The snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) is a passerine bird in the family Calcariidae. It is an Arctic specialist, with a circumpolar Arctic breeding range throughout the northern hemisphere. There are small isolated populations on a few high mountain tops south of the Arctic region, including the Cairngorms in central Scotland and the Saint Elias Mountains on the southern Alaska-Yukon border, and also Cape Breton Highlands. The snow bunting is the most northerly recorded passerine in the world. Wikipedia.

K-3072 was one of many F-5As in the inventory in the Royal Dutch Air Force, until they were completely withdrawn. this particular machine later saw service with the Turks.

The type was unusual in that, unlike the two-seat T-38 variant, the Americans decided this aircraft would be aimed at the export market, but a few did also operate for the USAF.

Also, many were licence built, and these Dutch ones were manufactured by Canadair, and were often labelled as NF-5A aircraft.

Painted in US Army markings. This aircraft in fact served with the French Army. It was registered in the US as N305TA on 13Sep72.

The following is from the museums website.

The Bird Dog was first built in 1950 by the Cessna Aircraft Company as a reconnaissance plane for the U.S. Army. Between 1950 and 1964 a total of 3,398 airframes were built. Originally called the L-19, it was later re-designated the 0-1 in 1962. It saw extensive combat duty in Korea and Vietnam, serving with the U.S. Army, USAF, USMC and a host of 19 foreign countries. Many people consider the Bird Dog the finest observation aircraft ever produced.

Painted in the markings of the US Army 183rd Sea horses Reconnaissance Airplane Company as deployed to Vietnam in May 1966, the Bird Dog on display at our Chino facility serves as a flying tribute to the many brave pilots who flew Forward Air Control, visual and photo reconnaissance, artillery adjustment, and search and rescue missions during that war. Typically armed with only white phosphorous smoke' (Willie Pete) target-marking rockets, hand grenades and an automatic rifle in the cockpit, some enterprising crews of this slow and low-flying observation aircraft soon sought modifications to include wing or cabin-mounted M60 machine guns, giving their Bird Dogs a more lethal "bite."

This particular Bird Dog left the Cessna factory and went directly into service with the Armee de Terre (French Army), where it served for approximately 20 years before returning to the United States and the civilian market.
