A Roman column stands in Minster Yard in the English city of York. Originally built around the first century, by the soldiers of Legio IX Hispana, it was reused by Legion VI in the 4th century. It is believed to have been part of a group of sixteen freestanding columns (eight on each side of the nave), supporting the walls of an earlier church on the site.

The column was discovered beneath York Minster during a 1969 excavation, and was given to the City of York three years later to mark the 1900th anniversary of the city's founding.[1]

The column is 7.6 metres (25 ft) tall and constructed of Magnesian Limestone and millstone grit.[2] It now stands in front of the Minster School, in Minster Yard, on the southern side of York Minster.[2] --- WikiPedia

The white-browed sparrow-weaver (Plocepasser mahali) is a predominantly brown, sparrow-sized bird found throughout central and north-central southern Africa.[2] It is found in groups of two to eleven individuals consisting of one breeding pair and other non-reproductive individuals.

Marshall oversees a Chicago bound Metra movement on the steps of Tower A-2 at Western Avenue. Work took me within walking distance of this location so when I posted a random shot of the tower a few hours prior on a group chat, Marshall chimed in saying what your there now? I was just there 5 minutes ago, do you wanna tour of A-2? It didn't take me long to respond.

The grey-headed fish eagle (Haliaeetus ichthyaetus) is a fish-eating bird of prey from South East Asia.[2] It is a large stocky raptor with adults having dark brown upper body, grey head and lighter underbelly and white legs.[3] Juveniles are paler with darker streaking. It is often confused with the lesser fish eagle (Haliaeetus humilis) and the Pallas's fish eagle. The lesser fish eagle is similar in plumage but smaller and the Pallas's fish eagle shares the same habitat and feeding behaviour but is larger with longer wings and darker underparts. Is often called tank eagle in Sri Lanka due to its fondness for irrigation tanks.[4]

Although not currently considered to be threatened with extinction, the population of grey-headed fish eagles is declining, the result of numerous and varied threats. The loss of suitable wetland habitat, deforestation, over-fishing, siltation, persecution, human disturbance and pollution resulting in a loss of nesting sites and reduced food supply.[1][4] Tingay et al.[9][10] noted that these statements are based mostly on anecdotal evidence, although their studies found a definitive negative link between human habitation and grey-headed fish eagle nest occupancy rates in Cambodia. Another critical threat to the Cambodian populations of the grey-headed fish eagle on the Tonlé Sap is the damming of the Mekong River for hydropower, which will possibly have adverse effects on critical flood regimes of the Tonlé Sap.[9][10]

Climbed Mount St Helens on Canada Day. It was a pretty special climb for several reasons. 1) I climbed it with a friend I've known for almost 30 years, 2) It was my 20th summit of this mountain, 3) It was Canada Day!

Sorry to post and run, I will be back soon to visit everyone's photostreams and comments.

P&W FPCH rolls through Southport, Connecticut on Metro North's New Haven Line. Three C40-8's along with a CSOR SD40-2 lead the train. Note the primer paint on the hood of the SD40-2. It was horrendously tagged on a previously trip to Queens. Instead of letting it run with the graffiti G&W placed primer paint over the vandalism.

There were several tip-offs:

1. Covered bridges don't have a lot of windows. The point of covered bridges was to shelter the bridge from the elements. Uh, windows?

2. It had two lanes. Ain't no genuine two lane covered bridges (I think).

3. It had a higher clearance than usual.

4. It had a pedestrian walkway on the other side.

5. There was a plaque on the bridge that said it was built in 2001.

BUT, the light was right and, in monochrome/sepia, the sky was spectacular. Finally, with my patented bookmark crop, I think the picture came out pretty good.

For tonight's blue EMD, we look back to upstate New York's short-lived Saratoga & North Creek, and its smartly-painted BL-2. It had just returned from North Creek, and the last few passengers, crew, and a few railfans are still milling around.

Unlike other tourist-era operators of the former D&H branch to North Creek, the S&NC operated out of the Amtrak station at Saratoga in an effort to attract more riders. It probably would have worked, had they not been caught up in the collapse of owner Iowa Pacific Holdings.

