Avebury is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles which is located around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, south west England. Unique amongst megalithic monuments, Avebury contains the largest stone circle in Europe, and is one of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain. It is currently used as both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary Pagans.

Constructed around 2600 BCE,[1] during the Neolithic, or 'New Stone Age', the monument comprises a large henge, surrounded by a bank and a ditch. Inside this henge is a large outer stone circle, with two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the centre of the monument. Its original purpose is not known, although archaeologists believe that it was most likely used for some form of ritual or ceremonial usage. The Avebury monument was a part of a larger prehistoric landscape containing several older monuments nearby, including West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill.

By the Iron Age, the site had been effectively abandoned, with some evidence of human activity on the site during the Roman occupation. During the Early Mediaeval, a village first began to be built around the monument, which eventually extended into it. In the Late Mediaeval and Early Modern periods, locals destroyed many of the standing stones around the henge, both for religious and practical reasons. The antiquarians John Aubrey and William Stukeley however took an interest in Avebury during the 17th century, and recorded much of the site before its destruction. Archaeological investigation followed in the 20th century, led primarily by Alexander Keiller, who oversaw a project of reconstructing much of the monument.

Avebury is owned and run by the National Trust, a charitable organisation who keep it open to the public.[2] It has been designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument,[3] as well as a World Heritage Site, in the latter capacity being seen as a part of the wider prehistoric landscape of Wiltshire known as Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites.[4]

Mount Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts, was founded in 1831 as "America's first garden cemetery" or "rural cemetery". With classical monuments set in a rolling landscaped terrain,[2] it marked a distinct break with Colonial-era burying grounds and church-affiliated graveyards. The appearance of this type of landscape coincides with the rising popularity of the term "cemetery", derived from the Greek for "a sleeping place."

Long Beach, Washington

Travel & Leisure Magazine named the Long Beach boardwalk as one of the top eleven in the nation. The Today Show featured the Long Beach boardwalk as the most unique. And we have to agree.

The boardwalk sits just outside the reach of the mighty Pacific and stretches for almost half a mile through the rolling dunes. It’s only a short walk from most downtown Long Beach activities and is a popular attraction for visitors and locals alike.

So what makes this boardwalk so amazing?

1. You won’t find crowds on the Long Beach Boardwalk. It isn’t covered with carnival rides and hot dog vendors (those are downtown!). It appears as if suspended in the grassy dunes.

2. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean or the sunrise over the Willapa Hills.

3. It’s a wonderful spot to snap photos for the family album or Instagram. Be sure to share your adventures! #longbeachwa

4. It’s the perfect stroll to take with ice cream or any sweet treat or a special someone.

5. If you’re wanting lunch with a view, have a seat at one of the picnic tables along the way and chow down on some takeout from one of our local restaurants.

6. The boardwalk will inspire you to wander! Look for steps leading off into the dunes or down to the shore.

7. It’s a comfortable spot to look for wildlife. Watch for whales, eagles, and shorebirds. Be sure to bring some binoculars.

8. Enjoy panoramic views of the North Head Lighthouse, beach, and surf.

9. Learn about the environment and history at one of the interpretive displays.

10. It’s a safe place to watch storms roll in across the Pacific during storm season.

11. Park at the Bolstad beach approach and walk down the boardwalk to [pickled fish] for a cocktail.

12. The boardwalk makes a gorgeous backdrop for small, intimate weddings or elopements.

13. On windy, bright days, hang out on the boardwalk to watch kites drift through the sky.

14. You can keep going! If your short stroll along the boardwalk came to an end too soon, simply hop on the Discovery Trail. It crosses beneath the boardwalk and runs south all the way to Ilwaco and north to a bronze sculpture of Clark’s Tree behind the Breakers.

15. Find plenty of free parking on either end of the boardwalk as well as public restrooms.

Location: Park at the Sid Snyder beach approach or the Bolstad beach approach in downtown Long Beach for easy access to the boardwalk.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii) is a historic mosque in Istanbul. The mosque is popularly known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior.[2]

It was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. Its Külliye contains a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is still popularly used as a mosque.

Pt. 2

It started snowing on the afternoon of the 8th and continued through the 9th of February, which brought the birds flocking to the feeders :)

The red kite (Milvus milvus) is a medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards, and harriers. The species is currently endemic to the Western Palearctic region in Europe and northwest Africa, though formerly also occurred just outside in northern Iran.[2] It is resident in the milder parts of its range in western Europe and northwest Africa, but birds from northeastern and central Europe winter farther south and west, reaching south to Turkey. Vagrants have reached north to Finland and south to Israel, Libya and Gambia.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is the first rural cemetery in the United States, located on the line between Cambridge and Watertown in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Boston.

With classical monuments set in a rolling landscaped terrain,[2] it marked a distinct break with Colonial-era burying grounds and church-affiliated graveyards. The appearance of this type of landscape coincides with the rising popularity of the term "cemetery", derived from the Greek for "a sleeping place." This language and outlook eclipsed the previous harsh view of death and the afterlife embodied by old graveyards and church burial plots.[3]

The 174-acre (70 ha) cemetery is important both for its historical aspects and for its role as an arboretum. It is Watertown’s largest contiguous open space and extends into Cambridge to the east, adjacent to the Cambridge City and Sand Banks cemeteries. It was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2003 for its pioneering role in 19th-century cemetery development.

