Macro Mondays: "Iron" theme

Socket sets are generally made from chrome vanadium steel, which is mainly composed of iron, alloyed with several elements including chromium, vanadium, and carbon. This handle with 1/2-inch socket is quite old and has picked up some rust along the way.

We rarely see Monarchs in Spring here since we are on their return route south in the Fall. But we've seen several this Spring - and this old, faded lady Monarch below visited our milkweed plants on April 14th laying eggs. But I could never find any caterpillars - until today!!! So far - there are 6! So ... the nursery is back in business.

Btw - for those of you who saw our garage full of plants protected from the threat of frost back on April 21st (photo below) ... these eggs/caterpillars were stuffed into the garage all along ;-)

We have several of these large gecko outside our house. They keep the bugs down efficiently. They can grow up to 300mm (12inch) in Philippines... ours are a bit smaller than that. And yes they are very vocal if you disturb them and they have a strong bite.

Perched on a Hosta seed pod, this Hover Fly is very small at about 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) so it is quite a challenge to photograph.

The common name of this particular Hoverfly species is Maize Calligrapher, with its botanical name being Toxomerus Politus.

Its defense against predators is its bee-like appearance, though it has no stinger, so it's harmless. This is called Batesian mimicry in the animal world.

Along with butterflies and bees, the Hoverfly is a prolific pollinator, so it has a very important role in the ecosystem.

I love the blue stripes on its colorful body! And those red eyes. :)
