Here is a classic example of an early British manufacturer which failed to modernise… Like many other car manufacturers the Star Motor Company of Wolverhampton began by building bicycles in the late 1880s. They manufactured their first car in 1898 and, by the outbreak of World War I, they were one of the six biggest manufacturers in the country.
Star were a respected company that built well-engineered, reliable cars with a high standard of finish. The Scorpio is a typical example of this, having a four-cylinder side-valve engine of 1745cc and an RAC rating of 12hp. It was also available as a four-door four-seater called the Orion.
Unable to compete with much cheaper equivalent mass-produced cars, the company closed in March 1932 having built a total of 15,600 cars.