Running 15-20 minutes late at Vermillion due to heavy traffic at Newport and Red Rock, the Borealis has resumed running with Superliner cars since the normal consist had corrosion problems. Track speed here is 79 MPH (it shows 60 for track 2). It was so dark and gloomy the photo actually is more appropriate in Black and white.

Lower Silesia is an exceptionally interesting area of Poland. This also applies to its railway network, which has the oldest railway lines, the longest tunnels, the highest points (above sea level) and the most scenic routes in Poland. Legends also say that right here lies the legendary Nazi Golden Train, which is said to have transported tons of gold and other precious goods of the Third Reich. What we can be sure of however is that in Lower Silesia we'll also find the steepest railway line on the Polish rail network - the local line from Mysłakowice to Karpacz.

The line is known for its extremely steep slopes, which reach more than 5% on the steepest parts on a length of 50 meters. Its entire average incline is 2.2% - it climbs up 154 meters on its length of 7 kilometers. The steepest part however starts after passing the old station in Miłków, which is when trains start climbing towards Karpacz at an average incline of 3.4%. The steepest point of 5.1% lies just under a kilometer before the terminus at Karpacz. Due to those extreme conditions it was decided that the work trains on this very special line be hauled with the use of a heavier locomotive - this being a 6-axle SM31, of which just under 10 remain in service in Poland as of now.

The image shows the train on the break point of the line, where its slope flattens from 4% to just under 1%. This place used to house the junction of a lumber mill in Brzezie Karkonoskie, which makes the line appear this way to this day. The SM31-009 was waiting in this very spot on 8.03.2025 for the Plasser tamping machine to finish works around Miłków.

Castle Kilbride is the former residence of James Livingston, a Canadian member of parliament, and owner of flax and linseed oil mills. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in March 1994.[1][2]

It was built in Baden, Ontario in 1877 and named after Livingston's birthplace in Scotland. The major feature of Castle Kilbride is the interior decorative murals in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The trompe-l'œil technique used in the murals gives the illusion of a third dimension. The building is also an outstanding example of an Italianate villa of its place and time, and at the time of its building was a tribute to the reputation of its owner as the so-called 'Flax and Oil King of Canada'.

The rufous-bellied thrush (Turdus rufiventris) is a songbird of the thrush family (Turdidae). It occurs in most of east and southeast Brazil from Maranhão south to Rio Grande do Sul states, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and central regions of Argentina.

It is one of the most common birds across much of southeastern Brazil, and is known there under the name sabiá-laranjeira (Portuguese pronunciation: [sabiˈa laɾɐ̃ˈʒejɾɐ]). It was famously referred to in the well-known first strophe of the Brazilian nationalist poem Canção do exílio. The rufous-bellied thrush has been the state bird of São Paulo since 1966, and the national bird of Brazil since 2002.[2] It is highly regarded in Brazil, where its song is often heard in the afternoons, but specially during the nights between August and November, where thousands of them sing until the sunrise, and is often seen as "the spirit of the Brazilian commoner".

Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest state park in Nevada, USA and was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968.[2] It covers an area of almost 42,000 acres (17,000 ha)[3] and was dedicated in 1935. It derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays.

Valley of Fire is located 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas, at an elevation between 2,000–2,600 feet (610–790 m). It abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the Virgin River confluence. It lies in a 4 by 6 mi (6.4 by 9.7 km) basin.

Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. The rough floor and jagged walls of the park contain brilliant formations of eroded sandstone and sand dunes more than 150 million years old. Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates.

The park entry from Interstate 15 passes through the Moapa Indian Reservation. The park has a visitor center that should be visited by anyone planning any off-road activities.

The site is marked as Nevada Historical Marker #150.

Certainly a very good visual representation of the progression of power over time for GLC, the OSTN still puts on the classic show in Cohoctah as they fly through town. The ever-classic GP35 leading, with a newer GP38-2 sandwiched between one of their new units, a de-rated SD45, now classed as a SD40-2. It's all still blue, just a different shade of it.

