So the story goes that Hall was saved from its first massive fire by a rooster. Apparently the town mill (shown here) caught fire in 1316, thanks to a most likely well heated rooster crowing his fool head off, the saltstimmers (guys making salt) working nearby got the heads up the mill was on fire and got the mill fire under control. Most likely a bucket brigade with the salt water they were working with, but one has to wonder if they were not just cooking some supper with the poultry and salt water 😉

The story further goes that the town was so grateful for saving it from going up in smoke that they baked the guys a 100lb cake to celebrate. They rhrew the guy a party and paraded the cake around the fountains of Schwäbisch Hall to with the town dancing and singing not sure but sound like the mill may have been full of hemp with all the carrying on after the fire.

The reason for this story other than showing off my picture of the mill is that since the fire all the fountains of Hall run with salt water so don’t try to drink out of them or you will be rudely surprised.

Happy Window Wednesday

Some folks just don't get it when I tell them I like trains. It's most difficult to put into words. They just scratch their heads, smile, and say, "Cool." This place in eastern Quebec would make them understand. All you need to do is park by the station in Cookshire and wait. Wait all day if you have to! Soon, from the west the sound of a gentle breeze is heard. It gets louder, stronger, until that wind appears round the corner in the distance. The bells clang, the horn wails, headlight blinding, and Canadian Pacific extra 4209 east roars by you at a pace that one must witness, less describe. The station appears as if it's walls will bounce from it's foundation. The 100lb jointed rail drums a steady pace so loud your ears want to pop. Pebbles bounce. Dust and blue smoke mingle together clogging your lungs. The locomotives notch it out as they slam into the sharp curve to your right and power the tonnage up the steep grade laying ahead. No less than 80 freight cars later a dirty yellow van sails by with a hand out the window waving furiously, and that too, slams into the curve to your right and vanishes into fading light of the afternoon. Once it all settles down, the earth and your heart, like an amusement park ride, you want to get on it again. You have become a rail fan.

CPR RS18u's #'s 1855 and 1822 are being borrowed by the CDAC, Canadian American Railway, and are hustling this westbound down the grade at Racey, Quebec. The tortuous route of the Sherbrooke sub is more than evident in this shot with it's dips, curves, and 100lb jointed rail in this October 1995 view. The railroad ends at Sherbrooke at this time and sister road Quebec Southern takes over to Farnahm and down to Newport, VT. West to Montreal and north to Saint Pie is still the CPR.

VIA #6 coasts down a slight grade, on the long tangent stretch at Ryhorchuk siding. The crew and passengers are feeling fresh, having departed the trains origin point of Prince Rupert less than an hour ago. The rain, and seemingly perpetual low clouds are characteristic of BC's north coast for most of the year.

My vantage point is from the original station site at this location, once named Tyee. When the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway completed their mainline to the Pacific Ocean in 1914, Tyee was home to a water tank, station, with a 62 car siding, and short set out track. The small station also housed the telegraph operator and their family. After the Grand Trunk went bankrupt, and was nationalized in 1919, very little changed here for almost five decades. The station remained open, housing an operator for train orders, and even the water tank lasted into the 60's.

In the early 1950's the physical plant on the Skeena Subdivision received its first improvements since the line was laid four decades prior. The 85 pound rails were swapped out for the 100lb variety, and three select sidings, spaced 30 miles apart were lengthened to ~5,000 foot nominal lengths. These changes allowed for heavier, and more modern Northern and 2-10-2 type locomotives. Tyee was one of the locations that was skipped over for a longer siding, and its importance immediately diminished.

This small dot on the map of what became known as CN's "BC North Line" first saw major infrastructure upgrades during the massive works to prepare for export coal traffic, as part of the BC Northeast Coal project in 1983. The 100lb stick rail main was replaced with 136lb continuous welded rail, and the siding was extended westward with heavier rail to a 7,650 foot length. CTC signals were installed, and the depot torn down.

While these improvements to the physical plant were sufficient for the unit trains of the the 1980's and 90's, it was the opening of the Fairview Container Terminal in Prince Rupert in 2007 that once again stretched the capacity of the BCNL. The immediate success of marketing the shortest shipping route to Asia connected to the North American rail network laid the groundwork for the second phase of intermodal expansion at the port. Fairview planned to quadruple their 500,000 TEU capacity within three years of opening, which forced CN to rethink their network of 6,500 foot sidings, spaced every twenty miles. On the Skeena Sub, the sidings at Tyee, Salvus, and Exstew were extended another 6,000 feet in length. Two pairs of daily 12,000 foot long marine stack trains in each direction soon plied these rails. In 2023 the control point of Tyee was renamed Ryhorchuk in honour of Doug Ryhorchuk, CN's General Manager of BC and Alberta divisions during the period of these most recent capacity improvements.

Here it is...The MN Rollergirl Poster for their Dec 08 bout. The bout name which we came up with was Capital Punishment. This was the most fun and grandiose poster we have ever designed, printed and........executed (2 ways actually.)

