Freehold Township 9/11 Memorial
The Freehold Township 9/11 Memorial consists of a pentagon-shaped monument enshrining pieces of the World Trade Center at its base. The marker with its encased fragments - which cannont be seen from the outside - symbolizes the final resting place of those who will never be recovered. A granite circle of 50 gold stars, one for each of the states, rests atop the monument and represents Ground Zero. Two miniatures of the Twin Towers carved in black granite are positioned atop the 50 gold stars. The five sides of the monument are inlaid with gold engravings that read: September 11, 2001, United Flight 93, United Flight 175, American Flight 11, and American Flight 77.
The memorial is dedicated with the words:
"It is with sadness that we see the need for a
lasting memorial to our fallen countrymen.
It is with pride that we see a finished product
worthy of those lost.
It is gratitude we give our community for the outpouring
of support and commitment to this project.
It is unity that we, the Freehold Township community,
show to the country and the world.
It is deep understanding of the cost of American
freedom and our way of life that we recognize.
To those taken from us at the hands
of our enemies on September 11, 2001:
The thousands of innocent civilians,
The hundreds of heroic rescue personnel
from all branches of public service,
the servicemen and women,
and the countless heroes...
Americans heal, not by forgetting, but by remembering.
It is with this in mind that we dedicate this Memorial. "
