I made this photo from my car as Coyote watched me from just off the road. Great to have close up photo ops like this, but not so healthy for the critter. Ranchers generally don't like them around and many will shoot them on sight. The fear, of course, is predation on livestock, and it does happen. However, not all coyotes become livestock killers. A rancher I know has said, "We don't automatically shoot them; we only shoot the ones that attack our animals. The coyote passing by might not be a livestock killer, and he might be the dominant one that keeps others away."
A coyote can have a long life here provided it keeps away from people and houses, and there's plenty of natural prey, eg. rodents and birds. Within Grasslands National Park they are protected, but collisions with vehicles inside park boundaries do happen. Sometimes those vehicles are driven by visitors, other times by park employees. All going too fast.
Therefore with every close encounter like this, I experience mixed feelings. Am I habituating the animal and likely to contribute to its death? The answer may well be yes. Three hours after this encounter, driving home, the young coyote was still in the area. I watched it for a while from my car, then sneaked up on it, using hay bales for cover, and jumped out with a great yell; my little friend ran as if pursued by devils. In his world, this is not metaphor. A little less boldness and a little more wariness might allow him to continue being a coyote, sitting at the top of the food chain out here, making a good living in the rodent extermination business. And at twilight their eerie voices will continue to drift from afar, from just over those hills, the excited yips and yaps, the plaintive howls that remind us of wildness and a world that hasn't entirely vanished beneath the crush of our civilization.

Southbound through the rolling terrain just North of Ray Minnesota on the former Duluth WInnipeg & Pacific line. Managed to get a cloudy bright shot between the frequent rain showers yesterday.