-------------------------------------------

Selected from a 1966 Montgomery Wards catalog, we gave the Condemned a rollerskate, black eye and a good amount of blood. After printing the four color process image, we took this lovely lady to an indoor shooting range here in Minneapolis. There we gave her a shot (or four) from our friends AK-47. We even included a shell casing of ammo used to shoot it. YES WE REALLY SHOT EACH POSTER. And yes it was awesome...

The fun couldn't end there— we then ripped each poster at the neck and stitched it back together. That's right— off with her head! Then she received her death certificate.

This detailed replica of a Royal Aircraft Factory BE2b was mostly built under contract at the former RAF Museum facility at Cardington between 1983 and 1988. It incorporates a few original BE2a fittings and the correct original propeller, and carries the markings of the aircraft in which 2nd Lieutenant Rhodes-Moorhouse won his VC.

The BE2b was a very stable aircraft. On 26th April 1915, in the First World War, 2nd Lt William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse attacked Courtrai Railway Station, Cambrai, Northern France flying BE2b No. 687. Dropping a 100lb bomb he was fatally wounded by ground fire but managed to fly home, and was awarded the first Victoria Cross for an aerial action.

Austerity 'Spitfire' in an all out assault on the bank from the Colliery in freezing Winter conditions.

Boiler pressure would be down to about 100lb by the time Fred had got her over the crest before easing off to enter the sidings.

This piece is a Z-fold (like a map), 3-color (877 silver, 8062 silvery rose, and 2965 dark blue), and will be printed on uncoated smooth 100lb cover.

The piece needs to carry the theme (passport, travel) but without looking like it was expensive to produce (we've had some negative feedback lately that it looks like we've been spending too much money to produce printed materials). I love the detail that goes into real passports to make them secure and non-replicable, so I've borrowed similar techniques from the new passport design and incorporated them throughout this piece. The two metallic inks will serve to give it an extra sense of believeability, however, overall it still looks like a 2 or 3-color job (because it is).

There's still some copy that needs edited down (i.e. bottom middle of second spread), but other than that, this is fairly close to being finished. What are your thoughts?

Being a man or woman who struggles with their weight is what it is, frigging NORMAL!. (Not fishing for compliments here) Whether one is male or female, straight, trans, or gay we must vow to take better care of ourselves first and then we can become our best.

Regretfully the “Oxygen Mask First” lesson eluded me throughout my younger years. That didn’t make me a bad person for others, it only created havoc for myself. Thankfully as I move closer to a setting sun my true spirit is evolving and it is quite a revelation. Thank you to our sphere of special smart and supportive Flickr souls here. Turboprop regional airliner

History

Bombardier's de Havilland Dash 8 has proven to be a popular player in the regional turboprop airliner market. De Havilland Canada began development of the Dash 8 in the late 1970s in response to what it saw as a considerable market demand for a new generation 30 to 40 seat commuter airliner. The first flight of the first of two preproduction aircraft was on June 20 1983, while Canadian certification was awarded on September 28 1984. The first customer delivery was to norOntair of Canada on October 23 1984. Like the Dash 7, the Dash 8 features a high mounted wing and Ttail, and has an advanced flight control system and large full length trailing edge flaps. Power meanwhile is supplied by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW120 series (originally designated PT7A) turboprops. Initial Dash 8 production was of the Series 100, which was followed by the Series 100A in 1990. The 100A introduced a revised interior with extra headroom and PW120A turboprops. The Series 100B was offered from 1992 with more powerful PW121s for better climb and airfield performance. Production since switched to the improved performance Dash 8-200. Announced in 1992 and delivered from April 1995 the -200 features more powerful PW123C engines which give a 56km/h (30kt) increase in cruising speed, as well as greater commonality with the stretched Dash 8300. The 200B derivative has PW123Bs for better hot and high performance. From the second quarter of 1996 all Dash 8s delivered have been fitted with a computer controlled noise and vibration suppression system (or NVS). To reflect this the designation was changed to Dash 8Q (Q for `quiet'). In 1998 that was changed again to Dash 8 Q200 when a new interior was introduced.

Powerplants

100 - Two 1490kW (2000shp) Pratt & Whitney Canada PW120A turboprops driving four blade constant speed Hamilton Standard propellers. 100B - Two 1605kW (2150shp) PW121As. 200 - Two 1605kW (2150shp) PW123Cs in 200A, or two PW123Ds in 200B.