Marsilea drummondii is a species of fern known by the common name nardoo.[2] It is native to Australia, where it is widespread and common, particularly in inland regions. It is a rhizomatous perennial aquatic fern that roots in mud substrates and produces herbage that floats on the surface of quiet water bodies. It occurs in water up to one metre deep.[3] It occurs in abundance after floods.[4] It can form mats on the water's surface and cover the ground in carpets as floodwaters recede. It is variable in appearance and occurs in many types of wetland habitat. In general the frond is made up of two pairs of leaflets and is borne erect when not floating.

The plant produces sporocarps which can remain viable for 50 years and only release spores after being thoroughly soaked.[3] The sporocarps are dispersed by birds that eat them but cannot digest them, and by flowing water.[3] The sporocarp is used for food by Australian Aborigines, who collect, roast and grind them to powder which they mix with water to make a dough.[5][3][6][7] The sporocarp can be toxic due to high levels of thiaminase, which destroys thiamine.[2] Consumption of large amounts can cause beriberi. It has been known to poison sheep,[8] as well as humans, including the leaders of the Burke and Wills expedition.[9] Nardoo must be prepared properly using heat before consumption to destroy the thiaminase.[4][5]

Another image of a springbok in the first comment box.

The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized brown and white antelope-gazelle of southwestern Africa.[2] It is extremely fast and can reach speeds of 100 km/h (62 mph) and can leap 4 m (13 feet) through the air. The common name "springbok" comes from the Afrikaans and Dutch words spring = jump and bok = male antelope or goat.

The specific epithet marsupialis (Latin: marsupium, "pocket") derives from a pocket-like skin flap which extends along the middle of the back from the tail onwards. When the male springbok is showing off his strength to attract a mate, or to ward off predators, he starts off in a stiff-legged trot, jumping up into the air with an arched back every few paces and lifting the flap along his back. Lifting the flap causes the long white hairs under the tail to stand up in a conspicuous fan shape, which in turn emits a strong scent of sweat. This ritual is known as stotting or pronking from the Afrikaans meaning to boast or show off.

The Arabian oryx or white oryx (Oryx leucoryx) is a medium-sized antelope with a distinct shoulder bump, long, straight horns, and a tufted tail.[2] It is a bovid, and the smallest member of the Oryx genus, native to desert and steppe areas of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian oryx was extinct in the wild by the early 1970s, but was saved in zoos and private preserves, and was reintroduced into the wild starting in 1980.

In 1986, the Arabian oryx was classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, and in 2011, it was the first animal to revert to vulnerable status after previously being listed as extinct in the wild. It is listed in CITES Appendix I. In 2011, populations were estimated at over 1,000 individuals in the wild, and 6,000–7,000 individuals in captivity worldwide.

A Qatari oryx named "Orry" was chosen as the official games mascot for the 2006 Asian Games in Doha,[3] and is shown on tailfins of planes belonging to Middle Eastern airline Qatar Airways. It is the national animal of the United

The first church, now the Diocesan Museum of Amalfi, was built in the 9th century on the ruins of a previous temple.[2] A second church was built to the south in 10th century, and this is now the cathedral. By the 12th century the two churches formed a single 6 aisle Romanesque church, which was reduced to 5 in the 13th century to allow the construction of the Paradise Cloister,[3] in the Arab-Norman style.

The remains of St. Andrew were reportedly brought to Amalfi from Constantinople in 1206 during the Fourth Crusade[4] by Cardinal Peter of Capua. In 1208, the crypt was completed and the relics were turned over to the church.[2] It said that later on manna issued from the saint's bones.[5]

The bell tower was constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries in front of the first church, topped by an elaborate crown decorated with marble and majolica in the Arab-Norman style, also seen in other churches in southern Italy in this period. The chapels inside are variously Gothic and Renaissance, with the nave decorated in the Baroque style in the 18th century.

In 1861, part of the facade collapsed, damaging the atrium. The whole front of the church was then rebuilt to a design by architect Errico Alvino in a richly decorated manner drawing on Italian Gothic and especially Arab-Norman styles, similar to but more ornate that the original, completed in 1891.

