The main dunefield of Great Sand Dunes National Park stretches towards the wall of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. The dunes are derived from sediments blown from an ancient lake bed in the rift valley to the west (the San Luis Valley, not visible to left of the photo), shaped by occasional strong winds blowing from mountain passes in the Sangre de Cristos from the east. The combination of these opposing winds has built up the dunes to heights of over 700 feet (200 m) above the valley floor. Peaks in the Sangre de Cristos include (from center right to left) Cleveland Peak (13,369 ft / 4,074.87 m), the Crestone Peaks (14294 ft / 4357 m), and Kit Carson/ Challenger Peaks (14165 ft / 4317 m). A hiker visible on the sand ridge on the right provides a sense of scale.

INDIEN, Khajuraho (Tempel)

The Khajuraho temples feature a variety of art work, of which 10% is sexual or erotic art outside and inside the temples. Some of the temples that have two layers of walls have small erotic carvings on the outside of the inner wall. Some scholars suggest these to be tantric sexual practices.[54] Other scholars state that the erotic arts are part of Hindu tradition of treating kama as an essential and proper part of human life, and its symbolic or explicit display is common in Hindu temples.[5][55] James McConnachie, in his history of the Kamasutra, describes the sexual-themed Khajuraho sculptures as "the apogee of erotic art":

The last light of the day gives a warm glow to the dunes below the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Great Sand Dunes are the result of river/ stream deposited sediments, blown from an ancient lake bed in the rift valley to the west (left of the photo), and occasional strong winds blown from mountain passes in the Sangre de Cristos from the east. The combination of these opposing winds has built up the dunes to heights of over 700 feet (200 m) above the valley floor. Peaks in the Sangre de Cristos include (from right to left) Cleveland Peak (13,369 ft / 4,074.87 m), the Crestone Peaks (14294 ft / 4357 m), and Kit Carson/ Challenger Peaks (14165 ft / 4317 m). See '1953, Utrecht, family in snow' On Black!

Another wintershot, probably taken in the Wilhelminapark in Utrecht, the same winter as this one. The whole family consisted of four brothers (at that time, that is; in december of 1953 my twin brother and sister would be born). I vaguely remember the coat my mother is wearing. She looks so elegant in it!

Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, Colorado

Humboldt Peak is the first 14er I've climbed (14064). It's considered the easiest of the nine 14000 plus ft peaks in the Sangre de Cristo Range - not that it was easy. The last 1000 vertical feet involved climbing up a boulder field that varied from 30 to 60 degrees. The trailhead is 5 miles from the peak and involves 4000 ft of elevation gain. The trailhead is accessed by a really bad road that requires a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle.

This photo was taken from the false summit of Humboldt Peak. In this picture the high peak on the left is Crestone Needle (14197) and the one at the center is Crestone Peak (14294). The highest point on the right is Kit Carson Peak (14165).

20220811_9040_7D2-80 747SP N747NA departs

NASA's 747SP N747NA departed Christchurch for the final ever time today (11th August). It did a low level pass over the city, came back down the main runway and did a thank you wing wave before climbing, turning to the north and headed to Honolulu (refuelling stop) and then to it's base at Palmdale, arriving there just after 16 hours after leaving CHC.

The top of Humboldt Peak has a false summit and a true summit with a nearly flat saddle between. This photo was taken from the saddle looking back at the false summit. The high peak to the far left of the false summit is Crestone Needle (14197). The one just left of the false summit is Crestone Peak (14294). Do you see the hiker on the slope just below Crestone Peak? The highest point to the right of the false summit is Kit Carson Peak (14165)
