Diesel locomotive 1905 returning to Entroncamento with a batch of empty rail transport wagons, after another overnight operation at Beira Alta line, which is now closed for renovation works and its reopening date is now uncertain. Some say that this is the last 1900 with orange colors, but calling this "orange" is a rather dubious thing to say.

Harkening back to a time when waves of armor yellow painted SD40-2s were standardizing road power on Union Pacific's portion of the Overland Route, a trio of North Little Rock 'rebuilds' burst out of Hermosa Tunnel with the newly introduced 'Laramie Hauler'. Still a match for the task the trio of EMD workhorses still look right at home against the snow dusted granite faces of Wyoming's Sherman Hill.

AUF DER SUCHE NACH MÖGLICHKEITEN,
MÖGLICHES FESTZUHALTEN (Heinz Gasper 1980)
Als gebürtiger Düsseldorfer hat es mich schon sehr früh in die Ferne gezogen. Frankfurt, München, Wien, Graz und seit 1999 wohnhaft in Jennersdorf, im wunderschönen Südburgenland.
Im ausgeübten Beruf als Werbegestalter und Grafiker (1966-1992) aber auch in der Selbständigkeit (bis 2012) ist die bildende Kunst immer allgegenwärtig gewesen.
Meine Leidenschaft sind Experimente mit verschiedenen Hilfsmitteln und Materialien wie zum Beispiel:
Kurzfilme mit und ohne Kamera - Kodak-Sofortbilder ganz ohne Kamera - Negativstreifen und Dias anders gesehen - PC-Fehler zur kreativen Weiterverarbeitung verwenden - Digitalfotografie und ihre Möglichkeiten mit einem Apple-Computer kombinieren und verfeinern - und bis heute noch vieles mehr entdecken...
1905 Pope-Toledo Type IV 3.8, 24HP. This Roi-des-Belges ("King of Belgium") or tulip phaeton was a car body style used on luxury motor vehicles in the early 1900s and very popular among the wealthy. It was a double phaeton with exaggerated bulges "suggestive of a tulip". The rear bulges accommodated two corner seats like tub armchairs which sometimes were accessed from the rear by a central door with a small fold-down seat. The Roi-des-Belges style began with a 1901 40 hp Panhard et Levassor with a Rothschild body commissioned by Leopold II of Belgium. The style lasted through the decade.
Albert Augustus Pope (May 20, 1843 – August 10, 1909), at the age of nineteen, joined the Union Army attached to the 35th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. The unit crossed the Potomac River on September 7, and just ten days later, fought at Antietam. Pope survived a bout with cholera, and his unit served at the Battles of Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, and Knoxville. He mustered out as a Captain, though he received the honorary title of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel for distinguished service.
A flamboyant and generally successful businessman, who started with bicycles, then motorcycles and eventually produced Automobiles.
Between the years 1903 and 1915, the company operated a number of automobile companies including Pope-Hartford (1903–1914), Pope-Robinson, Pope-Toledo (1903–1909), Pope-Tribune (1904–1907) and Pope-Waverly. Kind of an early General Motors. The Pope-Toledo was the most expensive of the group.

Este Darracq único de 1905 parece ser el primer automóvil construido desde cero que contiene un V8 de 25,422 cc que produce 200 hp en un automóvil que pesa solo 900 kg (1982 lb).

The Atlantis barkentine was built on a shipyard in Hamburg in 1905 as a lightship – a beacon in the mouth of the Elbe. In a place where the construction of a lighthouse is not possible. After 70 years of service she got a second life as a sailing ship. The underwater ship of the Atlantis has a classic sailing ship line. A reason to thoroughly restore the ship in 1984 and to provide it with the rigging of a barkentine.
This means that the front mast of the sailing ship is rigged and the remaining masts are moored alongside. (www.sail.nl/)
SAIL Amsterdam is a maritime event held once every five years in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Tall ships from all over the world visit the city to moor in its eastern harbour. SAIL Amsterdam 2025 is the tenth edition, and the first one since 2015 as the 2020 event was cancelled. It was one of the main events celebrating Amsterdam's 750th birthday. It was also 50 years since the first SAIL Amsterdam was held.

On one of its first runs, Union Pacific's then new Laramie turn-around local (nicknamed the Laramie Laser by its crew) digs into the grade as it climbs the Harriman Line at Speer, WY led by a trio of North Little Rock rebuilds. Unfortunately, like the laser itself, the solid sets of SD40s were short lived. Speer is also the Junction with the mainline to Denver with the west leg of the Greeley Sub connector in the foreground. In the distance Local 60 can be seen on the east leg, awaiting its turn in Cheyenne.
Recently the old steam era water tank here was razed after many decades of quietly observing the passage of trains at this busy location.

56 miles from the eastern edge of Death Valley is what little remains of the town of Rhyolite, Nevada. It was one of the many gold rush locations in the California/Nevada area. This one took place around 1905 and suddenly people from literally all over the world rushed to this remote desert location and a town of more than 10,000 people very quickly sprang up. It stayed that way until the gold petered out and just as quickly (around 1911) it dwindled down to a handfull of people and became, like many others, a "Ghost Town".

"USS Hartford, a sloop-of-war, steamer, was the first ship of the United States Navy named for Hartford, the capital of Connecticut. Hartford served in several prominent campaigns in the American Civil War as the flagship of David G. Farragut, most notably the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. She survived until 1956, when she sank awaiting restoration at Norfolk, Virginia."

Medway's 1905 poseert in het station van Ourique met haar trein 55984 van Minas Neves Corvo naar Praias-Sado.
Deze foto vanuit het Iberisch breedspoor (1.668 mm) mocht ik maken met de vriendelijke toestemming van het stations- en treinpersoneel. Zij namen een goede drie kwartier pauze om vervolgens strak volgens dienstregeling om 19.12 te vertrekken richting de haven van Praias-Sado.
Ourique ligt aan de Linha do Alentejo en de sporen zijn vanaf de driehoek bij Funcheira geëlektrificeerd tot in Ourique. Momenteel zijn er geen normale, commerciële ritten met elektrisch materieel naar Ourique. Sowieso wordt het station momenteel enkel aangedaan door de zand/koper treinen naar/van Minas Neves Corvo welke diensten in vaste handen zijn van de fraaie 1900-en. Andere diensten zijn er nu niet op dit deel van de Linha do Alentejo.

Het zonnetje van de vorige foto piepte precies op tijd tussen de wolken door voor een laatste zonnige foto van Medway's 1905.
Keurig op tijd is ze uit Ourique vertrokken voor het laatste deel van haar reis met de met koper beladen trein 55984 van Minas Neves Corvo naar Praias-Sado.
Decor voor deze laatste foto is het spookstationnetje van Panoias. Sinds op dit deel van de Linha do Alentejo het reizigersverkeer is stilgelegd valt er op het station niks meer te beleven...
Na deze foto werd het voor mij tijd om de precies 100 kilometer terug te rijden naar ons verblijf aan de kust van de Algarve. Met deze foto sluit ik ook de korte serie uit Portugal af: het was een korte, maar fijne vakantie in dat heerlijke land!

I suppose 1905 is about right. This original photo of my great-Aunt Mamie was sent to me today by a relative in Charleston. I did a very nice restoration of this stunning photo, if I may say so myself.
My sister Ruthie left Maggie and me Mamie's antique mahogany bed, and we've converted our rear living room into a guest bedroom with Mamie's bed as its centerpiece. Mamie had exquisite taste; I'll take a photo of it later and post it here.
