Ecce Homo: Comment on devient ce que l'on est - Friedrich Nietzsche

This 1906 vehicle, registration SMC 1, is the oldest surviving Standard car. In 1950, it was discovered in a barn in Australia. It was restored and returned to Britain in 1959. It is now on display in the Coventry Transport Museum.

Described by auto experts as “the Mona Lisa of American historic automobiles,” it became the first U.S.-built car to win an international auto race when it captured the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup. The Locomobile was aptly named as it was built as strong as any locomotive. It was built for nearly 30 years in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It had a reputation as one of the finest and most carefully built cars ever manufactured in the United States. It was also one of the most luxurious and most prestigious — and the most expensive. Everything about the Locomobile bespoke elegance. Its massive body gleamed with innumerable layers of paint, each hand-rubbed to a gleaming finish.

Charles Fondu built railway equipment in the Belgian city of Vilvorde (historically known as Filford in English, and launched into car production in 1906. This is one of the first models (chassis No.4).

The bodywork is made of pitch pine, by Victor Decunsel based in Molenbeek. A luxurious finish with chased glass and ivory accessories.

Fondu granted a production licence to Russo-Baltique, a company based in Riga, Latvia, at that time a member of the Russian Empire.

This 1906 Fondu CF has a 4,850 cc 30 hp engine and is on display at Autoworld, Belgium’s national motor museum, in Brussels.

#4554 - 2020 Day 171: I picked up this beautiful whelk shell on a beach in Cumbria, and carried it all the way back to Sussex in my pack on my Coast walk in 2017. This evening it was illuminated by the last light.

Stanier 8F 48624 drifts into Quorn station with a service to Leicester North, 27th June 2019.

Locomotive History

The Stanier 8F 2-8-0 heavy freight engine was introduced by the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1935 and over the next two years ninety five locomotives were built. At the start of the Second World War in 1939 the design was chosen as the standard freight engine for universal production and between 1940 and 1946 a further seven hundred a fifty seven locomotives were built being allocated to the War Department for both UK and overseas service, the London Midland and Scottish Railway and the London and North Eastern Railway. Twenty three locomotives were lost at sea due to enemy action and eventually six hundred and sixty six locomotives became British Railways stock. 48624 is a Southern Railway built example, being part of a Railway Executive Committee order completed in 1943 at Ashford Works. The locomotive spent its entire working life allocated to Willesden MPD until withdrawn from traffic in July 1965 with a suspected fractured internal main steam pipe. Following withdrawal it was sold to Woodham Brothers and spent the next sixteen years slowly rusting at Barry, South Wales, before being sold for preservation in 1981. The locomotive returned to traffic in May 2009.

The Story: The Canton Railroad at work. The decision to travel to the Charm City to see Canton Railroads newest switcher was well worth it, it was a long, yet productive day on an interesting little railroad.

Found image. This card, written in 1908, reads:

Dear Elie,

This is a photograph of our chapel decoration at our Harvest Thanksgiving service two years ago. I don't know whether you have a copy, but if not, you will no doubt be pleased to have this put in your album....

Hope you are quite well. Should love to come down to Molesey on Sunday, but suppose must consider that a past luxury or pleasure.

Kindest regards to Miss Waterman & yourself.

Yours sincerely
