Standing on the frozen pond, I saw the sun coming up behind the trees and knew I had to include it in the frame: I wanted a touch of warmth to balance all the cold blue ice and frost. But I also knew the contrast range was far beyond what I could capture.
Enter the HDR mindset. I don't use HDR processing often. This time I did. With camera on tripod, I made seven different exposures. Later in Photoshop, I selected three (for highlights, dark areas, and middle tones), and made minor adjustments before blending them in Nik Effects HDR, selecting the preset that I liked best. Back in Photoshop, I tweaked the composite. I generally find HDR too contrasty and garish, so I did some selective desaturating, then went to bed.
Next morning, I saw that I had desaturated too much and sucked the life out of the image, so I added a bit of saturation and vibrance - especially to the sky - until the scene resembled my memory of it fairly closely. We can't reproduce reality, but I tried to place the viewer beside me on that frozen pond, with the sun rising. And without the cold.
It was unbelievably slippery, by the way. I had left my crampons in the car, of course, so I navigated the pond ice by collapsing my tripod and pushing it ahead of me like a walker. Run, walk, crawl, whatever it takes...

The North Sea is a little on the rough side and is coming over the top of the sea wall at Scarborough somewhat, 28th December 2016. Whilst most people are standing well back a few are “playing dare” with the oncoming waves. Your hardy photographer thought he was in a “place of safety” whilst taking this photograph, however a North Sea drenching a few moments later disproved that theory leaving him very wet and bedraggled.

The Lancahire Witches.
The trials of the Pendle witches in 1612 are among the most famous witch trials in English history, and some of the best recorded of the 17th century. The twelve accused lived in the area surrounding Pendle Hill in Lancashire, and were charged with the murders of ten people by the use of witchcraft.
In 2014 had ik een hecktische week in het hoge Noorden. Na een weekend werkzaamheden tussen Meppel en Zwolle stond er een week van overbrengingen naar het hele hoge Noorden op het programma. Daarom zat ik toen de hele week in een hotel in de regio. Op 7 juli 2014, vandaag 10 jaar geleden was ik onderweguit de Eemshaven naar mijn hotel in de omgeving Zwolle en werd er een stop ingelast bij Nieuwleusen. Hier zien we de 1612 van DBC met ketels uit Roodeschool en Delfzijl als trein 61300 naar Kijfhoek passeren in een lekker oranjezonnetje.
Tijdens de ingelaste werkzaamheden aan de Moerdijkbrug vlak voordat de werkzaamheden bij Zevenaar begonnen reden veel goederentreinen een forse omweg. Zo ook zoals in dit geval de redelijk schone 1612 met een vanwege de werkzaamheden via Utrecht en daarmee bjina 3 uur langer onderweg zijnde omgeleide lange trein van voornamelijk ketelwagens uit Moerdijk en Sloe als trein 62015 op weg naar Kijfhoek op de heerlijk zonnige middag van 14 april 2016.
