FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Blea Tarn and the Langdale Pikes, Lake District

If someone was to ask me to name my top three viewpoints in the Lake District, blea tarn and the Langdale Pikes in the distance would be fighting for the top spot such is its beauty. The craggy nature of the Langdales bowls me over every time.

This shot was taken last week while leading a four-day workshop in the Lake District. It is made up of four vertical images that have been stitched together in Photoshop CC. I shoot with a 50mp Canon 5Ds so you can imagine just how big the overall file size is (619 MB 11319 x 9569 pixels). My PC struggled to edit it in a timely manner but it was well worth the wait and the patience needed to create the image.

I hope you all like it and please share it if you wish (as this helps keep my page visible to you all).

107 Year-Old Decaying Bridge to Nowhere

The Florida Keys U.S.A. ~ November 3rd, 2019

The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a disused bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. Originally part of the Overseas Railway, the State of Florida purchased it after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it to provide automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938. After a replacement Bahia Honda Bridge was opened in 1972, two spans of the bridge were removed to accommodate boat traffic and make the majority of the bridge inaccessible to pedestrian traffic, but the rest remain standing.

It was originally built by Henry Flagler as part of the Overseas Railroad which was completed in 1912. Flagler funded the construction of the bridge, along with the rest of the railway himself. It was purchased by the state of Florida and converted for highway use in 1938 after the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Rather than completely rebuilding the bridge after the hurricane, the existing structure was repaired and the deck for the Overseas Highway was added on top, as the existing deck inside the truss was too narrow for vehicular traffic. The bridge served as the primary mode of transport to the islands of the lower Keys, and as a primary evacuation route.

A new four-lane bridge was built in 1980, a few hundred yards north of the old bridge, replacing the old route of U.S. 1. Today, the former bridge provides a scenic overview of the area for tourists. Two of the truss spans have been removed in order to facilitate boat traffic, as the new bridge has an increased span height. The original bridge has fallen into a state of disrepair and signs have been posted on the bridge warning boat traffic to watch for falling debris, but all of the sections have remained standing (not counting the two that were removed). The easternmost section remains open to pedestrian traffic and is maintained by Bahia Honda State Park. Bahia Honda Rail Bridge ~ Spanish Harbor Key ~ Florida Keys

The rule is: they can come and visit the island during the day, but by sunset they must leave and be on their way! - Here's why: the main dock is on the western side of the island. They cannot block the sunset (from Mallory Square) that too many people from all over the world come to see and enjoy. There are usually 1-3 cruise-ships each day that arrive at sunrise and leave between 3:00-5:00 PM.

If there were 3 cruise ships along the main dock, they would block the view of the sunset from the entire island and tourists like a wall of skyscrapers! - A beautiful blue harbor morning - Nov. 3rd, 2019

Still wearing the old Wrexham & Shropshirev Grey, DB 67012 gets ready to depart platform 2 leading Set HD04 formed of 12211, 12310, 10318,,11319 + DVT 82201 working 1V96 11.33 Holyhead - Cardiff Central Transport for Wales service.

90037 'Spirit of Dagenham' flies past Milton Crossing with Grand Central set GC01 (still in VTEC colours), ex-LNER DVT 82201 and Grand Central 90026 on the rear. This was the 5Z90 1332 Wembley Inter City Depot to Widnes Transport Tech.

Originally booked for the Northampton Loop, it was put onto the mainlines at Denbigh Hall North Junction which gave me just enough time to dash across to here to see it. I believe this is the first time one of the Grand Central MK4 sets has passed here.

90026 and 90037 have both since been stored at Crewe IEMD in July 2023 and April 2023 respectively.

The stock was: 12211, 12434, 12310, 10318, 11319, 82201 (ex-BN19)
