks for every room. Bathrooms are new and neatly kept. Service is quick and simple. Nothing overly done which is a good thing :)

Halebidu was the 12th century capital of the Hoysalas. The Hoysaleswara temple was built during this time by Ketamala and attributed to Vishnuvardhana,[1] the Hoysala ruler. It enshrines Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara, named after the temple builder Vishnuvardhana Hoysala and his wife, Queen Shantala.[2]

Then it was sacked by the armies of Malik Kafur in the early 14th century, after which it fell into a state of disrepair and neglect.[2]

2. Then, you take the body of the crawfish, hold it up to your mouth and crush it and suck out the mustard.

[Note: It’s called mustard because its color and texture. It’s actually the ‘guts’ and internal organs.]

3. Pull the meat from the tail and enjoy!

[Note: I make a mean Garlic/Cajun Spice clarified butter for dipping the tail meat.]

While in Lancaster we took a drive in the country and came across this farm. All the barns there are painted white, and all the buggies appear to be in immaculate condition. The frames and wheels are black, and they are all enclosed with grey canvas. The light was very bright when I shot this, so i made 2 copies in PS, one +2 and one -2, then combined them with the original in Dynamic Photo HDR. I then processed it in PS with a film grain filter.

The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star (or T-Bird) is a subsonic American jet trainer. It was produced by Lockheed and made its first flight in 1948. The T-33 was developed from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 starting as TP-80C/TF-80C in development, then designated T-33A. It was used by the U.S. Navy initially as TO-2, then TV-2, and after 1962, T-33B. The last operator of the T-33, the Bolivian Air Force, retired the type in July 2017, after 44 years of service.

The T-33 was developed from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 by lengthening the fuselage by slightly more than 3 feet (1 m) and adding a second seat, instrumentation, and flight controls. It was initially designated as a variant of the P-80/F-80, the TP-80C/TF-80C.

Design work on the Lockheed P-80 began in 1943, with the first flight on 8 January 1944. Following on the Bell P-59, the P-80 became the first jet fighter to enter full squadron service in the United States Army Air Forces. As more advanced jets entered service, the F-80 took on another role—training jet pilots. The two-place T-33 jet was designed for training pilots already qualified to fly propeller-driven aircraft.

Originally designated the TF-80C, the T-33 made its first flight on 22 March 1948 with Lockheed test pilot Tony LeVier at the controls. Production at Lockheed ran from 1948 to 1959. The US Navy used the T-33 as a land-based trainer starting in 1949. It was designated the TV-2, but was redesignated the T-33B in 1962. The Navy operated some ex-USAF P-80Cs as the TO-1, changed to the TV-1 about a year later. A carrier-capable version of the P-80/T-33 family was subsequently developed by Lockheed, eventually leading to the late 1950s to 1970s T2V-1/T-1A SeaStar. The two TF-80C prototypes were modified as prototypes for an all-weather two-seater fighter variant, which became the F-94 Starfire. A total of 6,557 T-33s were produced: 5,691 of them by Lockheed, 210 by Kawasaki, and 656 by Canadair.

"Film d'essai" (test film) of my French range-finder 35 mm camera Foca PF2B (year 1956) after the shutter new adjustments.

I used here a 36 exposure Ilford Pan100 film exposed for 100 ISO using a Minolta Autometer III with a 10° finder for selective measurements privileging the shadow areas. The Foca Oplar lens1:2.8 f=5cm was fitted with a FOCA "AUV"(Anti-UV) filter and a Genaco metal shade hood, both push-on 42mm.

Rue Bodin, March 13, 2023

69001 Lyon

France

After exposure, the film was processed using Adox Adonal (Agfa Rodinal) developer at dilution 1+25, 20°C for 9 min.

The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body adapted to a Minolta Auto Bellows III and a Minolta Slide Duplicator using a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5 at a reproduction ratio of 1:1. The reproduced RAW files obtained were processed in LR prior the the final JPEG editions.

All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg.

