Remarks: Tuesday morning December 29th, 2020 Amtrak P42DC number 161 leads the California Zephyr train number 5 seen here climbing to tunnel 1 on the Moffat Subdivision. 15 minutes earlier this entire scene was blanketed in a thick fog; the remnants of the previous nights snow event. Light snow fell over most of the Front Range overnight leaving a light coating of snow just enough for a winter scene worth capturing.

A major hub between lines 1, 12 and 13. This was taken in the connecting tunnel between the lines 12, 13 section and the line 1 section of that station.

The Cross Bay Link is a 1.8 km bridge that connects the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate and LOHAS Park areas with the Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel. The bridge consists of a road (a dual two-lane carriageway), pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes. This will help to solve the great demands on traffic in the region.

Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel and Cross Bay Link will be opened on 11 December 2022 at 08:00am.

A view inside the 213 metre long tunnel that gives access to the Durie Hill elevator in Wanganui.

Built in 1919, The Durie Hill Elevator is New Zealand’s only public transport elevator and is still used on a daily basis by locals and visitors.

Access is through a long pedestrian tunnel, or an adit to be more precise – this tunnel has no exit point. You’ll be welcomed aboard the elevator for the 66-metre ride to the top of the hill. The ride costs $2 (each way) for adults, $1 for children and eftpos is available. The elevator operates 8am-6pm weekdays, 10am-5pm weekends and public holidays and is open every day except Christmas day.

The construction of the Durie Hill Underground Elevator enabled the development of the Durie Hill Garden Suburb in 1920. This suburb was planned by the architect Samuel Hurst Seager and is considered to be the first modern New Zealand suburb. The elevator continued to be operated by the company until 1 June 1942 when control passed to the Council, which continues to own and maintain the complex today.

The Thistle Tunnels are twin bores under Billies Mountain in Utah, constructed by Morrison-Knudsen after a massive mudslide buried the town of Thistle in floodwater and closed the Rio Grande main line in 1983.

Situated at the base of the Coromandel Range, the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi, giving access to impressive remains from the mining and railway eras.

This walkway features historic railway remains in a stunning natural gorge setting, including two steel truss bridges and a 1 km rail tunnel, and provide access to the relics of historic gold mining. The walkway follows the railway line through the gorge and then opens out alongside the Ohinemuri River, passing through the huge Victoria Battery complex and terminating at the Waikino Station where a cafe and train rides can be investigated.

The view from one of the tunnel windows in Zion National Park, Utah. The tunnel is 1.1 miles long (1.8 km) and has two huge windows and stopping is not allowed. The tunnel is rounded so large vehicles have to drive down the middle so opposing traffic is stopped. I was first ahead of a bus and when I got the go sign I went hard and fast to be able to stop and take a picture from the tunnel window. I stopped and got out of the car, I fired off a few frames and got back in the car just as the bus was catching up.

We went to the Hawk Hill, located in the Marin Headlands just north of San Francisco's Golden Gate. Waiting for sunset and moonrise, we lingered around at the top. When it was time for moonrise we walked through the tunnel. As if planned, the sun aligned perfectly, casting a long shadow on passerby.

Grey-crowned Babbler

Scientific Name: Pomatostomus temporalis

Description: The Grey-crowned Babbler is the largest of Australia's four babbler species. It is dark brown-grey above, with a distinctive grey crown stripe and a dark face mask that contrasts with a white eyebrow. The chin and throat are white, running into a pale grey lower breast. It has a long, curved bill, short rounded wings with cinnamon brown wing patches and a long tail tipped white. The eye is pale yellow in adults. There is a darker-coloured subspecies, rubeculus, in north-western Australia (often called the Red-breasted Babbler), that has a rufous lower breast and darker crown stripe. The Grey-crowned Babbler is a noisy and gregarious bird, usually found in small groups of four to twelve, and is often seen on the ground or in low trees. It is sometimes called the Yahoo, after one of its calls.

Similar species: The Grey-crowned Babbler lacks the dark crown of other babblers and has a yellow rather than a dark eye.

Distribution: The Grey-crowned Babbler is widespread throughout north-western, northern, central and eastern Australia. It is also found in Papua New Guinea.

Habitat: The Grey-crowned Babbler is found in open forests and woodlands, favouring inland plains with an open shrub layer, little ground cover and plenty of fallen timber and leaf litter. May be seen along roadsides and around farms. In south-east Melbourne, small populations survive on golf courses.

Seasonal movements: Sedentary.

Feeding: Grey-crowned Babblers feed on insects and other invertebrates and sometimes eat seeds. They forage in groups of two to fifteen birds on the ground among leaf litter, around fallen trees and from the bark of shrubs and trees (they tend to use trees more than other babblers).

