The tulip is a perennial, bulbous plant with showy flowers in the genus Tulipa, of which around 75 wild species are currently accepted and which belongs to the family Liliaceae.

The genus's native range extends west to the Iberian Peninsula, through North Africa to Greece, the Balkans, Turkey, throughout the Levant (Syria, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan) and Iran, North to Ukraine, southern Siberia and Mongolia, and east to the Northwest of China. The tulip's centre of diversity is in the Pamir, Hindu Kush, and Tien Shan mountains. It is a typical element of steppe and winter-rain Mediterranean vegetation. A number of species and many hybrid cultivars are grown in gardens, as potted plants, or as cut flowers.

Tulips are spring-blooming perennials that grow from bulbs. Depending on the species, tulip plants can be between 4 inches (10 cm) and 28 inches (71 cm) high. The tulip's large flowers usually bloom on scapes with leaves in a rosette at ground level and a single flowering stalk arising from amongst the leaves.Tulip stems have few leaves. Larger species tend to have multiple leaves. Plants typically have two to six leaves, some species up to 12. The tulip's leaf is strap-shaped, with a waxy coating, and the leaves are alternately arranged on the stem; these fleshy blades are often bluish green in color. Most tulips produce only one flower per stem, but a few species bear multiple flowers on their scapes (e.g. Tulipa turkestanica). The generally cup or star-shaped tulip flower has three petals and three sepals, which are often termed tepals because they are nearly identical. These six tepals are often marked on the interior surface near the bases with darker colorings. Tulip flowers come in a wide variety of colors, except pure blue (several tulips with "blue" in the name have a faint violet hue).

The flowers have six distinct, basifixed stamens with filaments shorter than the tepals. Each stigma has three distinct lobes, and the ovaries are superior, with three chambers. The tulip's seed is a capsule with a leathery covering and an ellipsoid to globe shape. Each capsule contains numerous flat, disc-shaped seeds in two rows per chamber. These light to dark brown seeds have very thin seed coats and endosperm that does not normally fill the entire seed.

Etymology

The word tulip, first mentioned in western Europe in or around 1554 and seemingly derived from the "Turkish Letters" of diplomat Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq, first appeared in English as tulipa or tulipant, entering the language by way of French: tulipe and its obsolete form tulipan or by way of Modern Latin tulīpa, from Ottoman Turkish tülbend ("muslin" or "gauze"), and may be ultimately derived from the Persian: دلبند‎ delband ("Turban"), this name being applied because of a perceived resemblance of the shape of a tulip flower to that of a turban. This may have been due to a translation error in early times, when it was fashionable in the Ottoman Empire to wear tulips on turbans. The translator possibly confused the flower for the turban.

Tulips are called laleh (from Persian لاله, lâleh) in Persian, Turkish, Arabic, and Bulgarian. In Arabic letters, "laleh" is written with the same letters as Allah, which is why the flower became a holy symbol. It was also associated with the House of Osman, resulting in tulips being widely used in decorative motifs on tiles, mosques, fabrics, crockery, etc. in the Ottoman Empire

Cultivation

Tulip cultivars have usually several species in their direct background, but most have been derived from Tulipa suaveolens, often erroneously listed as Tulipa schrenkii. Tulipa gesneriana is in itself an early hybrid of complex origin and is probably not the same taxon as was described by Conrad Gesner in the 16th century.

Tulips are indigenous to mountainous areas with temperate climates and need a period of cool dormancy, known as vernalization. They thrive in climates with long, cool springs and dry summers. Tulip bulbs imported to warm-winter areas of are often planted in autumn to be treated as annuals.

Tulip bulbs are typically planted around late summer and fall, in well-drained soils, normally from 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) deep, depending on the type. Species tulips are normally planted deeper.

Propagation

Tulips can be propagated through bulb offsets, seeds or micropropagation. Offsets and tissue culture methods are means of asexual propagation for producing genetic clones of the parent plant, which maintains cultivar genetic integrity. Seeds are most often used to propagate species and subspecies or to create new hybrids. Many tulip species can cross-pollinate with each other, and when wild tulip populations overlap geographically with other tulip species or subspecies, they often hybridize and create mixed populations. Most commercial tulip cultivars are complex hybrids, and often sterile.

Offsets require a year or more of growth before plants are large enough to flower. Tulips grown from seeds often need five to eight years before plants are of flowering size. Commercial growers usually harvest the tulip bulbs in late summer and grade them into sizes; bulbs large enough to flower are sorted and sold, while smaller bulbs are sorted into sizes and replanted for sale in the future. The Netherlands are the world's main producer of commercial tulip plants, producing as many as 3 billion bulbs annually, the majority for export.

