I almost didn't stop. The day was bitterly cold, with a slight breeze dropping the temperature even lower. But I had been thinking about this car - a long-abandoned 1939 Pontiac - for a few days. Ten years ago I shot it head on with a wide angle lens, and I wanted to update that view with the larger, higher quality sensor, in soft light. And that afternoon, the light was soft.
A hundred metres past it, I braked, stopped, backed up, parked. You can back up on these roads, although it's advisable to look first. Every half hour or so, a car might come along. "You have to do it," I told myself.
So I dropped and rolled under the barbed wire fence, pulled the tripod over, crunched across the thin snow cover to the front end, and set up for a vertical shot. By then my eyes were tearing from the wind. I could see vague shapes through the viewfinder, but minimal detail. Sometimes that can help. If the shapes look good, you probably have a shot. The light was perfect for the shot I had envisioned, and autofocus bailed me out yet again. I stopped the aperture down to f/22 - a little diffraction doesn't matter when you need the depth of field - and somehow was able to read the exposure data through the wind-inflicted blur. I almost never use auto-exposure of any kind, preferring manual, but it helps to know what my camera thinks of all this.
And that was that. I made a few other shots, but this was the one I wanted. It was my shortest session - ever - with this wonderful old relic. I spent the next five minutes grimacing in pain as circulation came back to my numb fingers. A side effect only, not relevant to the outcome. I keep telling myself that spring is only six weeks away - an eyeblink in the greater scheme of things - and that's true. With it will come the warming earth, first grasses, wildflowers, migratory birds returning. There will be lots more to photograph. And yet, the stark, graphic intensity will dissipate somewhat; something will be lost. It's something that defines the northern prairie, in a way, and it's why I go out there time after time, into the comfortless zone, when common sense says "Stay home!"