Citing Wikipedia: "The Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork, Poland[1] (Polish: zamek w Malborku; German: Ordensburg Marienburg) is the largest castle in the world by surface area.[2] It was built in Marienburg, Prussia (now Malbork) by the Teutonic Knights, a German Roman Catholic religious order of crusaders, in a form of an Ordensburg fortress. The Order named it Marienburg (Mary's Castle). The town which grew around it was also named Marienburg.

The castle is a classic example of a medieval fortress and, on its completion in 1406, was the world's largest brick castle.[3] UNESCO designated the "Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork" and the Malbork Castle Museum a World Heritage Site in December 1997.[4] It is one of two World Heritage Sites in the region with origins in the Teutonic Order. The other is the "Medieval Town of Toruń", founded in 1231 as the site of the castle Thorn.

Malbork Castle is also one of Poland's official national Historic Monuments (Pomnik historii), as designated September 16, 1994. Its listing is maintained by the National Heritage Board of Poland."

Another contemplative ramble through the city cemetary.

Judging by the state of the war in Ukraine, the UK economy, the cossie liv (cost of living as said by Gen Z), that atrocious Sam Smith video , then I guess we’re ready for Gabriel to start his final trumpet blast in preparation for judgment day.

Anyways… Olympus EM1 mk3 and Zuiko 25mm f1.2 … it’s been a while since I shot with the 25mm Zuiko, I’d almost forgotten what a ‘normal’ perspective lens photo looked like

I could have thrown these pictures away I say. Truth I probably could not. The sky was rather fruity and the out of focus view, confirmed with every setting available gave me some bright results to share. This is one picture in five edits.

Do not blame the Helios-44 2 it needs an adjustment to be made and secured. This Helios 44 ƒ2 one of the much vaunted Soviet copies of the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm ƒ/2 the Soviet manufactured ones with sought after wonderful bokeh both from factory standard output and also now with a growing multitude of modern fanciful adjustments many making dream like pictures. The adjustment to reach to reach precise Star Focus is possibly going to feature in later uploads.

Kapuskasing River Dam located in the Town of Kapuskasing in the Township of O'Brien located in the District of Cochrane in Northeastern Ontario Canada

The river begins at Kapuskasing Lake in geographic Kapuskasing Township, Algoma District,[3] near the railway point of Elsas, on the Canadian National Railway transcontinental main line and the location of Elsas railway station served by Via Rail Canadian trains.[2] It flows northeast under the mainline, takes in the right tributary Nemegosenda River, passes over the Jackpine Rapids (bypassed by the Jackpine Portage), the Loon Rapids, the Buchan Falls and the Clouston Rapids, and takes in the right tributary Dunrankin River. It heads north over the Cedar Rapids, heads over the Woman Falls and Old Woman Falls, and passes from geographic Shanly Township, Algoma District[4] into geographic Cargill Township in Cochrane District.[5]

The Kapuskasing River continues northeast over the White Otter Falls, the Bakatase Falls, the Camp Three Rapids and the Big Beaver Falls, takes in the right tributary Saganash River and reaches the town of Kapuskasing, where it is crossed by Ontario Highway 11 and the Ontario Northland Railway line (formerly Canadian National Railway, originally the National Transcontinental Railway). It passes over a hydro dam, the Spruce Falls, takes in the left tributary Lost River and right tributary Remi River, and reaches its mouth at the Mattagami River in geographic Clay Township, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of the community of Fraserdale. The Mattagami River flows via the Moose River to James Bay.

Nikolskaya Street (Russian: Никольская улица) is a pedestrian street in the Kitay-Gorod of Moscow.[1] It connects Red Square and Lubyanka Square.[2] It was known as the Street of the 25th of October between 1935 and 1990. Никольская — одна из старейших улиц Москвы. Здесь находились Печатный двор, Николо-Греческий монастырь (Никола Старый), Славяно-греко-латинская академия, Военная коллегия Верховного суда СССР.