A new year and a new set of challenges. I've recently upgraded my digital darkroom, which I'm in the process of getting to grips with. I have switched over to Mac and am running Lightroom 5 and Photoshop elements 12. The whole setup is very different to what I've been use to in the past and I've got so much to learn.

I am safely tucked away far from home until Hurricane Florence finishes her hissy fit. It seems things are holding strong there and in spite of us getting wind and rain, we may not get much of the surge other than on the oceanfront and part of beach road (South 12)

The south end of Hatteras National seashore has several breaches with overwash on South 12 and the road is closed...further south and northern SC have a lot of power outages. I will go to bed with prayers for those south of where I live and hold out hope that it will not get worse where my house is or north of me, as the surge moves into the sound and up the rivers that feed the sound and ocean.

It has been a long week...and I am tired, I just want to be back to my happy place and back to work!

On October 12, the day of the Virgin of Pilar, people parade throughout the center of Zaragoza in regional Aragonese costumes, although also from other parts of Spain and the world. All of them participate by bringing their bouquet of flowers to weave the mantle of the Virgin of Pilar, which for this occasion is taken outside.

Korykos Castle, locally known as Korykos Kalesi, lies at the beach next to the town of Kizkalesi in the province of Mersin in Turkey.

Together with the opposite Kizkalesi Castle, a supplementary castle on a small island in the bay of Kizkalesi, this coastal castle protected the port of Korykos and of course their histories are linked closely together and almost identical. Korykos Castle was also the principal guardian of the strategic coastal road between the towns of Silifke and Tarsus.

In ancient times there was an antique harbor city named Korykos or Corycus here. It is possible that the site of Korykos was heavily fortified prior to the Arab invasions, but there is no evidence to confirm this.

Around 1099 Korykos was conquered by the Byzantines. The erection of the castles can probably be credited to the reign of the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos. Except for reconstruction during and after the Armenian period of occupation in the late 12th century(far more extensive in the sea castle than in the land castle), the circuit walls and towers of both castles date from the early 12th century.

The emperor's daughter, Anna Comnena, tells us that the royal eunuch Eustathius was dispatched as an admiral and was directed to fortify Korykos and more southerly Silifke. The strategy was to defend it from any possible seizure by the Crusader Bohemund I de Guiscard. A large garrison was maintained at Korykos and Silifke under the command of a certain Strategus Strabo. Exactly when the Armenians occupied the Byzantine castles at Korykos is unknown.

By 1198/99 the site seems to have been under the control of Leo I, King of Armenian Cilicia, as Simon, the Baron of Korykos, was in attendance at his coronation. Following Vahram's brief tenure as Lord of Korykos (1210-12), the Hethumid Baron Oshin held the position until the late 1260's. In the 4th quarter of the 13th century the Armenian historian Hethum followed Grigoris as master of the port. Some years later he died tragically in a battle against the Mamluks. In 1318 Hethum's son, another Oshin, took 300 troops from the garrison at Korykos Castle and succeeded (temporarily) in driving out a band of Turks.

In 1360 Peter I, the King of Cyprus, assumed control over Korykos when it became clear that the Mamluks were soon to conquer all of Cilicia. Robert of Lusignan was dispatched from Cyprus to administer the port. With Cypriot assistance the residents of Korykos were able to repulse a Karamanid attack in 1367. This fortified port proved to be a profitable toll station until its capture by the Karamanids in 1448.

Korykos Castle is built on the relatively flat ground of the rocky shore and is characterized by the almost square shape of a tight double trace with square towers. This is the only fully concentric plan for a fortification in Cilicia. In the southern corner there is a sea gate and the north east side of the castle is protected by a deep ditch cut out of the rock.

At present Korykos Castle can be visited for a small fee. This is a great castle ruin with lots to explore.

It had taken a while for Aiden to fall asleep after that strange moment on the top deck with the captain. He'd laid there in his hammock, going through everything in his head again. Vincent had been fine until his hometown had been brought up. Honestly, why did he care so much? Yeah, he liked the captain but they were barely even friends. When he finally fell asleep, he shut his eyes with a slight crease in his brow.

The next day came like any other and upon seeing Vincent at breakfast, the captain acted as if the conversation last night hadn't happened at all. Vincent was finishing tea and some breakfast when Aiden came to the kitchen. They exchanged their usual morning greetings before Vincent left to get ready for their arrival to the capital.

An hour later, the capitol was in sight and Aiden was amazed by the size of it! He'd heard it was huge but wow! Aiden stood near Vincent, holding onto the ship tight as the captain pulled Leon's Claw into port.

