Katelyn Clark will present tetra. tetra is an experimental performance of music for medieval organetto with modified Pythagorean temperament. This temperament, or tuning system, is based on a very early method of dividing a tetrachord that allows "beats" to be heard between notes. The listener experiences a series of natural beating waves during the performance, as the ear is gently stretched beyond the boundaries of modern equal tuning, and pulled into the rhythm of pitch.

Philosophy has asked about the linkage between the structure of consciousness and the structure of now, yet it has left sound out of this question. How does sound contribute to this linkage? Consider for example the repetitive temporal structures present in techno musics, or the prolonged tones of Tibetan music ñ some rather primary relationships between time, consciousness and sound could be imagined. Informed by recent studies in the psychopathology of time, Fell's intense and confrontational installation Factoid 3 promotes a destabilized association between time, the self and sound. Here phenomenological emphases on flow, linearity, and the present as embedded in both the previous and the imminent are rejected in favour of disassociated supra sequential nows. This work contains extremely bright flashing light, high intensity sound and generative temporal structures. You are asked not to enter the space if you suffer from photosensitive epilepsy.

Thomas Brinkmann is a conceptualist. An innovator of minimal techno, this German artist has pioneered aesthetics and techniques that have impacted the electronic music world in countless ways. For this performance, Brinkmann will reinstate his iconic set-up from 1999. Using four turntables and armed with a razor-sharp tool, he cuts into the vinyl, building live rhythms ranging from simple clicks to complex, shifting textures. Brinkmann's technique is raw and immediate, yet austere and precise, creating an exciting, hypnotic tapestry of sound.

German musician/percussionist Limpe Fuchs closing out the 17th edition of Send & Receive. With a career spanning over forty years, this marked her second time ever performing in Canada.

Since the mid-1960's, Fuchs has developed a unique array of percussion instruments and a distinct otherworldly approach to composition based on open form intuitive improvisations. Her approach is organic, emotional and deeply connected to her environment.

Beginning her musical life with classical training, she quickly broke away into non-formalism, expanding her approach to performance and to the instruments with which she performed on.

If you catch sight of a friend in the distance go towards them calling out loudly. Let the calls ring out. Answer their calls. Desirable developments: from simple to very complex calls. This can be performed in public libraries, lecture halls, churches, central stations, civil service depts, or under the immense blue sky.

Bengt Af Klintberg is a Swedish artist and ethnologist who has been actively involved with the fluxus art movement since the 1960's. This piece is a piece from his Calls (Canto 1 - 6) series created between Dec. 1965 and June 1966. This historic fluxus piece will be performed by local artists.

Seijiro Murayama is a percussionist who began his path in the field of heavy psychedelic Japanese rock before moving into the realm of free improv and free jazz. From here he pursued dance and theatre, bringing unique insights to his practice. His work expands beyond his tools to incorporate the space he inhabits and his own body, but further to this is an exploration of the philosophies of performance and the critical relationship between audience and performer. His performances are captivating, sensual, intuitive and thought provoking.

Rosa Reaper is a Winnipeg based vocal artist whose performances consist of irregular vocal intonations looped and amplified to generate an atmosphere that is both absorbing and unnerving. There is a dreamlike quality to her work, which is enhanced by her presentation: a disembodied voice casting an unearthly and mesmerizing web over the audience.

Ian Murray | Keeping On Top of the Top Song (1973) | video | B&W | 17 min

Keeping On Top Of The Top Song was originally mounted as a performance in 1970 and later reproduced as a videotape. A drummer hired from the Musician's Union was asked to accompany without rehearsal a pre-recorded audio tape. The tape is a recording of the first ten seconds of the top ten songs of the previous ten years and the performer is instructed to play continuously along with the music, always searching for a point of reference which will allow him to play without changing his rhythm.

Second Star is a sound performance for moving image mechanics created and performed by Scott Fitzpatrick. Black and white text is laser-printed onto clear 16mm film, assembled into loops and translated into rhythm and tone by an analog projector. Photographic tradition is eschewed in favour of something invested neither in abstraction or representation, reimagining the potential for an obsolete technology.