The astrolabe shows a two-dimensional map of the heavens, and its particular use was to find the direction of Mecca, which Muslims face when they pray. It was also used to determine the times of prayer which were astrologically defined.

I believe it said "We <3 Terrible Dudes" but I could be wrong. Beers were $2. It was a long night.

Day 96.

I had to get up a bit earlier this morning because the car was coated in solid ice, and by the time I'd scraped and defrosted I found I was five minutes earlier than usual so I decided that I'd see if the cows that I pass on the way to work every morning were in their field.

They were! I've taken photos of this field last year in similarly frosty conditions but I love these mornings when it's frosty or misty or both.

I've also been fed up not getting any outdoor photos for a while, so this killed two birds with one stone.

As usual I couldn't decide which of the several photos to use so I've posted them all.

Features:

1. Protein fiber

2. It is full of luster and has a unique "silk-ming feeling". It is smooth and comfortable to wear, elegant and luxurious

3. The strength is higher than wool, but the wrinkle resistance is poor

4. Heat resistant than cotton and wool, but poor light resistance

5. It is stable to inorganic acid and sensitive to alkali

Washing method:

1 avoid alkaline detergent, should choose neutral or special detergent for silk

2. Wash in cold or warm water, and do not soak for a long time

3. Gentle washing, avoid wringing, avoid hard plate scrubbing

4 should be dry, sun, not dry

5. Part of the silk fabric should be dry-cleaned

6. Dark silk fabric should be rinsed with water to avoid fading

7. Wash separately from other clothes

Don't wring

Maintenance method:

1 exposure to the sun, so as not to reduce the firmness and cause fading yellow, poor color

Avoid contact with rough or acid or alkali substances

3. Before collection, wash, iron, cool and dry. It is better to fold them up and wrap them with cloth

4. Mothballs should not be placed, otherwise white clothes will be yellow

5. Avoid auroras when pressing

Clandon Park House is an early 18th-century grade I listed Palladian mansion in West Clandon, near Guildford in Surrey.[2]

It stands in the south east corner of Clandon Park, a 220-hectare (540-acre) agricultural parkland estate which has been the seat of the Earls of Onslow for over two centuries. The house and gardens were gifted to the National Trust in 1956,[3] but the rest of the park remains in private ownership.[4] Some of the house's contents have also been acquired by the Trust in lieu of estate duty.[5]

Construction of the house, designed by Italian architect Giacomo Leoni, began about 1730, and the interiors were finished by continental sculptors and plasterers in the 1740s. It replaced an Elizabethan house. The park was landscaped by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown in 1781, and there are two formal gardens on either side of the house. Nearby is a Māori meeting house, one of only three outside New Zealand, that was brought to England in the late 19th century. After being transferred to the National Trust, the house underwent restoration before it was opened to the public, and later became a wedding venue and filming location for period dramas.

The house was badly damaged by fire in April 2015, probably caused by an electrical fault in the basement, leaving it "essentially a shell". Thousands of historic artefacts, paintings, and items of furniture were lost in what has been described as a national tragedy. In January 2016, the National Trust announced that some of the principal rooms on the ground floor would be fully restored to the original 18th-century designs, and upper floors will be used for exhibitions and events.

History[edit]

The estate and Elizabethan house, together with Temple Court Farm at Merrow, was purchased in 1641 from Sir Richard Weston of nearby Sutton Place,[6] by Sir Richard Onslow, MP for Surrey in the Long Parliament and great-grandfather of Thomas Onslow, 2nd Baron Onslow, who rebuilt it. Many members of the Onslow family followed political careers; three of them, including Arthur Onslow, were Speakers of the House of Commons. Their portraits would later hang in the Speaker's Parlour at Clandon House.[7]

Engraving of the house, showing the west front and deer park, c. 1824

The house was built, or perhaps thoroughly rebuilt, in about 1730–33 (the latter date is on rainwater heads) by Thomas Onslow, 2nd Baron Onslow to the design of the Venetian architect Giacomo Leoni. It is a rectangular building of red brick and stone dressings. Clandon House interiors, completed in the 1740s, featured a two-storey Marble Hall, containing marble chimney pieces by the Flemish sculptor Michael Rysbrack, and a rococo plasterwork ceiling by Italian-Swiss artists Giuseppe Artari and Bagutti.[8]

Clandon Park was landscaped by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown in 1776–81, replacing a French garden and transforming part of a disused canal into an ornamental lake.[9] A porte-cochère was added to the principal facade in 1876. A sunken Dutch garden was created by Frances, Countess of Onslow at the north front of the house in the late 19th century. In 1895, the house was investigated for paranormal activity by the Marquess of Bute and Ada Goodrich Freer on behalf of the Society for Psychical Research. During World War I, the Onslow family created and managed a hospital in Clandon House for the war injured.

Wondabyne is a small railway station located next to Mullet Creek, which connects 6km down to the Hawkesbury River. The stations platforms are only a few metres long and it is the other station in Australia that has no road access.

The station appears to be only used by those doing water activities on the adjacent creek (there is a pontoon next to Platform 1, the creek side), and those bushwalking through the escarpment next to Platform 2).

It is quite a walk to the nearest road.

The wooden walkway has several advantages over a dirt floor:

1) The flat, wide surface makes it easy to move wheelbarrows of cacao in and out

2) It's accessible for disabled visitors

3) The spaces between boards and on either side make it easier to clean

4) It's pretty :)

Note that the drying decks are only about 1.5 feet above the walkway, making it easier for staff to get into the decks to rake the beans.