Business went on as usual as it did on the docks with Vincent and Damien working on deck while Aiden did his post-flight inspection, securing everything in the engine room for their extended stay. Afterwards, he went to assist Damien and soon enough, everything was done!

Damien had family in town and was going to be staying with them. However, as he stood on the gangplank*, he scowled at Vincent who stood with a slightly amused look on his face. "Vincent, are you SURE you don't want me to come over?" Vincent smirked and rolled his eyes before taking Damien's bag and pushing it into his arms. "I'm sure. I'll be fine. I'll see you tomorrow night." It took a bit more convincing but soon Damien was off heading for his family's home in town.

Vincent turned and saw Aiden sitting nearby on a barrel eating one of those red apples he enjoyed so much. Aiden smirked a bit and said, "Insistent, isn't he?" Vincent gave a small shrug and glanced over his shoulder and watched as Damien disappeared into the crowd. "Eh, he'll be fine. He's always such a worrywart." He looked back at Aiden and gazed into his eyes for a long moment. "And you're going to be fine on Leon's Claw?" Aiden grinned cheekily at Vincent. "I'll be fine. Careful, Captain. I think Damien's worrywart is starting to spread." Vincent gave a slight chuckle and slid his hands into his pockets. "Right. Well then, I'm off. If there is an emergency, here's my address. The dock master knows you are staying here."

Aiden took the small slip of paper with the captain's address, his fingers accidentally brushing his. He felt a familiar warmth and tingly feeling spread through his fingers as their skin made contact. "Thank you, Captain." "You're welcome. Have a good day and see you soon, Aiden." "Good day, Captain." With that, Vincent collected his luggage before taking his leave.

The first thing Aiden did as soon as the captain departed was to grab his money bag, lock up the ship, and hurry towards the post office. Sure enough there was a letter from Papa! Aiden was so excited to receive the letter and quickly raced back to Leon's Claw to read it! He felt overwhelmed seeing his father's handwriting and could hear his voice speaking as he read the words, updating his son about life at home and how he was spending more time in Ms. Moore's company. It seemed like his father may find love again after all!

Aiden spent the rest of the day out on the docks. He got to see a huge airship make port and watch from a close distance as it did! It had been an experience just to see it done so masterfully! The crew worked together so perfectly! Though as he watched, he began to think about how he really did adore Leon's Claw, as small as it was. It really had started to become home. It was a little hard to imagine living on another airship.

Aiden had made a good amount of money working on Leon's Claw; more than he'd ever made in his life! So he decided he was going to treat himself to a nice dinner. However, he had no idea really where he'd want to eat or what to eat! So he pulled on his nicest shirt and made himself look decent and headed out! While wandering through town, he was so distracted by everything that he found himself not really grabbing anything to eat. Finally, it was dark and he saw a sign for meat pies at a tavern! Okay, that sounded really, really good! Meat pies and mead! As Aiden pushed open the door and looked around, he saw a very familiar shape...

"Captain!"

"No... nope... no ship's business... off duty... nope... can't make me."

Aiden stood there, the door open behind him as he stood in surprise. There was Vincent but he was obviously very, very drunk! His eyes were glassy and his skin was a little flushed and he seemed to sway slightly on the bench he sat on. He was staring at Aiden but seemed to have trouble keeping focus before turning and reaching for yet another mug of rum. He was dressed down far more than Aiden had ever seen him even aboard the ship. He looked like any other man wandering around town. Even his eyepatch was plain. Yet even as plainly as he was dressed, he was still very handsome as ever.

Aiden blinked, taken aback by the sight of Vincent like this! The captain didn't seem like the kind of person to drink so heavily or to make a public nuisance of himself! He glanced around the tavern and saw that the few patrons that were there were ignoring them and the man behind the counter just kind of shook his head with a small sigh. Aiden looked back at Vincent as he moved around to stand in front of him, having shut the door behind him.

"Captain, how many have you had?" Aiden asked as he peered into the pitcher of strong alcohol. "Um..." Vincent glanced at the mugs then lifted the fifth mug to his lips and said, "Thaaaaaat many." He drained it, chugging that whole half-pint down in one go! "Now....now this many!" he proclaimed loudly, slurring as he did before setting the mug down heavily on the table. "And many more!" He gave a nod and sudden loud belch before rubbing his stomach. "Pardon me!" And he reached over for the jug and began to lift it with some struggle and pour himself more to drink, but he missed and it poured on the table instead before finally getting some into the mug.

