Model of the entrance to the residence of the daimyo Matsudaira Tadamasa - this is how it would looked like around 1650. A daimyo (大名) was a powerful feudal lord in old Japan (from the 10th century to the end of the shogunate in the 19th century and the prefecture system was applied to the country) - he would answer only to the shogun. Matsudaira Tadamasa (松平 忠昌 - lived 1598 to 16459) was the lord of the Fukui han (Fukui domain - 福井藩) which was located in todays Fukui Prefecture on Honshu. His paternal grandfather was Tokugawa Ieyasu. Tadamasa was a second son, but he became clan leader after his older brother Matsudaira Tadanao was banished.
This residence, the Kamiyashiki (上屋敷 - the main residence of a lord, situated in Edo, Edo is the old name for Tokyo, and not the provinces) was just outside the Ōtemon gate of Edo Castle. It was originally constructed in the Momoyama-style. This gate was one of the two main ones (there being additional ones for servants - but of course much less grand), and this one was reserved for important visitors. The residence burnt down in the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657 (a fire that destroyed more than half of Edo and cost some 100 000 lives. It is also referred to as the Furisode Fire (Furisode is a type of kimono) because according to legend it started when a priest tried to destroy a cursed garment).
This 1:30 scale model of the residence is in the Edo-Tokyo Museum, and is based on sources from the time before the great fire.

Olympian 16459 on service 10 in Gloucester Ave. Northampton. Almost certainly the last time a Stagecoach Midlands Olympian will be seen on a regular service...Aug 26 2016.
I finally photoed the rare working! Stagecoach Volvo Olympian P159KAK 16459 is seen leaving Northampton Bus Station making a very rare appearance on the X4 from Milton Keynes to Peterborough, a rare working I have tried for the last 2-3 years to catch, with no luck whatsoever! 27th July

[P159KAK] 159
Volvo Olympian / Alexander RL LWB 10.3m
New to Stagecoach Chesterfield in 1996 as their 159, later re-numbered 16459 when the national fleetnumbering system came into use.
159 is seen making the turn into the college having completed E09 to Bar Hill and back via Lolworth. She is (nearly) all painted...thanks to Scott, Stu & I, she should be all done by the end of the summer!

From left to right:
R313 WVR [R313WVR]
Volvo Olympian / Northern Counties Palatine II
New to Arriva Merseyside in 1997 as 313, she now resides with Cambridge Buses of Swavesey and is seen here parked up over the weekend awaiting her Monday school duties, usually the longer run to Papworth and back. With the route she usually takes, 313 often does 40-50miles a day which is not bad going for an Olympian. A good 5 miles of this is usually along the A14 which gives her a good chance to stretch her legs.
P159 KAK [P159KAK]
Volvo Olympian / Alexander RL 10.3m LWB
New to Stagecoach Chesterfield in 1996 as 159, later renumbered to 16459 when Stagecoach introduced the National Fleetnumbering system. 159's dedicated route at the minute appears to be the "E09" running between the college at Swavesey and Bar Hill via the A14, a round trip of about 12 miles. Twice a day, she gets a good run along the A14 and back four times a day, probably averaging a little less than 313 at about 30 miles a day. It will be nice to see what she looks like once she's all painted up in company colours!
R839 OVN [R839OVN]
Volvo Olympian / Alexander RL 10.3m LWB
New to Stagecoach Teesside (I think) as 839, later re-numbered 16839.
Here, 839's displays show that she had a brief stint on the "W05" service running to Papworth. Usually covered by Olympian 154 (P154KWJ), I have not seen 839 on it since her arrival at the company in 2015! 154 was away at the yard for a few days earlier in the week so one can only assume 839 was put on the route as it's again one of the longer routes that runs to Papworth. 839 can usually be found on E12 running between the college and Longstanton (Black Bull Pub & Mitchcroft Road), but P4 GHA covered this while 839 was out on W05. A big changearound to what it would usually be but I like it none-the-less. 154 has since returned from the yard and is back on W05, allowing 839 to return to her usual E12 route.
P279 VPN [P279VPN]
Volvo Olympian / Alexander RL 10.3m LWB
New to Stagecoach South as 279 in 1997, later re-numbered as 16279.
279's "new" displays at the front look great! It's nice to think one day they will all have displays in...Her current regular route at the moment is the "W04" service which runs to Papworth, so she puts in some serious miles, too.
R148 VPU [R148VPU]
Volvo Olympian / Alexander RL 10.3m LWB
New to Stagecoach London as 148 in 1997 (as dual door config).
148 is one of the many "spares" used to cover services when other vehicles are away. She has seen daily use for the past few weeks on the "E10" service running between Bar Hill and the college. She's had stints on E09, E11 and E12 but I've yet to see her venture to Papworth on one of the W services! P4 GHA was the dedicated bus for E10, but after she disappeared to the yard for a month 148 took the spotlight and ran the service and has done so flawlessly! Upon P4's return, she's been on E12 and E09 but has yet to return to E10, much to Harrisons disappointment!
HIG 4462 [HIG4462] previously P927 MKL [P927MKL]
Volvo Olympian / Northern Counties Palatine I (low height)
New to Maidstone & District as 5927 in 1997.
Re-plated recently to HIG 4462, 927 puts in some serious mileage too! Of recent, she's had a long run on the W06 running to Hilton via Fen Drayton & Conington. In January she spent much of her time on W01 to Fenstanton before heading to Impington Village College to work a school run to Girton, then back to Swavesey just in time to work the "LB1" duties to Bar Hill via Over, Willingham and Longstanton. This journey alone is about 45miles of non-stop driving. On top of her morning school run, she probably saw 60miles a day for most of January.
P721 GND [P721GND]
Volvo Olympian / Alexander RL 10.3m LWB
New to Stagecoach Manchester (Magic Bus) as 721 in 1996.
721 is another one of the many spare vehicles used to cover services in the event of the usual vehicle being unavailable. Much like 148, 721 has seen daily use on E11 between Longstanton and the College since early February. Since the usual bus, HIG 4566, headed over to the yard earlier in the week, fellow RH Olympian HIG 4577 has covered E11 allowing 721 to head over to the yard, too! Thank goodness P4 GHA returned.
