The first thing that impresses you when you leave your vehicle at the parking area at Urriðafoss is the roar. When a river the size of the Þjórsá falls even 12 feet (4 meters), as is the case here, the noise is deafening. Located between Selfoss on the north and Hella on the south, the falls is the largest by water volume of any falls in Iceland. Water drops across the falls at a rate of 360 m3/sec (more than 12,700 cubic feet a second) and that is impressive across a cascade that is 229 meters wide (750 feet). In a land of spectacular waterfalls, a 12 foot drop does not get much attention but it is beautiful in it own right. The falls, or better called a segmented cascade, stretch across the Þjórsá separated by several small islands. The majority of the river funnels into a narrow chute in the middle of the river, with the near bank featuring more of a stair-step type drops.

Þjórsá is Iceland's longest river stretching over 230 km (143 miles) and is its second largest river by volume. It is fed by glaciers and springs and often has the milky appearance typical of glacial runoff. Salmon and Sea Trout swim up the Þjórsá far past the falls to breed. The falls historically are an important fishing site especially during the fish migration. Urriðafoss translates as Trout Falls.

The cliffs along the river expose the edge of Þjórsárhraun lava field. This volcanic flow covers more than 1000 km2 and gets as much as 20 m thick. Þjórsárhraun lava field is believed to be the largest lava flow on earth since in the last 10,000 years. The basalt came from a fissure somewhere in the East Volcanic Zone about 8,600 years ago. The exact location of the lava’s source is unknown because the area was buried in younger flows.

During the first half of the 20th century the famous Icelandic entrepreneur and poet Einar Benediktsson, who had big dreams about Hydroelectric power plants in Iceland, wanted to build a dam in the Þjórsá by the waterfall Urriðafoss. So far, those dreams have not been realized but, even now plans, circulate for a dam and a 130 MW hydroelectric generating station at Urriðafoss which would result in the waterfall becoming substantially reduced in volume or destroy it all together. Local residents continue to fight to preserve the falls.

It's grey, but it's nice grey. The Portuguese sprayed their P-3s in this attractive scheme early in the 1990s.

The first P-3P entered service in 1988, the last (14805) was retired in October 2011. Replaced by P-3Cs bought from the Netherlands Navy.