Aiden stared but quickly recovered as he reached for the pitcher and halted the captain's progress. "Captain-" "No....no, Aiden....off duty...Vincent now.. Let me...have...have my drink! I de-deserve this. I've earned it! Hey!" Vincent slurred as Aiden grabbed the pitcher from him. He huffed at Aiden and seized the mug that had half a drink in it before Aiden took that from him too. "Brat."

Aiden blinked in surprise then let out a disbelieving laugh. Did he seriously just call him that?! He glanced towards the man behind the bar who didn't look overly pleased by Vincent's intoxicated behavior as Vincent glanced over and called, "Barman...Bernard, more rum!"

"I think you've had enough," Aiden told him firmly, setting the pitcher down out of Vincent's reach. "Up you get. Come on, Captain." "Aiden, no," Vincent whined but found himself too intoxicated to really fight him on it and was hauled to his feet carefully by Aiden. Aiden glanced at the man behind the bar and asked, "Is he paid up?" "Aye," came the gruff voice. "He's paid up ahead of time. Does so every time." The man behind the bar gave a small shrug dismissively. Every time? Aiden wondered.

It was clear just how drunk Vincent was because he was very unsteady on his feet and had to cling to the edge of the table to keep from falling. He tried to reach for the pitcher but Aiden boldly wrapped his arm around the captain's waist. "Come along, Captain." "But Aiden, I wanna drink!" Vincent complained loudly. "And...and...off duty...not Captain."

Aiden began to lead Vincent out of the tavern with a small struggle once he got directions to Vincent's home from the man behind the bar. As he did, he heard the man behind the bar say to one of the patrons, "We're used to him. He does this every time he comes home; never forgave himself after-" And the door closed behind him so he missed that last part. Damn it!

Aiden had an idea where the captain's home was but he'd never been there. "Where is your home? That way, right?" he asked as they turned the corner around the tavern. Vincent glanced down the small road leading away from the tavern and said, "That way....I think....Maybe." "I hope you're right."

As they began to head down the way, Aiden's arm tightened around Vincent's waist and held him right against his side. As he did, he could smell Vincent's personal scent through the alcohol and how pleasant it felt to have someone in his arm. It felt...nice. Really nice. A soft smile perked his lips as his mind went blissfully blank in the sensation.

"Y-ya know... You should smile more... You got cute dimples riiiiiight there...."

Aiden's face went bright red and heat filled his cheeks as he felt Vincent's fingertip gently brush the small dimple at the corner of his lips. He looked away slightly and licked his lips nervously. "I-um...I.. Nuh uh!" He felt Vincent's hand press to his chest and his other hand come up and drape over his left shoulder. "Aw Aiden! You doooo! Do it ag-again! It's...it's cute!"

Aiden felt his blushing spread down his neck and under his collar as he glanced back at Vincent and saw how lovely his face looked in the moonlight as he gazed up at him so hopefully. He paused their steps and for a moment, he began to smile softly just for Vincent.

"Happy now?" Aiden asked, unable to stop that cute, small smile. Vincent's hand left Aiden's chest and brushed his fingers against the small dimple at the corner of his mouth before nodding silently and lowering his hand to Aiden's muscled chest once more.

For a long moment, Aiden stared into Vincent's eye, feeling himself getting a little lost in it as they stood there, Vincent in his arm and touching his chest and shoulder like so. This felt so nice. He could feel his heart speed up just a touch, beating harder than before.

Vincent stared back up at Aiden, leaning just a touch closer as he gazed up into his eyes. His lips parted slightly almost as if he were about to say something which made Aiden feel nervous. Then suddenly a powerful wave of nausea hit and Vincent doubled over and began to throw up at Aiden's feet! Aiden gasped in surprise, holding onto Vincent so he didn't fall over while still trying to avoid the mess!

"Oh God," Vincent groaned as he wiped at his mouth a few seconds later, Aiden pulling him around the mess on the ground. "Okay, time to get you home. Come on, Captain." Vincent gave a small nod and leaned against Aiden's side miserably, arms around Aiden's waist as he was held around his shoulders. From there, he was guided gently along a new street as they headed towards his home.

On Tuesday, December 12, the CPKC Holiday Train — looking an awful lot like the CP Holiday Train — visited the Crowsnest and Cranbrook Subdivisions.

The train heads west through Blairmore, Alberta.

Continuing my Southern Arizona Adventure 2024 with a stop in Tubac, AZ. This is stage 3 of 9. This is a place I plan on revisiting.

This is a Hudson Hornet displayed outside the Old Presidio Traders store on Tubac Road.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_Hornet

The Hudson Hornet is a full-size car manufactured by Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan from 1951 until 1954, when Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson merged to form American Motors Corporation (AMC). Hudson automobiles continued to be marketed under the Hudson brand name through the 1957 model year.

