As it turns out, although we've been lighting fireworks for the last 2000 years or so, modern fireworks were only invented in the 1830s -- so, On America's first Fourth of July celebration in 1777, fireworks were one color: orange.
The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades, and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues The Fourth of July 2023 is on Tuesday, July 4.

In early January 1977 we find Grand Trunk Western GP38AC 1776 rolling train #450 by the depot and Holly Subdivision 13.0 signal in my hometown of Royal Oak, Michigan.
During my 1975 Spring Break trip to Fla, I stopped in at Sanford to look at the Auto Train facilities and as I was leaving, SCL was nice enough to run this southbound freight with their bicentennial unit heading it up. SCL is credited with having the first bicentennial however, this one wasn't the original #1776. By the time they decided to have GE paint up one of their 108 U36B's in a red white and blue scheme, they already had a black #1776. Some number swapping fixed that and #1776 became quite famous. The original #1776 is preserved but the one that ran around in RWB was scrapped. Sanford was the dividing point between the Sanford and Lakeland subdivisions of the Tampa division, 766 miles from Richmond.

I stumbled upon an Italian Moto Gathering on the streets of Little Napoli Ristorante, Carmel when I saw this Moto Guzzi Springer. Lots of Ferraris’ but my heart belongs to the two-wheeled exhibits of Isle of Man.

On her first trip we find the sparkling Lake States Railway 250th Anniversary unit 1776 passing thru the swamp lands south of Bay City, Michigan leading the Y126 job on October 15, 2025.
Sparkling fresh from the GTW Battle Creek shops is GP38AC 5808, now the spiffy 1776 at Milwaukee Junction, Detroit the evening of November 28, 1976.
Prompt: Create an ultra-realistic digital fine art painting of Boston Harbor in 1776, wide-angle horizontal composition. The scene features tall wooden sailing ships of the Revolutionary era, their masts and rigging rising dramatically into a pale, misty sky. The central ship in the foreground is a large three-masted frigate, with intricate rigging, furled sails, and weathered wooden hull details visible. To the right, additional warships and merchant vessels are anchored in the harbor, their stern galleries ornate with carvings, reflecting softly on the calm water. On the left side, the historic Boston waterfront is depicted with colonial-era stone buildings, warehouses, and bustling wooden docks. Market stalls and smaller boats line the wharf, adding period-accurate authenticity. The atmosphere is hazy and muted, with the soft golden beige of early morning light blending into cool blue-gray mist, creating depth and a sense of history. The water reflects the tall ships with gentle ripples, emphasizing realism and texture. The overall mood is historic, maritime, and atmospheric, evoking the tense yet majestic aura of Boston Harbor during the American Revolution. no noise, no grain

Inspired by the thuglug crew. Was starting to unpack some parts I bought at brickfair and came up with this small vignette.
scanned Kodachrome slide taken by John Benson. Yankeetown Dock Corporation SD38-2's # 1776 and # 1976 at Yankeetown, IN July 13th 1976.
Today nearly 40 years later this pair works for Respondek Railroad Squaw Creek Southern dumping coal trains at this very same spotted the scene looks much the same. From my slide collection
Newly rebuilt and repainted WE 1776 leads the southbound road freight 262 along Wingfoot Lake on their way towards Canton and Brewster.
GTW train #450 has a good roll eastbound approaching Pontiac, Michigan here at Waterford on December 12, 1976. The GTW bi-centenial 1776 is leading the way with auto-racks full of new Cadillacs this day.
Location: Hoboken, New Jersey
Date: 1977.03
The Story: Fourth of July coincidence. Grabbed a handful of slides to scan from my personal collection, and low and behold, this one appears. Somewhat fitting for the day.
