The Zandhoek was a quay in the Westerdok in Amsterdam.
In the background the bows of sea ships, moored at the shipyards in the dock. In the foreground moored from left to right: a small tjalk, a vlieger and a vlet.
The photographer Jacob Olie lived at the Zandhoek and his early photo's are all taken in the vicinity of his house, because he used the wet-plate technique for his pictures. After the exposure of the glass negative he had very limited time to develop his photo, which he did at his home.
