Scientific name: Ardea cinerea
Herons are often seen standing as still as a statue on their long thin legs in shallow waters of ponds and lakes patiently waiting for their next meal to swim by. These tall birds spend most of their time alone feeding mainly on fish but can be tempted by the occasional tasty mole! When feeling particularly lazy the heron will visit gardens with ponds for a quick and easy snack. Make sure you look out for these incredible birds in flight, their slow-flapping wings and long legs held out behind make them hard to miss!

Bi colour image made up from a blend of Hydrogen Alpha and Oxygen III filters. There isn't as much exposure time in the OIII filter as I wanted, but it looks like the bad weather is taking it's grip for the foreseeable future.
8.25 hours exposure using Astrodome Ha & OIII 3nm filters, an Altair Astro 6"RC and Atik 460ex camera. Processed in Pixinsight and Adobe CS5.
A smallish but stunning emission nebula, IC 1871 is located within the more well known Soul Nebula (IC 1848). Rolling clouds of ionized hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur and dust have created the spectacular features that define this nebula. The small, very dark, feature near the top of this image is a Bok globule.

"The Lighthouse was located a mile off Colchester Point in Lake Champlain, marking the location of three reefs. The building was designed in 1869 by Andrew Dow, a Burlington, Vermont, Resident, who submitted his plan in a contest organized by the United States Lighthouse Service. A series of eleven keepers and their families lived and worked in the lighthouse until 1933, when the beacon light was automated, eliminating the need for resident keepers."

I imaged this nebula a few years ago but decided to try it again with a different telescope. I also used different techniques during post processing which, I think, resulted in a better image.
This image was done using a modified Hubble palette.
