Vanaf maart 1982 werd begonnen met de inzet van DH 1 en DH 2 stellen op de lijn Groningen-Leeuwarden. Deze treinstellen werden ingezet in de teinserie 8600. De treinstellen plan U, de DE-I motorwagens en DE-II treinstellen werden vervolgens in andere delen van land ingezet. Als gevolg van onder andere adhesieproblemen in de herfst van 1982 met de DH 1 en DH 2 stellen, werd het oudere materieel tijdens de winterdienstregeling 1982/1983 weer ingezet op de lijn Groningen-Leeuwarden.
Gedurende de periode dat de winterdienstregeling van kracht was, werd het in februari van 1983 nog een aantal weken winter waarbij het landschap met sneeuw was bedekt. Deze weken werden benut om het oude materieel in winterse omstandigheden op te foto te kunnen zetten op de lijn Groningen-Leeuwarden. Tijdens een lichte sneeuwbui rijdt treinstel 165 van NS het station van Visvliet binnen voor een stop. De locatie waar deze foto is gemaakt is na veertig jaar nogal gewijzigd. Eindbestemming van deze trein was Groningen.
