The NS Erie heritage unit ended up leading a BNSF empty coal train. I heard the foamers were crawling like flies on the Creston Sub, but we had found ourselves alone at most spots.

Since leaving the mainline at Hazen, the Wabuska Turn has, for the most part, faced a steady climb, the summit of which the local had achieved before coming into view here. This is roughly the location of Hawes, a station name that long ago fell off the pages of SP's timetable. The local's next stop for industry work will be Appian, some 5 miles away.

The Wabuska Turn (LSP60) rumbles across the Carson River near Churchill, Nevada as it makes its way down the Mina Branch. The trees that hold the colors of fall block the view of near-by Fort Churchill, a former Army Fort turned state historical site that served the region from 1860-69. Of railroad interest this location is near the 'northern' junction with the SP narrow gauge (ex-Carson and Colorado) to Mound House, Nevada.

Faded but still proudly scarlet and grey, GP60 1068, ex-SSW 9669, leads the charge this day.

It is very difficult to get access to a depot these days, but back then it tended to be a lot easier in most instances.

It was, on occasion, difficult to get round Laira. On the last day of the Westerns on BR we trooped down to Laira to try and take some farewell photos but we were kept out. The taxi the took us there was a Cortina Mk 2. We had better luck on Old Oak in the early hours of the morning!

Always one for a different angle, I took this one looking up at Western Reliance.

There is a large rust area/hole on the front of 1068.

The Erie Heritage engine leading stack train 21R westbound at Penn. Also in the consist are NS 8370, 9840, 9121, and 9810. This was one of the slowest days I have ever seen on the Pittsburgh Line and had me almost thinking I was on CSX. But a heritage unit it makes it all worth it.
