Venturing out to downtown Fort Lauderdale before dawn for the first time on the morning of December 1st, 2023, the Florida East Coast Railway mainline was relatively quiet for the first hour. The only sort of bustle happening was construction work done on a new apartment building by the right of way, another skyscraper to add to the rapidly growing city skyline. Sunlight slowly began creeping into the picture right as the scanner crackled to life; a “BLF 706” calling the foreman stationed by the Brightline Fort Lauderdale Station to receive authorization past his conditional stop. “Eh, a train is a train.”, I told myself, getting set up for their roll-by.
Upon completing their stop, contacting the foreman and receiving authority to proceed south through the limits, BLF 706-01 S gets back underway with its morning revenue run to MiamiCentral from West Palm Beach following its overnight layover at the RRF, crossing over the New River on the West Main at 06:42. #BLF118, a second-order Siemens SCB-40, leads one of two BrightOrange train sets while a first-order SCB-40 trails. It seems like the crew aboard must’ve recognized me as both engineer and conductor [hi, Vinnie] throw some poses through the front window; nothing beats the joy of having your railroader friends recognize you from the cab.

Fact: I hate the feeling of wet hair on the back of my neck.
We keep losing daylight, and it's frustrating. I suppose this means come winter I'll need a light setup...
This is better on Black.
I would go as far to say that everyone that looks at this photo has this in their house.... Any guess?

Holga
Medium Format 120 film camera
This is one of my favorite film cameras. A gift from the lovely Cara Rose, my dear friend I found on Flickr in 2010 - we both lived in Lawrence and quickly became photo friends. We shot together often and took a darkroom class together. After a move to NY few years later, and then Tacoma, we continue to be long distance friends. Cara inspires me deeply with her film photography finesse. And Cara LOVES to photograph spring blossoms. This is my favorite spring tree that lives in my favorite place. I thought it was perfect for this camera portrait.
Cara sent this new Holga to me along with a roll of Ilford 120 BW film while I was on vacation at Mullett Lake. What a lovely surprise and a super sweet gift! The first roll was all Mullett Lake and then many followed in on our vacations out west and at home. I have an album on Flickr if you'd like to see more from Holga. This girl and I have bonded. We're close. I even have a roll of Portra 400 in the fridge patiently waiting to be loaded inside the heart of this special camera. Thank you, Cara. I love you.