Breeding: Grey-crowned Babblers live and breed in co-operative territorial groups of two to fifteen birds (usually four to twelve). Groups normally consist of a primary breeding pair along with several non-breeding birds (sometimes groups may contain two breeding pairs or two females that both breed). Most members of the group help to build nests, with the primary female contributing the most effort. Two types of nest are built: roost-nests (usually larger and used by the whole group) and brood-nests (for the breeding females), and often old nest sites are renovated and re-used from year to year. The large domed nests are placed in a tree fork 4 m - 7 m high and are made of thick sticks with projections that make a hood and landing platform for the entrance tunnel. The nest chamber is lined with soft grass, bark, wool and feathers. The brooding female (sometimes more than one) is fed by the other group members and all help to feed the nestlings. Larger groups tend to raise more young, and two broods are usually raised per season.

Calls: Loud scolding and chattering calls: 'wee-oo'. Also distinctive 'ya-hoo' duet by breeding female ('yah') and male ('ahoo') repeated six to eight times.

Minimum Size: 25cm

Maximum Size: 29cm

Average size: 27cm

Average weight: 81g

Breeding season: July to February

Clutch Size: Usually two to three, up to five if more than one female.

Incubation: 23 days

Nestling Period: 23 days

After Union Pacific began operation of the Moffat Tunnel line in the wake of the Southern Pacific merger, there was a brief era when UP assigned Rio Grande’s GP60s to the Ski Train. On the morning of March 21, 1997, the Rio Grande Ski Train approaches Tunnel 1 east of Plainview, Colorado, led by matching GP60s, Nos. 3155 and 3156.

In the spring of 1998, BNSF daylighted Sunset Tunnel, also known as the 1,928-foot Tunnel 2 between Guernsey and Wendover, Wyoming. The wood-lined tunnel on this 9-mile segment of railroad was originally built by the CB&Q in 1915 and was one of three tunnels on the line. Besides the massive amount of work to remove the tunnel, BNSF also had to stabilize the soft earthen boundaries of the excavation with a concrete mixture sprayed to the sides of the cut, giving the scenery a strange new look. It also gave the railroad a lengthened Stokes siding to the east. On June 21, 2019, an eastbound BNSF coal train heads through the huge cut in a view from Skyline Drive overpass located in Guernsey State Park.

A sculpture by the entrance of the '3rd Tunnel' in the South Korean DMZ. It represents the reunification of South & North Korea.

We went down the tunnel although photography was not permitted. It's a 1.7km walk, first down a steep slope and then with a low roof (helmets provided) to eventually look through windows in concrete barriers into the north. The tunnels were discovered in 1978 and were to enable North Korea to invade The South. Ironically, the hard work of the potential invaders is now a big tourist draw for visitors to the DMZ including a gift shop.

2006 Vietnam

Friendly people and great food await travelers to this vibrant country.

Vietnam is a Southeast Asian country known for its beaches, rivers, Buddhist pagodas and bustling cities. Hanoi, the capital, pays homage to the nation’s iconic Communist-era leader, Ho Chi Minh, via a huge marble mausoleum. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) has French colonial landmarks, plus Vietnamese War history museums and the Củ Chi tunnels, used by Viet Cong soldiers.

...... by the collapse of the tunnel

The Somosierra tunnel is a railway tunnel drilled under Somosierra, in the Central system. It was used by the railroad that links Madrid and Burgos until a landslide in March 2011 left a roadworks machine trapped inside. It was completed in 1933. It is also known as Somosierra tunnel to the A-1 tunnel, opened in 1992.

One of the first lines was that of the Madrid-Burgos Directo, which began to be built in 1928, but it was not finished until 1966, being inaugurated in 1968. In 2011 it suffered a collapse after its partial detachment, remaining closed today. In the summer of 2018, Renfe plugged the two entrances of the tunnel with a small wall, to prevent people from accessing it.

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal is 20 miles long and runs from Ashton-under-Lyne to Huddersfield connecting the Ashton Canal in the West to the Huddersfield Broad (Sir John Ramsden’s Canal) in the East.

Work building the Canal commenced in 1794 and though it was largely completed some five years later, the construction of 3.1 miles of Standedge Tunnel took a further eleven years. Passing under the Pennines between Diggle and Marsden, the Tunnel was, and remains today, the longest, highest (above sea level) and deepest (underground) canal tunnel in Britain. It also boasts the oldest navigable cast iron aqueduct in the country at Stalybridge, constructed by the renowned engineer, Benjamin Outram in 1801.

The Canal was officially opened for through navigation on the 4th April 1811.
