Ljótipollur a la particularité de se situer dans un maar, un cratère volcanique d'explosion, tout comme Kerið dans le sud de l'Islande ou encore Viti dans la région de Myvatn. Ce maar a été créé en 1477 lors d'une éruption volcanique et s'est petit à petit rempli d'eauLe cratère mesure 1,5 kilomètre de diamètre et les couleurs rouges de ses flancs avec des teintes de vert contrastent magnifiquement avec le bleu sombre du lac qu'il contient. En arrivant au sommet du cratère, l'intérêt est bien sûr d'en faire le tour à pied pour pouvoir voir le cratère sous tous les angles. Il faut compter 45 minutes pour en faire le tour à pied. En fonction de l'endroit, de la lumière et de l'heure dans la journée, les flancs rouges se reflètent sur le lac ce qui est du plus bel effet. Le rouge intense de ses flancs provient de dépôts de minerais de fer.
Pour s'y rendre il faut laisser son véhicule et emprunter le chemin qui grimpe jusqu'au cratère. La montée ne prend que 30 minutes à pied jusqu'au lac et n'est pas très compliquée.
Je n'ai pas retrouvé les autres photos de ce lac donc nous n'avons pas fait le tour (prévu pour d'autres cratères)…..sans doute supprimées lors du tri(sévère) fait au retour.

Every December, I have desk calendars make with my dog photos I shot. I give my family, friends and my neighbors who love my dog it for season's greeting gift.
I took from the side of the desk calendar. The part shown in the photo of it is 1.5 inches

What does it even mean to be 1.5 billion years old? Carbon dating has confirmed the rocks at Cameron Falls to be Precambrian, at that age. To think of that much time is just mind blowing. Can you imagine finding some kind of fossilized life in the stones? How incredible would that be?!

A large raptor around 55-70 cms tall and weighing around 1.5 - 2.4 kg and found throughout the year in India. They are probably the smallest of the 9 species of vultures found in India. The birds are very distinctive and easily recognizable unlike some of the other vultures which are confusing to id.
This one is an adult with the full white plumage and yellowish face and beak. Immatures tend to be totally brown with a greyish face. The birds are often seen around carcass dumpyards or in the deserts where dead cattle / animals are lying rotten. In our Rajasthan trip last week, we sighted 100+ of them all around the state - they are quite common there. In fact, Rajasthan has 7 of the 9 vultures found in India. Like most vultures, this is quite shy of people, but many a time, we found very close to the nomad settlements perched on the poles or walking around on the ground.

I knew this guy was pursuing the doe that had just come crashing by me to avoid him. He was hot on her pheromone trail, but paused just long enough to engage his eyes with mine before continuing the chase. I love being in wild places! Warning! This is the time of year bucks let their guards down as they crazily follow her scent. There are 1.5 million deer/vehicle collisions per year in the US, with 150 human deaths and 1.1 billion dollars in damage. Most collisions happen during the fall.
This waterfall adorns the Yellow Dog River northwest of Marquette in Michigan's upper peninsula not far from Lake Superior, an area rich in forests and waterfalls.
This is an older image that I have been sitting on. I'm trying not to burn through more recent captures - it's a long winter.