The first-generation Hudson Hornets featured a functional "step-down" design with dropped floor pan and a chassis with a lower center of gravity than contemporary vehicles that helped the car handle well — an advantage for racing.[1] The Hornet's lower and sleeker look was accentuated by streamlined styling, sometimes called "ponton" styling.

Hudson was the first automobile manufacturer to get involved in stock car racing.[12] The Hornet "dominated stock car racing in the early-1950s, when stock car racers actually raced stock cars."[7]

ChatGPT says:

Today, Tubac is known for its vibrant arts scene, featuring galleries, studios, and shops showcasing local artwork and crafts.

The Tubac Presidio State Historic Park offers a glimpse into the area's past, with preserved ruins and exhibits that highlight its significance in Arizona's history. Visitors can explore the beautiful desert landscape, enjoy outdoor activities, and participate in various festivals and events throughout the year.

The town's blend of history, art, and natural beauty makes it a unique destination for those looking to experience the spirit of the Southwest. Whether you're interested in exploring its historical sites or indulging in the local arts, Tubac offers something for everyone.

In German we say: Frohe Ostern!

(And for the ones of you being curious about it:

Yes, I'm still learning Norwegian --> God påske! )

Let me know how to say it in your mother tongue.

:)

The church of Santa María la Real de Sangüesa in Navarra (Spain) is a Roman Catholic church in transition to Gothic style, in which its façade stands out. It was declared a National Monument in 1889.

The church was donated in 1131 by King Alfonso I the Battler to the order of Saint John of Jerusalem. It is a small Romanesque church with three naves. The octagonal tower is of Gothic architecture, made between the 12th-14th centuries.

The exterior is smooth and severe. On the transept of the nave rises a crenellated octagonal tower with a spire top.

What has made this church famous is the Romanesque portico that opens to the south of the building and constitutes one of the most interesting and complex works of medieval Navarrese art. The portico is rectangular in shape. It is made up of five staggered archivolts in its lower part, which contain 84 figures and which form a pointed arch that surround the tympanum and the lintel and which rest on three columns on each side with figures.

On this lower part, which ends with a narrow cornice, rise two rows of arches with double columns that house fourteen figures representing the apostles and two angels and in the center of the upper row Christ. The two rows of arches are separated by a molding and the arches are closed at the top with a frieze of leaves. In the spandrels, in addition to the religious representations, there are multiple reliefs with rich symbolism. The eardrum represents the final judgment.12

The Burgundian Leodegarius signed the image of Saint Mary that decorates the second column on the left side of the first body. Before the delay of the work, the king withdrew Leodegarius from the direction of the same, and handed it over to the experienced and veteran teacher of San Juan de la Peña, who finished

As Antarctica remains shrouded in darkness during the Southern Hemisphere winter, the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on Landsat 8 captured a new snap of the 2,240-square-mile iceberg that split off from the Antarctic Peninsula’s Larsen C ice shelf on July 10-12. The satellite imagery is a composite of Landsat 8 as it passed on July 14 and July 21 and shows that the main berg, A-68, has already lost several smaller pieces. The A-68 iceberg is being carried by currents northward out of its embayment on the Larsen C ice shelf. The latest imagery also details a group of three small, not yet released icebergs at the north end of the embayment.

Description:

One of the most intriguing hydrogen gas clouds in the entire sky is this giant object in the far southern constellation Carina (the Keel). This nebula and the associated star clusters are located only 13 degrees from the centre of the Southern Cross, which is the well-known star pattern in the constellation Crux (the Cross).

The hydrogen gas in this nebula is excited into an ionized state by the nearby star Eta Carinae, which lies at a distance of 7,500 light years from our solar system. Eta Carinae is one of the most massive, luminous stars known, with a brightness more than 5 million times that of our own Sun.

Eta is a cataclysmic variable star, which has brightened and faded remarkably over the last two centuries. In 1843 Eta briefly became the second brightest star of the sky, before fading well below naked eye visibility after 1856. In recent decades Eta has brightened noticeably, so that now it can be seen easily from a moderately dark sky location, at magnitude 4.2. For more information about this star, click here:

The final day of this years road trip & Betty Buick is winding its way south on BC's Lillooet-Lytton Highway #12.

The highway parallels the east side of the Fraser River Canyon and the delightful views are non stop.

The Hooligans have to sit and wait in the entryway while a human opens the door and releases them. The release is always quite dramatic with barking and pushing and play-biting as they race to the nearby rocks to look for chipmunks.
