On August 8th, 1931 the Rainier National Park company opened its nine hole golf course here in Paradise Valley. It featured four par 3s, four par 4s, and one par 5 and boasted spectacular views of Mount Rainier at every hole. (the first tee box was three hundred feet above it's landing area!) :) Alas, or fortunately, depending on your views, the shortsightedness of opening a golf course in the middle of nowhere during the great depression combined with the fact that it could only be played for three or four months a year before it looked like this image doomed the venture in just two months as when the snow fell in October 1931 it buried the course literally and figuratively.
I got the numbers and that quote from an article entitled 'the short, spectacular life of Paradise Golf Course, Mount Rainier written for a mag called NW Hickory Players. It's a short read, but the best part is a staged photo of a guy teeing off from a precipice I can only assume is somewhere atop one of the peaks of the Tatoosh Range, pretty amazing.

The Riley Nine was one of the most successful light sporting cars produced by the British motor industry in the inter-war period. It was made by the Riley company of Coventry, England, with a wide range of body styles between 1926 and 1938. The car was largely designed by two of the Riley brothers, Percy and Stanley. Stanley was responsible for the chassis, suspension and body and the older Percy designed the engine.
This 1931 Riley Nine, GO 1185, is seen at Prescott Speed Hill Climb on 17th April 2021.

The 1931 Buick's were equipped as straight eight overhead valve engines of 220.7 cubic inches with 77 horsepower, 272.6 cubic inches with 90 horsepower and a third straight eight of 344.8 cubic inches rated at 104 horsepower. 1931 Buick wheelbase included a 114, 118, 124 and 132 inch wheelbase for the series 50, 60, 80 and 90. Twenty eight different Buick models were produced in 1931. Production plunged to 88,000 units compared to over 100,000 units in the 1920s. This example is the model 94 (in the 90 series). The straight 8 was a new engine for Buick, they were using an overhead valve 6 cylinder in previous years. Photographed at the Vintage Car Club of Canada annual swap meet in Victoria BC Canada. I picture a car like this cruising around Hollywood back in the day with the 'star' of the day driving it.
imaged nestled among other colorful classic cars at a Concours. Wonderful calligraphy in the name plate. No mascot unfortunately. Wonderful low slung sports car. View details BIG
