My first view of the city as we flew over Florida on the way to Tampa and before we flew out and over Tampa Bay. I liked the street layout and designs.

Against the Onslaught of Fascism in West Bengal!! 19/04/12 .
The Trinamool government in West Bengal, ever since it came to power, has been launching one attack after another on the democratic rights of the people in the state. There is a concerted attempt to eliminate every kind of dissent and democratic resistance. This is accompanied by a relentless attack on the livelihoods of the poor. The Trinamool government is pursuing a policy of pauperizing the toiling masses, on the one hand, and crushing their protest and resistance, on the other. The democratic structures in West Bengal have been painstakingly built by the struggles of the working people of the state. The left-democratic forces forged these structures through intense and fierce struggle with ruling class parties. The thrust towards democratization was ushered in by the left movement in the state in the face of semi-fascist and tyrannical opposition from the Congress government in the 1970s. Through land reforms, institution of an extensive panchayati raj system, large scale unionization of students, workers, peasants and other sections of the people, a democratic fabric was put in place which could enable the working masses to have a substantial say in their own destiny. The economic advancement of the toiling masses of West Bengal would depend crucially on the extent to which these structures were preserved and strengthened. The Trinamool government is determined to undermine and destroy this democratic fabric. Its basic class interest lies in the dismantling of these painstakingly instituted democratic mechanisms. The Trinamool government understandsthat if the exploitation of the masses of Bengal is to be intensified, then these democratic roadblocks unions, panchayats, strikes, right to dissent -forged by the left movement through decades of struggle, must be removed. It is this which drives the TMC to mount one fascist assault after another on the liberties and livelihoods of the people. .
Physical Assaults on Left Activists .
Since the last Lok Sabha elections in 2009, more than 450 left activists have been butchered in the state by TMC goons, often in collusion with Maoist mercenaries. The number of left activists killed since the TMC government took charge has reached 58. Recently two members of the Burdwan District Committee of the CPI(M) -Comrade Pradip Tah and Comrade Kamal Gayen -were murdered in broad daylight by TMC henchmen. Earlier, Comrade Sujit Biswas of the SFI, aged 20, was murdered in cold blood by Tinamool lumpens in Islampur. Such ghastly killings of left activists and sympathisers have become a routine affair today in West Bengal. .
.
The Onslaught Against Democratic Rights .
There has been a massive onslaught on the fundamental political right of unionisation. A systematic attempt is being made to curb student politics on campuses throughout the state. Though an ordinance, the TMC government has attempted toinitiate a process of substituting elected student unions with nominated 'management committees'. It has unleashed massive violence in several universities where students have protested against this infringement of campus democracy. University democracy has been built brick-by-brick by left-progressive forces in the state. The TMC government has been attempting to dismantle this very structure. Workers rights have been extensively attacked as well. On 2nd February, the TMC government issued a notice curbing trade union rights of government staff -the right to unionise, the right to bargain and the right to strike. The all-India trade unions' strike called on 28th February, and the campaign leading up to that, saw widespread repression from the Trinamool government. The government tried its level best to put down the strike -through threats, violence and curbing media rights. The resilience of the workers, however, ensured that the strike was a massive success in the state. The Trinamool government is launching a widespread attack on the right to freedom of expression. In its fascist attempt to gag dissent, it is employing every conceivable method. The recent arrest of a Jadavpur University professor, Ambikesh Mahapatra, for circulating a cartoon on the internet, is a stark example. The TMC government is now admittedly probing the internet, particularly social networking websites, for more such communist 'conspiracies'! Earlier, on 27th March, the Trinamool government had issued a notice specifying which newspapers can be read in public libraries and which cannot. A vast range of popular newspapers, apart from ones with obvious TMC connections, were taken off public library list. There have also been shameful attempts to manipulate the content of education. A syllabus 'reform' committee has come up with recommendations which represent a serious attack on the progressive content of education in West Bengal. The committee has advocated removing the emphasis on progressive movements and thinkers, particularly in history textbooks, with the aim of 'correcting' the 'communist bias' in education in the state! The progressive content of education in Bengal -the so-called 'communist bias' -is a hard-earned legacy of the left movement of the state. The fascist Trinamool government is making this legacy one of its principal targets. .
.
The Attack on Livelihoods .
There has been a sustained attack on the livelihoods of the people by the Trinamool government. Major attempts have been made to reverse the historic land reforms in West Bengal, achieved by the toiling masses of the state under the tenure of the Left Front government. Trinamool-backed landlord forces have been violently dispossessing the poor peasantry of the state of these historic hard-won gains. Since the Trinamool came to power, 3511 poor sharecroppers have been forciblyevicted from their land. 4707 legal patta holders have been physically driven out of their pattas by armies of the locallords with the patronage of the TMC. 124 incidents of looting crops from 1486 acres belonging to the poor peasantryhave been recorded since the TMC assumed power. .