Wuyi tea, also known by the trade name Bohea in English, is a category of black and oolong teas grown in the Wuyi Mountains of northern Fujian, China. The Wuyi region produces a number of well-known teas, including Lapsang souchong and Da Hong Pao.[1][2] It has historically been one of the major centers of tea production in Fujian province and globally. Both black tea (excluding brick tea) and oolong tea were likely invented in the Wuyi region, which continues to produce both styles today. —- WikiPedia

Another oldie from long ago and my time working for the Alaska Railroad. This is what I wrote at the time when originally posted on RP:

The Denali Star consist rests inside the car shop on Shed 2. It may be a quiet Sunday, but in one week the ARR's busy passenger season begins and these cars will run nearly non stop for four months! The two bi levels are the pride of the ARR fleet. They are half of the railroads first class "Goldstar" fleet and offer panoramic wrap around windows, an upper level open observation platform, and elegant full service dining downstairs. They are products of Tom Rader's Colorado Railcar.

It's time for a new riddle!

Update!!!

Guess what it is! Everybody has only one unlimited attempts here on Flickr.

But If you are on facebook.com too, you have a second attempt there you could participate there too!

And in addition i give some hints!

1. It is a 'real' macro, taken with a 105mm macro lens and 3 extension tubes (total 65mm)! That means a magnification much higher than 1:1! It's the result of focus stacking of 10 shots!

2. It is food. But you see the 'surface' of the part which you don't eat.

3. It comes NOT from an animal and I ate the contents after photographing!

The winner has the choice of the topic/theme for my next upload! :-)

Pt. 2

It started snowing on the afternoon of the 8th and continued through the 9th of February, which brought the birds flocking to the feeders :)

I sowed this species in the summer of 2022.

2 of the plants are now flowering for the first time. The one in the photo is the most striking of the 2.

It blooms quite late in the growing season, but the flowers are quite large and dark in color.

Orion races through our sky and in so doing leaves traces of brilliant starlight that seems engraved into our minds if we start to watch the stars and to revel in their wondrous beauty. Orion features in the annual procession of the constellations that rise above the limits of our horizon and also fall below our view each Solar sojourn.

For any failings please do not blame the Helios-44 2 it needs an adjustment to be made and to be secured. This is a picture from a Helios 44 ƒ2 one of the much vaunted Soviet copies of the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm ƒ/2. The Soviet manufactured lenses are much sought after for wonderful bokeh both from factory standard output and also now with a growing multitude of modern fanciful adjustments many making dream like pictures. The necessary adjustment to reach precise Star Focus is possibly going to feature in later uploads.

Sorry for not being very much on Flickr lately. We are having heavy snowing at the moment, and keeping the courtyard and roads open take much of the day. It is very wet and heavy snow coming now. It has been 8 to 12 inches a day for many days, but it compress the drier snow we had so it don't add that much to how deep the snow is on the fields. 8 inches of fresh snow might add 2. It is also heavy to remove and it is starting to be little space left to dump it a couple of places I plow.

Camera: Contax IIa (1950s)

Lens: Zeiss-Opton Biogon 35mm f/2.8 (1950s)

Finder: Nikon 3.5cm

Weight of the setup: 787 g

Notes: almost 200 g heavier than my other film X100VI setup (Leica IIIa + LLL 35/2), it is not exactly a super lightweight. However, the setup still feels great in the hand and most importantly won't you agree it looks better than the X100VI? The Biogon uses the outer bayonet mount of the camera and I think it looks more elegant than any of the 50mm lenses that uses the inner bayonent.

Went on a night photography course last night, hoping to kick start myself back into it and also possibly to meet some like-minded people for future night shooting.

What the course taught me is that, for me personally, the key is to keep shooting…that's where most of my lessons in photography have been found so far (rather than blindly following the guru).

Also, in terms of shooting in central London at night: 1) There's almost too much light, and 2) It's really hard to make the familiar sights in any way interesting

Will have to get off the well-worn track to find interesting things to shoot in future

Why I look carefully at ants - part 2. It was small and dark and moved like an ant. Then I saw the antennae.

I really wish I could have caught this entire car but the damn snow is piled so high I could barely squeeze out single shots.

10 new ones today. Check out the Wisconsin car on Page 2 it rocks
