Le château d’eau : ce réservoir en béton fournit l’eau nécessaire au refroidissement des machines. Il permet aussi l’alimentation en eau de la salle des lavabos, de l’ensemble de la distribution d’eau de la fosse et de la cité minière.
UP YPR60B departs Grand Avenue after making its pickup at the Chicago Tribune's Freedom Center on the left. Half a century ago, this was the site of the C&NW's coach yard for the Wisconsin Division commuter routes. Now it's just a spur, a runaround track, and two out-of-service yard leads.
CNW #11119 brings up the markers on Job 60B as it heads off towards the northwest side. It will be used as a shoving platform for the three-mile reverse movement down the Cragin Lead.

This spot just off of Wrightwood and Kenton was the location of a spur that led into the former W.F. Hall printing plant on Diversey. Once alleged to be the largest printing plant in the world, Hall closed its doors in 1985 and is one of the several industries on the Cragin Lead that have disappeared over the decades.
UP YPR60B runs around its train after making its pickup at the Chicago Tribune. Looks like they even got the stove working in #11119 again.
Ex-Chicago & North Western caboose 11119 is on home rails, bringing up the rear of UP's "Tribune Job" as it passes under the elevated intersection of Halsted St and Chicago Avenue, not far west of the bustling River North district.
Tulipani is a small batch pastificio in Albuquerque that offers a changing line of artisanal, fresh kinds of pasta using the best organic flour, eggs, and seasonal ingredients available. Their r recipes pay homage to tradition while drawing inspiration from local flavors and ingredients.
They have just become my new favourite place to buy fresh hand made pasta. They also cater for vegans which is so good.

After pulling a single boxcar out of the Tribune's Freedom Center on the right, UP #815 runs around its train at Grand Avenue Yard before starting up towards the northwest side to switch Alpha Baking. CNW waycar #11119 will bring up the markers as usual and will be used on the two-mile shove down the Cragin Lead.
The events of the past month have effectively signaled the end of freight operations in the former C&NW switching district around North Avenue. Last month, Blommer Chocolate abruptly closed its plant on Desplaines and Kinzie immediately ending rail service on the upper level and the last tank car arriving on the lower level last week. The Tribune is expected to start laying off workers this month with printing operations moving to Schaumburg and the Freedom Center being vacated to make way for the construction of Bally's casino. This leaves Alpha Baking as the last industry on the Harvard Sub east of Deval which means regular freight operations east of Mayfair will cease once Blommer and the Tribune close. Word on the street has it that an Elk Grove-based job will replace the 60B to switch the remaining customers on the Harvard between Mayfair and Barrington. Another chapter of Chicago railroading is about to come to an end.
UP YPR60B is about to spot Alpha Baking on the Cragin Lead, formerly the CNW Skokie Subdivision. Also a friendly reminder that dumping is a $1,000 fine by order of Streets and San.

CNW waycar #11119 brings up the markers on YPR60B which had just pulled a single boxcar from the Chicago Tribune and is now headed back towards the northwest side. The North Western had used waycars regularly on road freights well into the late 1980s, and this one has been a staple of the North Avenue job for the last five years.

UP YPR60B is tied down in front of the North Avenue yard office after dying during the previous day's afternoon rush presumably due to mechanical issues with the #815, a scene reminiscent of the pre-Covid days when YNO68 would tie up here every weekend. Bringing up the markers, as usual, is CNW waycar #11119 which is used on the shove down the Cragin Lead to reach Alpha Baking.
This yard was built during the construction of the Kennedy Expressway in the 1950s when the C&NW right-of-way was moved east of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. The original yard was located on the west side of the ROW at the site where the expressway crosses over North Avenue. The switch in the foreground was for the switchback for Morton Salt which shut down in 2015. With the last North Avenue-based job abolished in 2020 and the remaining rail-served industries in the area on the verge of eradication, it remains to be seen what will become of the yard. For now, it is mainly used for maintenance-of-way.

at the backlit cloud-scene behind us! Don't forget to always look behind you during a sunset. Sometimes the scene back there is 'better' than the one in front of you! LOL Some noise in this shot
but I still like it. It tells a story of the night. - Thanks for looking.]

UP #1430 heads down the old C&NW Low Line to grab five cars out of the Chicago Tribune with two cars and the caboose in tow.
Until the 1950s, this square block was the original coach yard and locomotive servicing area for the Northwestern's commuter operations; a roundhouse stood at the northeast corner of Halsted and Chicago Avenue. At that time, the C&NW was operating one of the most extensive passenger rail networks in Chicago.

After spotting cars for the trip to Deval, UP #1430 is about to set out SHPX #450980 at Alpha Baking on Chicago's northwest side. This was my first time shooting 68's C&NW Bay Window caboose in operation; the caboose, formerly a resident on the 6 AM Job out of Elk Grove Village, is now used for the nearly three mile shove down the Cragin Lead from Mayfair.
