Common Whitethroat - Sylvia communis

The common whitethroat (Sylvia communis) is a common and widespread typical warbler which breeds throughout Europe and across much of temperate western Asia. This small passerine bird is strongly migratory, and winters in tropical Africa, Arabia, and Pakistan.

This is one of several Sylvia species that has distinct male and female plumages. Both sexes are mainly brown above and buff below, with chestnut fringes to the secondary remiges. The adult male has a grey head and a white throat. The female lacks the grey head, and the throat is duller.

This species may appear to be closely related to the lesser whitethroat, the species having evolved only during the end of the last ice age similar to the willow warbler and chiffchaffs. However, researchers found the presence of a white throat is an unreliable morphological marker for relationships in Sylvia, and the greater and lesser whitethroats are not closely related.

This is a bird of open country and cultivation, with bushes for nesting. The nest is built in low shrub or brambles, and 3–7 eggs are laid. Like most warblers, it is insectivorous, but will also eat berries and other soft fruit.

Finally off the mark for my 100x. I changed my ‘x’ because my original choice of square format felt too restrictive, ironic then that my first photo under my new Pot Luck theme is ....... square :-)))

My daughter has drawn up a list of themes and I am choosing one at random by selecting a number. Done this way I won’t get to see the complete list so each choice is going to be a surprise.

Inspired by Glass is the first random choice and this beautiful blue bud vase was a Christmas present.

Manchmal funktionieren selbst komplexe Techniken schon beim ersten Versuch. Schön und gut, doch was nun?

Finally got started!

Been waiting for a camera repair since Nov 22nd, last week I was offered a full refund and have purchased a replacement, hooray! By the way nothing to do with Nikon, the poor service came from the store I originally purchased from.

My 'x' is joy, things, people, places, anything that makes me happy and gives an escape from the day to day mundanity.

Today's pic is the result of a beautiful sunny morning, an hour with the camera in hand and a brief moment when the wind flipped this leaf up from the muddy path and the light did the rest.

These small, long-horned beetles are usually associated with thistles. Frequent in "weedy" places, they often make small flights when frightened, alighting on any plant. In this case on Silene vulgaris.

As some of you know we bought a "doer upper" (a late 1860s Victorian Semi) in June last year, and we are just about to start the renovation and building works. Part of the 365 (and all my 100) will be documenting this and probably hits the weekly theme of Commitment!

A slight loo disaster after Christmas has ended up with us having to remove the toilet and floor in the downstairs bathroom which was used by the previous and elderly owner who lived downstairs. The loo was propped on bits of (we discovered) rotten wood - see rectangular hole which was simply cut into the floor. The waste pipe had also been cut through the floor into the open sewer (see capping with plastic bag!).

The upside is that we didn't know these original victorian tiles were underneath a carpet and three layers of vinyl. We now have to work out a way to keep and restore them, as this area is becoming the walk in larder of a more open plan kitchen. And we have found another layer of white tiling behind the green.

The downside is that this room is now unusable, leaving us with one remaining bathroom toilet for 5 adults, including the always showering young people.

For my 100 Flowers project - 2025

A plant that is endemic to Western Australia. We are seeing more such plants in gardens around our area.

I have been organizing photos on the Google Drive for months now. I had some albums before, but took it to the next level last September when I started sorting everything into more specific albums, based on lens used or flower type, for example. It is a very slow process as some of the older images of flowers I took go back to 2003. However, it is totally paying off as it is much easier now to find pictures I am thinking of. Moreover, I unearthed some gems I did not even remember I had like this orchid image. It was taken at the Orchid Showcase organized by the San Diego Orchid Society. It was truly a feast for the eyes. However, it was held in the windowless hall and the lighting was atrocious, hence the ISO of 3200. I took lots of pictures, but most of them were just for memory and not to be shared as the noise level in the pictures was high. However, looking now at this image I feel that in this particular case the high ISO caused noise has actually been a plus and resulted in an image that looks like a vintage illustration, botanical print or a postcard.

Meet Tayyab Parvez, a 22 year old man from Southampton, UK. He was waiting to have his haircut and very kindly allowed me to talk to him and take his portrait.

Tayyab was born in Southampton and has lived here all of his life. He works as a security guard, usually in large supermarkets, but it could be any venue in which he is required.

From my own experience in similar roles, Tayyab seems to me to possess the "The Right Stuff" for such a job. He is articulate, easy to talk to and has a quick sense of humour, exactly the traits that allow someone in his position to negotiate rather having to resort to force.

I hope I have the good fortune to meet him again.

This is the last mult-panel panorama I have to share. Maybe I'll take more at some point. They're fun, but quite a time-suck.

This is a 4-panel version of a 3-panel pano I did at the same time. This one has no edits between photos.

It's so strange to see the two shiprocks together though. In real life you don't quite get this view.

All I can really say about these is that they're harder than they look. Not much harder though. With a little pre-thought and some planning, you can pull it off.

I took this picture with OM-1 and Zuiko 135mm f3.5. I developed Acros pushing to 200 with HC-110, 1:100 dilution with 45 minutes. (These days I always follow this recipe.)

I have spent four years with flickr, and in my first and second years, I often got comments and advices from my Mexican flickr friend Boris de Swan. To my regret I had no contact with him these days, and just the other day I saw a sad news that I can no more hear from him:

I love his photos, especially the portraits. This is one of his portrait works:

I miss him a lot, but his photos will keep telling me precious things on photography.
