"As for everything else, so for a mathematical theory: beauty can be perceived but not explained" - Arthur Cayley

Barney was hoping I was about to pull a dog treat out from my coat pocket! I always mean to buy - & then switch over to using - a proper treat pouch thingy, to carry the dogs' snacks with me on walks but somehow I never do & as a result all my pockets seem to permanently have dog treats in them. My coats, light jackets, hoodies, jeans... Both collies perk up whenever my hand drifts near my pocket because they just assume I'm reaching for a tasty snack!
Barney did get a teeny tiny treat off me when I took this snapshot of him (who could say "no" to that face?!)... but sadly we're having to make some adjustments with his care at the moment & that means fewer snacks are being handed out. Around mid-month, I decided to take a urine sample up to the vet because... well, I just felt something was slightly "off" with Barney - nothing major had cropped up. Over the past year, whenever Barney's been "under the weather", it's been because he has a urinary tract infection, hence me deciding to get a urine sample. I honestly expected to be told it was clear, he was fine & I was fretting unnecessarily, or at worst, that yes, I should come pick up more antibiotics for a UTI.
It turned out Barney didn't have an infection but his urine was too dilute & there was blood & protein present. He had a blood test the following day & the vet rang the morning after & confirmed poor old Barney now has chronic kidney disease :( Given his age, it isn't surprising but at the same time... I wasn't expecting this news when I took the sample up 2 days earlier, so it's come as a shock. I do think we caught it reasonably early - the vet said his results weren't too bad. Barney's now been switched to a specialist renal diet... which is why I am now having to cut out biscuits & other snacks as much as possible. Apparently, the occasional special treat is OK but the food works best if it's pretty much the only thing they eat. Luckily, Barney does appear to love the new kibble! I'll have to start putting some of that in my pockets, I suppose. Anyway, we're taking Barney back for another check-up in a month, so fingers crossed he'll be doing alright then. Obviously, there's no cure for chronic kidney disease... but hopefully we can manage his condition & keep the old boy happy & comfortable for as long as possible

In our household our hearts are turning towards Christmas and the greatest story ever told. My younger sister is a talented singer/songwriter and on her latest album (a Christmas album - check it out on iTunes: apple.co/21GQ524) she shared a song she wrote by the name "Luke Chapter 2". I had that song in mind when I thought of the concept of this image. The Bible opened to Luke Chapter 2 and the story of the birth of Jesus with the lights of Christmas blazing in bokeh beyond. I tried a few different approaches, but settle on this SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 lens with a single Metz 64 AF-1 flash and a Lite Genius Super Scoop II defuser a ways behind the camera so that the light would be soft by the time it hit the bright white pages of the Bible. The end result is pretty cool, I think, and is almost straight out of camera.
Technical Information: Canon EOS 6D, SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4, Processed in Adobe Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC, and Alien Skin Exposure X (use code "dustinabbott" to get 10% off)

Half-Life 2, if you aren't familiar, is absolutely one of the best video games of all time. (Half-Life: Alyx is definitely one of the best games of 2020 as well.) So here's some characters in LEGO!

Headcrab zombie (and headcrab)
Side note: I did edit Eli Vance's hair since I was having a hard time picking a hair that really fit him. Plus his fig has glasses, and Eli does not wear glasses. Sigh. He's not perfect.
