The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is home to the oldest trees in the world, Bristlecone Pines. Some of these living trees exceed 4000 years of age and exhibit spectacular growth forms of twisted and beautifully colored wood as seen here.

At 10pm the clouds closed up in the sky and the rain started pouring down, and after 3 straight days of shooting I nestled in for a much needed nights rest. I made dinner and turned in for the night. At 12am the clouds broke and I rolled back out of bed and hit the road up to Schulman grove towards the Discovery Trail. My shot window was to be at 11:45 so I was already past my primary alignment time but I had been trying to get this tree with the Milky Way behind it for some time. I guess you could say that it was my big white whale and I was Ahab. I would have my ancient beast, rain or shine. This tree is super skinny when shot from the side so I was forced into this composition by necessity and I couldn't budge one more foot to the left because I wanted the wide perspective. I should have done a panorama but I was suffering from serious sleep deprivation and staggered my way back to the car semi happy with my nights bounty.

It's been 5 months since I've had a photo explored and I am getting quite downtrodden. If you like this photo please leave a comment and maybe together we can change that. Point Pelee National Park is the southernmost part of mainland Canada extending for 15 kilometers into Lake Erie. The park is a sandspit formation or simply a spit which is a landmass that was formed due to transportation of sediment by long-shore drifts and currents along a beach. About 70% of Point Pelee is composed of marsh that is dotted with cattails and ponds. Point Pelee has the longest continuous natural beach in Essex County. The southernmost beach of mainland Canada!

Sun almost going down to the end of the lake, watching kids playing at the beach, seems going back to the childhood… How nice keeping the child-heart forever…

This summer is a very special summer, I could hardly feel it, either staying at work office or home wearing sweater due to air-conditioning during the weekdays… Only going out on the weekend, so hot summer (over 30C most of daytime, 67 years record high, no longer arctic anymore ;))... not comfortable staying in the hotel due to virus when going out, had to drive back very late on the end of the day (12am last night) because one-way driving is 3 hours on the highway, no way to take sunrise photos, just sunset… I called it COVID summer… ;))

I didn't expect to see much freight during the extended weekend in Kent / Sussex, so wasn't unduly surprised when those I did see could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Two of them passed Tonbridge within 20 minutes of each other, including the one above, the third was an engineers' train topped and tailed by class 73s spotted near Ashford from a moving train (so no shot there), and the final one was in fact a light engine movement, happily another class 73, seen at Lewes. There were a few others on the move, but they just didn't line up with our schedule.

When I saw this one was running I opted to skip breakfast and took a swift walk down to the station. The line lies almost on a West - East axis so the residual mist hanging around was nicely illuminated by the early morning sun - atmospheric conditions I thought, even if it did subdue the colour.

The loco is Colas 'Shed' unit 66850 ‘David Maidment OBE’ hauling the 7.14am Hoo Junction Up Yard - Springhead Junction (6C01) engineers' train, signalled to take the platform loop for a driver change.

I left the junction in the composition to exploit the glint off the rails which, interestingly enough with the diamond crossings, looks more reminiscent of 1970s Newcastle than Newcastle does these days.

Another one that's best viewed full-screen.
