This is the first in a series of historical informative images.Vicar's Close next to Wells Cathedral is a stunning medieval cobbled street said to be the oldest continually occupied street in Europe. It was built in 1360 by Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury.

NGC 1360 is a planetary nebula in the Fornax constellation, around 1500 light years from earth.

You're essentially looking at the remnants of a "dead" star that has ejected its shell (the gas cloud you see was once the star's outer layer). Interestingly, this specific planetary nebula looks quite different from what we would expect. Typically, we only see oxygen emissions (the green/blue'ish colour) close to the remnants of our "dead" star because the energy emitted by it is still potent enough to ionize the oxygen (for the sake of simplicity, think of it as the material getting energized and emitting light in the process). As we move further and further away from the remnants of the star, energy emissions become less potent up to the point where there's not enough to ionize the oxygen and we should instead see emissions of less energy demanding elements being dominant (hydrogen for example, resulting in a red'ish colour). That's clearly not the case here. So why is that?

The answer lies with the big bright object you see right at the center of the nebula. This is not a foreground star, but one that's actually in the nebula itself. On top of that, it's a quite massive and very energetic star. Its energy emissions alone basically overrule everything I just explained and causes oxygen to be ionized all throughout the structure, resulting in the somewhat different aesthetics.

Op 27 oktober 2017 maakte 52 1360 een rit met lege rijtuigen van Eisenach naar Meiningen. De dag begon met zware bewolking, maar enkele minuten voor de trein hier de vijver bij Hauenhof passeerde brak de zon door.

Today's story and sketch by me #1360, Is about the pedestrian that was just dumped out of a time Portal (Black Hole), right where he is standing. Seems this Dude, has his photo on the wall of every post office in the Galaxy. He is only known as Sparky, the Most wanted arsonist in 13 Dimensions. Seems he had just like started a forest fire on the Planet Raggadi in dimension twenty, And as he was running for his life escaping the flames, which had become dangerously out of control. When Sparky was just about out of breath, whezzing from lungs full of hemp smoke, the Planet Raggadi is one large hemp forest. When Sparky was about to fall unconscious, he fell face first into a time portal (Black Hole), only this one was a (Blue Smokey Grey) variety, very rare in Dimension twenty. Just how and why Sparky escaped certain death, and was transported to this Tropical Volcanic Planet we call Budahunga, will have to be a story for another time, until then Tata the Rod Blog.

I shot this target a few years back, however, I was plagued with guiding issues. This attempt has more broadband light in an attempt to get more stars within the nebula.

This large beautiful planetary nebula can be found in the constellation Fornax. Its common name, “The Robin’s Egg Nebula” describes the object perfectly. It looks like a Robins egg floating in space. NGC 1360 is a typical evolved planetary nebula. The term evolved means “aging”, and that the planetary nebula does not contain any obvious shell morphology. Contrasting this, if you compare this with another planetary nebula, i.e., “The Skull Nebula” you will find defined well-marked boundaries and symmetry present in younger Planetary Nebula (PN). NGC 1360 is fairly diffuse and showing areas interacting with the interstellar medium.

The interesting colour is caused by the excitation of oxygen from its hot central star. In fact, the central star is known to be a binary star system consisting of two evolved white dwarf stars.

Reddish jet like glows located along the longer axis are believed to have been ejected from the original star before its final collapse. In time, everything will fade, with just the white dwarf in the centre remaining. It will take several billion years to finally cool off.

Crossing over from Rivière-Beaudette to Saint-Zotique about here
