Thank you to everyone that sent messages to me. <3 I’m not sure how much I can be around here in the next while... I am missing your good/sweet/fun energy and photos though! Please be gentle with yourselves and take good care. I’m thinking of you, and wishing you only the best. xo

Trichogamma evanescens (wasp) have - if at all - extremely thin wings. Thus in coaxial light they show up a wonderful blue due to thin film interference. The wings have (almost) homogenously a thickness of about 0.2 Microns - which is less than half of the the wavelength of blue light. (In fact, the thinnest insect wings I ever measured).

Reflection spectrum is shown here

The wasp Trichogramma evanescense lays its eggs into the EGGS of moths (here: Sitototroga cerealella). The complete developement from the egg to the adult takes place inside this egg. Since moth eggs are quite small (ca. 0.4 mm in this case), adult trichogramma wasps belong to the smallest insects in the world (max. 0.5 mm). With only 10000 neurons, it has the smallest brain of any insect, yet this is enough to survive.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 165A at Naperville, Illinois on August 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 165A is seen switching Kroeher Manufacturing Company in Naperville on this photo date. Usually this chore was handled by the East End Way Freight. I'm not sure why a road feight got the job on this date. I would speculate that either there was not enough work for the way freight to call a crew, or there were not enough crew men available to operate the way freight (this was in the era of five crew men per train). Whatever the case, this was highly unusual.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 165A at Naperville, Illinois on August 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1950 (c/n 9694) on EMD Order 3021A, it was traded to EMD for SD45's in February 1969. It is seen here off the main line after setting out cars at Kroehler Mfg. Co., the plant in the background. Normally this would be handled by a single locomotive assigned to the daily East End Way Freight, but for some reason the way freight did not run on this date, and road power did the switching.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 165A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Seen here with the sanders on, 165A was leaving Naperville after performing switching duties normally done by the East End Way Freight, which apparently had been annulled this day for reasons I do not know. I witnessed this three locomotive set switch Kroehler Mfg. Co. (the building in the background), normally switched by a NW2 or a GP7. They were quick to leave town as they were occupying Track 1, the westbound main, and they needed to vacate that track. Locomotive (known as a motor on the CB&Q) number 165A was built in May 1950 (c/n 9694) and traded in on an order for SD45's in February 1969.

If the train had a number, it was never used on the dispatcher's line. It could run 80 cars long. Yes it was a heck of a train to be doing local switching, but it did weekdays. This day the power was CB&Q F7A 165A, F3B 165B, and F3A 165C, i.e., half of an ABBA F3 set with an F7A added.

These photos were taken while I was the agent substituting for the vacationing regular agent at Milledgeville on the CB&Q in August of 1964. See Photo 1 for details.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F7 165A at Naperville, Illinois on August 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This road freight is substituting for the East End Way Freight, setting out a boxcar at Kroehler Manufacturing Company. This locomotive was built in May 1950 (c/n 9694) on EMD Order 3021A for four F7A units. These four F7's were mated with a F3A-B pair, producing a single three unit drawbar-connected locomotive 165. During the mid-1960's the drawbars were replaced with couplers and the suffix letter was added to the numberboards and painted on the nose.
