An airborne early warning (AEW) version of the Lockheed Constellation, 143221 was originally procured as a PO-2W and re-designated EC-121K after 1962.
Experience gained with EC-121 types by the US Navy and US Air Force contributed to the concept and design of the E-3 AWACS AEW aircraft that continue in service to this day.