Turboprop regional airliner

History

With the success of the Dash 8-100 series, a stretched version with greater capacity was a logical development. De Havilland Canada (now part of Bombardier) launched full scale development of a 50 seat stretched version of its Dash 8 regional airliner during 1986, approximately two years after the standard fuselage length aircraft had entered service. The first series 300 aircraft was in fact the prototype Dash 8 converted to the new length, and it flew for the first time in its new configuration on May 15 1987. Flight testing culminated in the awarding of Canadian certification in February 1989, with the first delivery to Time Air following late that same month. US certification was awarded in June 1989. The stretch comprises fuselage plugs forward and aft of the wing, increasing length by 3.43m (11ft 3in). In addition, the wings are greater in span. The fuselage stretch increases typical seating capacity to 50 (at 81cm/32in pitch), or for up to 56 (at 74cm/29in pitch). Other changes compared with the Dash 8-100 were minor, but included a larger, repositioned galley, larger toilet, additional wardrobe, dual air conditioning packs, a new galley service door and optional APU. The Dash 8-300 has been offered in a number of variants. The standard 300 was followed in 1990 by the 300A which introduced optional higher gross weights, interior improvements (as on the Dash 8-100A), and standard PW123A engines (with PW123Bs optional). The 300B was introduced in 1992 and has 1865kW (2500shp) PW123Bs as standard, as is the optional high gross weight of the 300A. The 300E has 1775kW (2380shp) PW123Es rated to 40 degrees, thus improving hot and high performance. Like the Dash 8Q-200, all Dash 8-300s built since the second quarter of 1996 have been fitted with a computer controlled noise and vibration suppression system (or NVS) and so from then all models were designated Dash 8Q-300s. In 1998 the aircraft was again renamed, this time to Dash 8-Q300 when a new interior was also introduced.

Powerplants

300A - Two 1775kW (2380shp) Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123A turboprops driving four blade Hamilton Standard propellers. 300B - Two 1865kW (2500shp) PW123Bs.

Performance

300 - Max cruising speed 532km/h (287kt). Initial rate of climb 1800ft/min. Service ceiling 25,000ft. Range with full passenger load and reserves 1538km (830nm), with 2720kg (6000lb) payload 1612km (870nm). 300B - Max cruising speed 528km/h (285kt). Range with 50 passengers 1625km (878nm), with 50 passengers and auxiliary fuel 2275km (1228nm).

Weights

300 - Operating empty 11,657kg (25,700lb), standard max takeoff 18,642kg (41,100lb). 300B - Operating empty 11,719kg (25,836lb), max takeoff 19,505kg (43,000lb).

Dimensions

Wing span 27.43m (90ft 0in), length 25.68m (84ft 3in), height 7.49m (24ft 7in). Wing area 56.2m2 (605sq ft).

Capacity

Flightcrew of two. Standard single class seating for 50 passengers at four abreast and 81cm (32in) pitch.

Production

Total orders for Dash 8-300s stood at over 136 by late 1998, of which 128 were in service.

Quarry Bank Mill

The mill is situated next to the River Bollin in the village of Styal. It was founded by Samuel Greg in 1784 for the spinning of cotton, by the time of his retirement in 1832, it was the largest cotton spinning business in the United Kingdom. Originally powered by a water wheel, in the 19th century, this was supplemented by steam engines as the water from the river was often too low during the summer months.

This is the boiler used to create the steam to power the machinery. The boiler was made at the The Oldham Wellington Boiler Works in Stockport in 1880.

Advertised as the sole boiler makers in Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire with the Mirfin and Neild’s patent combustion chambered boilers, and Holdens patent assisted draught furnace and a smoke consumer, the boilers were ‘always ready for delivery’. The standard steam boiler came with 100lb working pressure. The telegraphic address should you require one is “Boilers” Oldham, and the telephone No. 16 Oldham.

From working out to working it all out; I’m up for the challenge. I have lost 50lbs now since January 1st after learning how to balance the estrogen load that is thankfully augmenting my mind, body, and spirit. I stopped by one of my favorite golf courses today in this dress and found a nice people watching bench. It was a beautiful breezy day and so much fun spying on the guys check in and out of the club at the bag drop. (I took some pics) I didn’t see anyone I knew but I seriously doubt they would recognize me at a distance. Maybe after a nice hug and kiss they would figure it out. 😘 ChaChaChanges!!! ☮️💜

Taking a forgiving B&W dressing room breather. Had a hard time with “holiday sizing” today. Punting for now and focusing on a nice 20 month HRT update and a gorgeous New Years Eve dress for 2020!!!

Coming to an office near you. Anyone hiring?

An Entry from Philip Vickers Fithian Journal concerning Mr. Carters Grist Mill at Nomini Hall, Tuesday, 8 March 1774. Since, Nomini Hall no longer exists I am using a photograph taken of the Stratford Hall grist mill.

“I rose by six--the morning fine. Breakfasted at nine. At twelve I walked, to the mill together with Mr & Mrs Carter; Miss Prissy & Nancy, to see them bake Biscuit, & pack flour; here too I had a Forfeit for kneeding biscuit. The Colonel shewed me and explain'd the Pan of his Mill; his Canals; Waste-gates; Toll Mill, Merchant Mill: &c. The tide flows quite to the Mill & is navigable with Canoes & Flats--He told me that his Wastgate as it stands alone cost him 95£.--And that nothing less than 5000£ Capital can continue the works & keep them supplied. The Ovens bake 100lb of Flour at a Heating; there are in the Bake-house two Ovens. Dined half after two. . .“ page 74
