Unfortunately this photo is no longer possible, thanks to the looters. The gun and mantlet is no longer there. Photo taken towards the year 2000 with an analog Pentax camera (SFX?).
It is a tank turret bunker built by the Wehrmacht in 1944 to monitor the Portbou - Cervera road, within the Südwall defence line, the poor and Mediterranean equivalent of the famous Atlantikwall. Specifically, it is a Pz 38 (t) tank turret. It should be noted that the turret in question is located just a few meters on the Empordà side of the border between the Spanish and French states (but Catalonia on both sides!!!), so theoretically the Germans could not build anything there. But Franco's soldiers did not complain, despite having the customs just 50 meters away!

The date of this photo by Paul Darrel is unknown, but appears to be in the late 1950s or 1960s. Perhaps the change of serial number on the side from USN 14679 (in the previous photo) to US Navy 74-00025 in this photo might be a rough clue as to the date.
After service with the United States Navy at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California, this 1941 American LaFrance M-5 JO 100-foot aerial ladder went to the Pacific Fire Protection District in Sacramento County, California. A photo of it in service with Pacific FPD is coming soon.

THE OUTWARD BOUND
“How much (does) the whole of the Clyde district owe to the far-seeing energy of those who have made the river a great commercial highway” Sir James Marwick
By the 1850s Glasgow had become one of the world’s great industrial centres. Its position close to deposits of coal and iron ore, coupled with the forward thinking of Scottish engineers and businessmen, meant that Glasgow had a head start in the trade race.
This began in earnest when the River Clyde was dredged and widened to allow ocean-going vessels to sail into the heart of the city. Before this, merchants had to rely on small boats to sail up the shallow, winding Clyde with goods unloaded from large ships at Greenock, Port Glasgow, and the Tail of the Bank.
The maiden voyage of Henry Bell’s little steamship Comet from Port Glasgow to Glasgow’s Broomielaw in 1812 paved the way for the development of steam travel. It was the first commercially successful steamboat in Europe, and within 10 years almost 50 steam vessels had been built on the Clyde; by 1900 the number had exceeded 300. It is easy to see why “the Trade of Glasgow and the Outward Bound” was a common toast in local business circles.