About the camera and the lens:

The Foca type PF2B (PF for "Petit Format") was constructed in France by the company "Optique & Precision de Levallois" (OPL) starting from 1947. It was manufactured in the Chateaudun OPL factory, route de Jallans, France, in 1956 among a late series of the PF2B. The factory, constructed in 1938, is still at the same place under the name of SAFRAN now producing precision devices for aerospace appliances.

The camera is equipped with the collapsible OPLAR lens (a Tessar formula) 1:2.8 f=5cm. The focal shutter of the PF2B has timing of 1/1000, 1/500, 1/200, 1/100, 1/50 and 1/25s plus the B pose. A slow exposure device below 1/25s could be installed by the aftermarket service and was installed in series for the FOCA PF3 type.

-------

Object of the adjustments :

Due to the presence the original factory seals on the shutter adjustments, I knew that the camera has never been adjusted of serviced since 1956!

Until now the 1/25s, 1/50s and 1/100s suffered from inconsistent curtains travel speeds causing band inhomogeneities in the exposure. The 1/1000, 1/500 and 1/200s were however coherent. I proceeded here as follows :

1- The shutter being on B setting, proceeding by half turns only on the adjustment screw, I increased the spring tension of the first curtain by 2 half anti-clockwise turns causing more regular and fast opening of the first curtain.

2- Then I did the same on the second curtains to get a similar speed of closure.

3- I checked visually that all speed gives homogenous opening scans from 1/25s to 1/1000 (proceed without the lens mounted).

Likely the 1/25s is still slow but I decided to see the results obtained on a test film. The exposures ae now all homogenous. Following the densities given by the Sony A7 during the digitalization, one could deduce that 1/50s gives +0,3 EV more than expected (ie 1/30s instead of 1/50s) and 1/25s gives +1.3 EV (ie 1/10s instead of 1/25s). After the test film I added 1/2 turn to the first curtains to increase the travel speed.

The Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star was an American Airborne early warning and control radar surveillance aircraft operational in the 1950s in both the United States Navy (USN) and United States Air Force (USAF).

The military version of the Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation was used to serve as an airborne early warning system to supplement the Distant Early Warning Line, using 2 large radomes (a vertical dome above and a horizontal one below the fuselage). It replaced the TBM-3W used by the USN. Some EC-121s were also used for Signal Intelligence gathering (SIGINT). The EC-121 was introduced in 1954 and phased out in 1978, although a single specially modified EW aircraft remained in USN service until 1982.

The USN versions when initially procured were designated WV-1 (PO-1W), WV-2, and WV-3. The USAF Warning Stars served during the Vietnam War both as electronic sensor monitors and as a forerunner to the Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS. USAF aircrews adopted its civil nickname, "Connie" (diminutive of Constellation) as reference, USN aircrews used the nickname "Willie Victor".

Since 1943 the Lockheed Constellation had been in USAAF service as the C-69. The use of the Constellation by the USN for patrol and airborne early warning duties was first investigated in 1949, when the USN acquired 2 Lockheed L-749 Constellations. First flown on 9 June 1949, the PO-1W carried large, long-range radars in massive radomes above and below the fuselage. As the radomes possessed considerably more side area, the vertical stabilizers of the PO-1W had to be enlarged. After the PO-1W (redesignated WV-1 in 1952) had proved that it was possible to operate large radars on aircraft, the USN ordered the WV-2 based on the L-1049 Super Constellation. The WV-1s were transferred to the Federal Aviation Agency in 1958–1959.

The WV-2/EC-121D was initially fitted with a dorsal AN/APS-45 height finder and a ventral AN/APS-20 search radar. These were later upgraded to AN/APS-103 and AN/APS-95 radars, although not simultaneously. The crew commonly numbered 18, 6 officers (2 pilots, 2 navigators, 2 weapons controllers) and 12 enlisted (2 flight engineers, 1 radio operator, 2 crew chiefs, 5 radar operators, 2 radar technicians).[4] However, when North Korea shot down a Navy EC-121 in 1969, a crew of 31 was on board.

