Austerity 0-6-0ST 198 Royal Engineers has arrived at Whotton, Isle of Wight Steam Railway, 17th October 2019.

Locomotive History

During the Second World War, the War Department was persuaded by Hunslet that a simplified version of their more modern 50550 design would be the solution to its needs for a 0-6-0 shunting engine. The first was completed by Hunslet at the start of 1943 and assisted by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co., W. G. Bagnall, Hudswell Clarke, Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns and the Vulcan Foundry three hundred and seventy seven had been built for the War Department by 1947. Production continued for industrial use until 1964 by which time four hundred and eighty five locomotives had been built.

198 was built by the Hunslet Engine Co. in 1953 (Works No. 3798) for the Ministry of Defence but did not enter service until 1956 when it worked at the General Stores Sub-Depot at Steventon. It then moved to Central Ordnance Depot, Bicester in 1958 and finally to HQ Engineer Resources at Long Marston in 1961. Following a long period in store she was restored to working order and given the name Royal Engineer in 1971. A further overhaul followed in 1987/88 and when withdrawn from service in 1991 was the last operational steam locomotive owned by the Army. 198 was part of a collection of railway items acquired by the Royal Corps of Transport Museum Trust for eventual display at a new museum under development at Chatham. As an interim measure it was placed on loan to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and, following the fitting of Westinghouse air brake equipment, was put to work on passenger services. In May 2008 the National Army Museum transferred the ownership to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

An old shot of the Centre.

No motorised road traffic present although that could be because its a quiet day. The Church and the dockside are to be seen.

Horses and Gas Lamps punctuate the view. Note there are ships/boats right in the centre of Town.

So, I have a bit of a tradition of building cars, usually 1930's cars. This time, I decided to challenge myself with a different sort of car.

Since we are now in the centenary of the Great War, I thought of building something from that era, and no vehcile is better associated with the first months of the war as the Parisian taxi, namely, the model AG1, built by Renault wich took part in the famous battle of the Marne, earning it the nickname of "Taxi de la Marne".

Hope you like!

As usual, C&C is more than welcome!

Thomas Ward circa 1910.

Timing is everything they say. A “tip run” with a car load of rubbish to the local tip/recycling centre at Beeston was required so a quick check on the internet to see what was about I timed the run to enable a quick visit to Boots bridge, Beeston for two eastbound freights, the second being 60063 working 6E02, 12:46 Toton – Boston steel 30th October 2019.

Locomotive History

60063 was built at the Brush Falcon works, Loughborough in 1991 and was officially accepted by British Rail in June 1991, allocated to Cardiff Canton MPD for petroleum duties. It was first stored on the 29th November 2006 but reinstated a month later. Since then it has been in and out of store a further eight times until taken into Toton in October 2011 for a General overhaul. It emerged at the beginning of March 2012 and following a couple of test runs and a repaint into DB Schenker red was reinstated to traffic on the 8h March 2013.

“Ex works” following overall Great Western Railway Collet 4000 gallon tender (currently fitted to Great Western Railway Hall class 4-6-0 4953 Pitchford Hall) has been unloaded from a road trailer at Quorn, Great Central Railway and is about to be reunited with the engine, 3rd October 2019. The Great Western Railway built four hundred and eighty one Collet 4000 gallon tenders between 1926 and 1946. They were built for new King, Castle and Hall class locomotives. Swindon Works operated a “tender pool” policy during repair visits and locomotives regularly re-entered traffic with a different tender to what they had arrived with. Several of these tenders have survived and are in active use both on preserved lines and on the mainline behind King, Castles and Halls.

Well this had to be done, considering I had designed most of the 1910 League members for the crossover League.

Thomas Carnacki: Occultist detective

Allan Quartermain jr: The rejuvenated Quartermain, posing as his son.

Mina Murray: The Leader of the new League

Orlando: Immortal, gender changing warrior who wields the legendary sword Excalibur.

A.J. Raffles: Gentleman thief, working for the League due to being blackmailed about his burglary career.

On this day in 1910 around 300 women marched on the Houses of Parliament as part of their campaign to secure voting rights for women. The day would become known as Black Friday due to the violence meted out to protesters, some of it sexual, by the Metropolitan Police and male bystanders.

The deaths of two suffragettes have been attributed to the treatment they received that day. Mary Clarke, Emmeline Pankhurst's younger sister, died of a brain haemorrhage in December following her release from prison, while Henria Leech Williams died of a heart attack in January, having been beaten “for a considerable time”.

Probably worth pointing out that the Met are still massive dangers. www.newstatesman.com/quickfire/2022/09/the-metropolitan-p...

Standing in one of the bay platforms at Huddersfield is Northern 153360 waiting departure time working 2O76, 14:03 Huddersfield – Castleford, 31st October 2019.

Unit History

153360 was originally part of a two car class 155 unit (155310) built in 1988 and allocated to Cardiff Canton for local services in Wales and the South West and longer distance services to Birmingham and Manchester. In 1992 it was decided to convert most of the class 155 fleet into single car units by the addition of an additional cab and they were rebuilt by Hunslet – Barclay at Kilmarnock with 155310 becoming 153310 and 153360.

153360 arrived at Sims Metals, Newport for Breaking up on the 8th January 2024.

Photographed on May 20, 2016 at Hastings, Michigan during the lunch stop for the Donald Gilmore Classic Driving Tour. This was the first year for the event, which is sponsored by the Gilmore Car Museum.
