ERIS, the Very Large Telescope’s newest infrared eye on the sky, captured this stunning image of the inner ring of the galaxy NGC 1097. This galaxy is located 45 million light-years away from Earth, in the constellation Fornax. ERIS has captured the gaseous and dusty ring that lies at the very centre of the galaxy. The bright spots in the ring are stellar nurseries, shown in unprecedented detail. The centre of this galaxy is active, with a supermassive black hole that feeds off its surroundings.
This image has been taken through four different filters by ERIS’s state-of-the-art infrared imager, the Near Infrared Camera System — or NIX. The filters have been represented here by blue, green, red and magenta, where the last one highlights the compact regions in the ring. To put NIX’s resolution in perspective, this image shows, in detail, a portion of the sky less than 0.03% the size of the full Moon.

Volvo B8L / Enviro 400XLB number 1097 (SJ19 OXP) strolls past the daffodils in that little dip between Greenbank Crescent and Oxgangs Avenue. The light is good in the late morning and at lunchtime for this shot.

It is seen here on Edinburgh's Princes Street on service 11 to Western Harbour.

The weather turned a little wet and dreach and the end of the day. However I wanted to document this photo to show the new tri-axles venturing out onto different routes. So here we see FULL LED 1097 running on a peak hour service 41 to Cramond.

Située dans la constellation du Fourneau (Fornax), à 45 millions d'a.l. de la Terre, la galaxie spirale barrée NGC 1097 a des bras spiralés relativement faibles, entourant son cœur dans une étreinte lâche. Caché en son centre, un trou noir supermassif de 100 millions de fois la masse du Soleil consume progressivement la matière tombant dedans, illuminant puissamment grâce à l'hydrogène ionisé la zone qui l'entoure dans un anneau distinctif de 5 000 a.l. situé vers la barre centrale. La galaxie Elle est la plus brillante d'un groupe de 5 qui porte son nom : NGC 1097, NGC 1079, IC 1826, NGC 1097) et ESO 416-32 (NGC 1097B) (cf. wikipédia, site Hubble).
