This composite photo shows detail from the the 5" Roorkee Heliograph elsewhere in this album. It shows the top and bottom of the sighting arm, and, at top, the diagram from [1] from a few years later for the sighting arm of a 3" Roorkee heliograph. Careful comparison of the photograph and the diagram show differences in a few details, but they are clearly very close to being the same.

Desert Sun, Number 39, 1 May 1936 — BANNING-IDYLLWILD HOAD IMPROVEMENT IN PRESENT PLANS [ARTICLE]
BANNING-IDYLLWILD HOAD IMPROVEMENT IN PRESENT PLANS
The old Banning-Idyllwild road will probably be improved from Banning to Vista Grande, according to Supervisor R. E. Dillon. The county road crew has been working on the lower five miles for the past two weeks, to get the road in shape for aqueduct workers working on the Banning adit, w'hich is about five miles south of Banning. This part of the road will be kept in good condition in order to facilitate transportation to the adit. There being no dormitories at that point, the workmen must travel over the road twice daily. About May 15 a county paving crew will go to work on the road from the stale highway to Potrero shaft. The road branches from the state highway a short distance west of the Richfield Beacon. Two miles will be paved, connecting with the section previously paved by the Metropolitan Water district.
The New Jackrabbit Trail will be ready for traffic within a month. The late C. D. Hamilton, state highway commissioner, insisted recently on the extension of the present completed paved section, for about a mile on the west end to the Redlands-Moreno road. This work will be completed in about a month. In the meantime the county paving crew is paving the RedlandsMoreno road, a distance of about a mile and a half, connecting the new Jackrabbit Trail with the paved Moreno road. When these two links are completed. Jackrabbit Trail will be open to the public. Rapid progress Is being made on the new viaduct over the Southern Pacific tracks west of Beaumont. Before this viaduct is completed, the $90,000 contract will be under way to pave the new link on each end of the viaduct, making an easy curve on Highway 60, eliminating the narrow bridge and sharp turn.
