A full page colour advert in the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition Annual for 1953/54 for Crown Wallpapers showing three patterns and three appropriate matching rooms in which they could appear. The decor is, even for the 1950s, quite 'tame' and this I suspect is because the advert and products were aimed at a mass market - nothing too challenging even at a time of bolder 'Festival of Britain' design but when, after post-war austerity, many homes were beginning to be redecorated or refurbished alongside the rapidly growing supply of new houses.

The Wall Paper Manufacturers Ltd had been formed in 1899 as a 'co-operative' of 31 separate manufacturers and over the coming decades they grew to acquire many other wallpaper makers. By the early 1900s they had started, in their Darwen, Lancashire, mill to make paint and this was to grow to become Walpamur - this branch was formally incorporated as a company within the group in 1915. By 1966 Walpamur's products were being branded as Crown Paints and in subsequent years, following many changes of ownership, the company name is still in existance for wallcoverings and paint, based in Darwen and part of a larger international concern.

These asymmetric 'forced perspective' frames are so wacky. And they're huge!

I finally got to "permanently" install this beautiful fixture after having it for 20+ years! I know...it's not so sleek-contemporary-retro-modern......but i'm more inclined to the "kitsch"....the affordable, every-day mass-produced stuff of the 50's and 60's. That's the stuff that is really hard to find anymore, as people used it up and threw it out.

A cute pair of bookends from the 1940s or 1950s featuring two dancing elephants.

This mid century modern ceramic vase wrapped in leather was a fun find. There are no markings but it is very much in the style of Italian artist Marcello Fantoni.

By the late 1950s the construction and use of open grate fireplaces was well on the way out - cleaner fuels and heating systems becoming more common. However, this very period advert shows the charms of the '50s home.

These are nice as a stand alone "Atomic Age" Mid Century Modern 1950s table top sculpture as well as sacred geometry and as classroom geometry visual aids.

Technically, these are 2 tetrahedron made of wood interwoven together. Each of the 5 Platonic Solids has a 'dual' but the tetrahedron is the only one that is it's own 'self dual' so I stained one in a dark cherry wood then clear coated the whole piece in polyurethane semi gloss for a long durable finish.

Pictured are two great examples of the ornate and glitzy ceramic ashtrays from the 1950s.

Gosh, I don't know. It leaves me positively speechless.

This diner, with its 1950s decor, has been a landmark in the heart of Baldwinsville, NY since 1934. Now a little bit of history: The original diner was a diner car manufactured off-site and brought in and placed on this site. At the time this location was ideal because it was right across the street from Morris Pumps Manufacturing Plant later known as Gould Pumps. The location was unique because it was on the edge of the Baldwin Canal. The original Diner was named "Grady's Diner" and this diner car operated from 1934-1950. It was then purchased by the Younis Family and they renamed it "The Bville Diner". In 2003 Jim and Laura Orlando purchased the Bville Diner and they continue to own and operate this landmark located in the heart of the village. The diner is open 24 hours. Located at 16 East Genesee Street in Baldwinsville, NY. (S/B 334)

After removing about three layers of paint, and as many layers of wallpaper, this is what I found in my kitchen: the original paper they hung in 1955. Oh. Dear.
