The last sliver of light at Vestrahorn. We almost didn't go as the sky was sooo bland, but it turned out much better than we had thought (or hoped for). If you've not been, it is a magical place and well worth the trip! 20221008 Vestrahorn 1v1

Now, I know that I am probably the only person who likes this photograph. It is a panorama near Vik at sunset at the edge of a road. The sun is setting to the right. I am standing on the edge or the road that you can see on the left - very steep. But I love the perspective and the "depth" of this photo. I hope you enjoy it too.

The New Holland honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae) is a honeyeater species found throughout southern Australia. It was among the first birds to be scientifically described in Australia, and was initially named Certhia novaehollandiae.

You know Kendo? The Japanese sport where you fight 1v1 with wooden swords? Those guys (and girls ofc) have very distinct helmets with a whole bunch of vertical slits covering the face.

When I look at the mouth parts of this European alder spittle bug (Aphrophora alni) - that's what I think of.

After the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, relations between the two would quickly sour. The Spanish would massacre hundreds at the grand temple in fear of a revolt against them. The Spanish would also hold the emperor Moctezuma II hostage where he would be eventually killed by his own people. They would then leave the city and seek refuge with the enemies of the Aztecs, the Tlaxcalans. The Tlaxcalans have been fighting a never ending war against the Aztecs for hundreds of years. During their flight to Tlaxcala, the Spanish would crush an Aztec army at Otumba.

Next the Conquistadores lead by Hernan Cortes would plan their next move. They and their native allies would besiege Tenochtitlan, which was under the leadership of Cuauhtémoc. Before they made their move, a smallpox epidemic ravaged the city and killed 40% of the population. Despite this the Aztecs outnumbered the coalition with 300,000 warriors and 400 war canoes to the coalitions 200,000 native warriors and 1,300 Spanish infantry. However the Spanish Conquistadors had better weapons and strategy. The Aztec way of fighting was to engage in 1v1 engagements with the purpose of capturing their opponents and sacrificing them. The Spanish didn't play by the same rules. They were playing chess while the Aztecs played checkers. The Spanish also had 16 cannons, 13 lake brigantines, and 100 cavalry.

The coalition was broken up into 3 groups who would build causeways to the island city and then invade. However, every time the coalition forces would build a causeway, the Aztecs would bog them down. One of the commanders, Pedro De Alvarado would try multiple times to break through but failed. Hernan Cortez would lead his group into the city multiple times but would be pushed out. Some of his men and native allies would be captured and sacrificed at the great pyramid. Their saving grace came when more reinforcements arrived and built the 3rd causeway they needed. All three groups made a final push in the ruins of the city and pushed the Aztecs to the marketplace area where the Aztecs would be defeated. Cuauhtémoc would try to flee but was captured and killed. The siege lasted for a total of 2 months. The Aztec empire would come to an end and this would be the beginning of modern Mexico.

I'm pretty pleased with how the sunset came out. I've always wanted to try a build with a sky in it of some sort. I also wanted to include the great pyramid of Tenochtitlan in the distance of the fighting. I also wanted to include the native allies with the Spanish as they made up 95% of the forces besieging Tenochtitlan, a fact that is forgotten by many.