Orders were placed totaling 142 PO-2W Constellations based on the Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation with deliveries beginning in 1953. The PO-2W was redesignated WV-2 in 1954. In 1962, with standardization of aircraft designations within the Department of Defense, the WV-2 then became the EC-121K. A total of 13 of these were converted to WV-2Q Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) aircraft (becoming EC-121M in 1962). 9 were converted to WV-3 weather reconnaissance aircraft (WC-121N in 1962). The EC-121K was also operated by Training Squadron 86 (VT-86) at NAS Glynco, Georgia for training of Student Naval Flight Officers destined to fly both the EC-121 and the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye. At NAS Glynco closure VT-86 transferred to NAS Pensacola, Florida in 1973, the squadron's last EC-121 was also flown to NAS Pensacola being stored in the collection of the National Museum of Naval Aviation where it still remains. A single aircraft became an NC-121K, the electronic warfare variant assigned to Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 33 (VAQ-33) at NAS Key West, Florida. The aircraft was the last EC-121 in operational service, flying until 25 June 1982.

The USAF received 10 RC-121C and 74 EC-121D Warning Stars also based on the L-1049 beginning with diversions from the Navy contracts in October 1953. The 10 RC-121Cs became trainers, designated TC-121C. Between 1966 and 1969, 30 retired USN EC-121s were transferred to USAF and converted in EC-121Rs as sensor-monitoring aircraft. Of the 74 EC-121s, 42 were converted to the EC-121H upgrade beginning in 1962 and in 1969, 15 of the remaining EC-121Ds and 7 of the EC-121Hs were further upgraded into the final operational variant, the EC-121T, serving as an AWACS prototype in Southeast Asia in 1972. Five EC-121Ds were modified to be broadcasting aircraft for psychological warfare operations, the predecessors of the EC-130 Commando Solo.

Some mixed messages received this morning: reported by the reliable natural satellite dish.

- Report and analysis by natural satellite dish - nicknamed couscous - real name c0sm0s.

1. Mr. Might-be Vampire mentioned about visit but not going to work in the garden with our gardener, whether it is his garden or our gardener's garden.

2. Then he said not able to.

3. Probably he meant can't visit.

4. Probably the first visit he mentioned is because our gardener has finally understood the meaning behind the problem with the back garden.

Analysis on other messages:

After a few days of puzzling of Mr. Might-be Vampire's talking about his work place, we finally understood that the place where Carrot lives is probably the best place to work. Warm and cozy, sheltered.

Sparrow B: Really? I think he lives on a couch? So there is a heater somewhere? If I'm shivering, the heater there will keep me nice and warm while I do my work there?

Flower: Ya, Mr. Might-be Vampire said there is a heat pump. And there are heated cushions too that you can lie your head on when you feel tired.

Sparrow B: Is there any food supply? Don't say that I'm greedy. I'm just wondering whether I should bring my own food. Or if there is food, does it cost much to eat? If it cost $15 for a meal everyday, I think it's too expensive. I am willing to spend like at most $30 in 4-5 days for 2 meals. If I bring my packed lunch, it will be cheaper. They just cost about $4-5? includes electricity costs, per meal.

Flower: Food is not always readily available, so it's best that you bring your own. i know you eat a lot in the morning especially. Mr. Might-be Vampire might not charge you anything for the food he supplies, but anyway, it's good to be self-sufficient.

Sparrow B: OK... I'll think about it whether to change my workplace to that place.

Flower: I think your friend has decided. She will do the grocery shopping today. Go brush your feathers. This is the easiest thing to get done but somehow she is still hesitating. She might pop in Bunn1ngs to have a look, and she needs to fill up gas as well, since the price has gone down now. Now she about 1/2 tank left since her last refill at J town? So she might take a while, she is also thinking of getting a h3ll pizza from Plimm3rton town but that opens at 11am - then she can eat for 3 meals! She really couldn't decide such trivial things today. But anyway, she got to do something. Back around 12pm? Might go out around 9.30am.

SB: I'll try to help her decide.

Flower: Thanks Sparrow B. The garden needs her maintenance. She can't keep thinking and not doing.
