Annie Cohen Kopchovsky, aka Annie Londenderry
On June 25, 1894, Annie Cohen Kopchovsky, a young mother of three small children, stood before a crowd of 500 friends, family, suffragists, and curious onlookers at the Massachusetts State House. Claiming she would circle the world, and armed with a pearl-handled revolver, she climbed onto a 42-pound Columbia bicycle and “sailed away like a kite down Beacon Street.”
Fifteen months later The New York World called it “the most extraordinary journey ever undertaken by a woman.”
The trip was purportedly set in motion by a wager that required Annie not only to circle the earth by bicycle in 15 months, but to earn $5,000 en route, as well. A $10,000 prize, an enormous sum in the 1890s, awaited her if she succeeded. This was no mere test of a woman’s physical endurance and mental fortitude; it was a test of a woman’s ability to fend for herself in the world.

I am afraid that I am one of those Philistines who do not at all appreciate the attraction of knocking small balls into small holes with sticks ~
but even I can smile at this.
Cripple Creek is an old gold mining town that was built up at the end of the 19th Century. In recent years, the old buildings have been restored, especially along East Bennett Avenue. Many of the buildings have become casinos, so this is now a place for gamblers. But it's nice to see the restored buildings.
I like the way that these buildings are designed for the hill.

Built from 1859-61, The HMS Warrior was one of two armoured frigates (her sister ship was the HMS Black Prince) built in response to the French Napoléon, the first steam powered battleship in the world. She was the largest, most powerful and fastest ship of her day but soon became obsolete as maritime warfare equipment advanced. She is now docked in Portsmouth Harbour and has been restored as part of the National Maritime Fleet.

Her braided straw bonnet with what must have been colorful ribbon decorations is a contrast to the sadness written on her unusual face.

The cynical old saying (quoted by Shakespeare, no less) was "It's a wise child that knows its own father."
This child certainly knows something about the reliability and honesty of its own father.
Saint Nicholas the Wonder Worker is the Orthodox cathedral in Białystok, and the seat of the Bishop of the Białystok-Gdańsk in Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
The 40 metre high edifice was erected in 1843-46 as a parish church, following eastern Poland’s ‘partition’ into the Russian Empire, and both an anti-Uniate persecution campaign and migration from other areas due to the industrialisation of Białystok, which led to a rise in the Orthodox population in the city. It was built in a neo-classical style typical of Russian Orthodox architecture in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.
It became the cathedral of the Białystok-Gdańsk Orthodox Diocese in 1951. In June 1991, Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral as part of his official visit to his native Poland.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion. We have digitally enhanced some of his artworks. They are free to download under the CC0 license.

The second of a pair of French medical illustrations--the yellow fever victim has fallen into the "spitting up blood" stage. Not to be a ghoul, but I've thought him more handsome in this view than when he was healthy. Odd, isn't it?

"The Temple of Flora" is considered to be the greatest of all flower books. Illustrated here is the third and final part "New illustration of the sexual system of Carolus von Linnaeus" by the English physician and botanical writer Robert John Thornton (1768–1837). Thornton was destined to be a priest, but switched to medicine after finding inspiration in the botanical lectures and works by Thomas Martyn and Carl Linnaeus. The exotic plants in the aquatint and mezzotint prints are notable by their epic and unusual settings. We have digitally enhanced these beautiful flower plates, available for you to download under the creative commons 0 license.
