I was so lucky that day. A coyote ran across the park road in front of my car, and then allowed me to tag along - on foot - for the next two hours. The light was fantastic and the air temperature wasn't uncomfortable (no wind).

An F-16C Fighting Falcon with the Spads of the 457th Fighter Squadron returns to NAS JRB Fort Worth.
Today's story and sketch by me #1412, Is about the latest arrivals to our Tropical Volcanic Planet we call Budahunga, twelve alien beings, in an antique camper, who were dropped out of a Big Black Vortex, a type a type of time, space portal, that we have not previously seen. We were on patrol when we spotted it spinning above like a giant tornado, we watched it getting closer and closer to lake Budahunga, we followed few a safe miles away, until it dropped to the ground and we watched it disappear. Deputy Quow and myself flew here where it had disappeared, but before it disappeared, it dropped the camper with a dozen fuzzy headed aliens that we have never run across. Where the fuzzy headed aliens were when they were abducted by the Black Vortex, how they acquired the vintage airstream camper, and what power in the Cosmos was responsible for bringing them here to Budahunga, sadly those will have to be stories for another time, until then Tata the Rod Blog.,
I made this shot the same morning as yesterday's offering (with the golden light). What a day! The hoarfrost was as thick as I've seen it; every branch, twig, and blade of grass carried a thick white coating. I made this shot down low, camera on the tripod, wide angle zoom stopped down for maximum depth of field.
Although the photo makes this landscape look cold - and one expects the northern prairie to be cold in December - it wasn't. I'm serious. I had to take my wool hat off because I was roasting and didn't want my hair to get sweat-soaked. Likewise it was more comfortable to work bare handed, so my mitts, fingerless wool gloves, and light liner gloves all got jammed into my pockets.

This was my last winter hike in the park until - well, until next winter. In a couple of days I'm off to the West Coast until April. Meanwhile, I am packing and cleaning and trying not to forget anything important.
For a last hike, I picked a pretty good morning. Fog gave way to sunshine, and although the ground was coated in hoarfrost, it wasn't cold at all. This is the view from North Butte, looking into the heart of Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan.

I see these little predators almost every time I drive through the park or on nearby country roads, and sometimes when I'm hiking. Usually, though, they aren't so close, in such beautiful light.

It's extremely rare to be accepted by a coyote in this area; this year the two pairs I see regularly in the park run from my car. Many times in the past I've been able to shoot from the car while these animals went about their business (hunting rodents, teasing badgers, etc.) - but the friendly encounters on foot can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Three.
This was the second of those. I was able to walk the prairie with this little predator for more than two hours and it was one of my lifetime thrills.

A small duck that winters (among other places) along the south coast of Vancouver Island. Always fun to photograph during breeding season, they still offer photo ops in a mid-winter swim-by.
