After 152 years the military in town marched out this afternoon. The parade went down the main street and on to the train in much the same way they would have when they went off to war. This was the military's official farewell. The fort has been occupied by the army since 1860.
What a wonderful day. We attended the 10th Annual Soggy Bottom Syrup Festival -- sponsored by terrific members of Tal's family, Beth and Ralph Pearson. Here, with a lot of help, the sugar cane is being pressed into liquid, a first step in the day-long process. The "soggy bottom" is part of the flood plain along the Broad River near Chapin SC.
