Leica CL (10700), manufactured by Minolta in Japan in 1974

Leitz Summicron-C 40mm (11542), made in Germany in 1974

Kodacolor Gold 100, developed, scanned and converted to B&W because the colour shift in the emulsion had caused an awful tint that was impossible to fix (see here)

The film must have expired around eight years ago. I had left it inside the camera body and completely forgot all about it.

Most people find an expired film somewhere in their fridge, load it in their camera, use it and then develop it asap. What I did was far worse. I exposed the film and just left it sitting there. Luckily, it was always in a cool, dry place.

When I wanted to use that camera again lately, I didn't check whether there was still a film inside. Really dumb of me. Some of the old pictures are lost forever. This one was retrievable, but as stated the emulsion had already changed so much with age that the colours could no longer be salvaged.

Conversion to monochrome sort of glossed over that part, but the increase in grain and concomitant loss of definition and contrast can't be undone. It looks much older than it is. Even on my 80 year old Leica III I can produce a more "modern" look than this.

Photography is a complex and fluid medium, and its many factors are not applied in simple sequence. Rather, the process may be likened to the art of the juggler in keeping many balls in the air at one time! Ansel Adams

this film has surprised me, high contrast yes, but patient control and it performs really well. Gives classic grain for those that like an older feel to the image. and for the price its a bargain.

This 1980 Bristol VRT/ECW is seen working Coastliner route 700 at the north end of Commercial Road in Portsmouth on 14 June 1987. This bus ended up owned by Chepstow Classic Buses, who loaned it to several operators. After an accident it was used for spares by 2007 and is presumed scrapped. Southdown remained part of the NBC until 1989.
