During my parents' annual visit, I took them to do some sightseeing in downtown Austin on a Friday afternoon. We visited several historic sites in Brush Square Park, including the O. Henry Museum (409 E. 5th St.). (The first photo in this series provides some background on this legendary writer and his former Austin home.) Here, you can see a view of one of the home's rooms, which is set up as a bedroom.
The Brush Square Museums website includes details on a few of the objects displayed throughout the house, including the dresser, lamp, hat, and shaving set shown here:
Dresser
Object ID: 1936.21.01
O. Henry Museum Collection
Walnut dresser with attached mirror. Mirror has pediment top with triangular sides and a half-circle top with a scallop design in the center. The sides of the mirror are curvilinear. Below the mirror, the dresser has three separate surfaces: one low wooden center surface, and two raised marble topped surfaces on either side of the center surface. Below each marble topped surface is a drawer with a plain, round, wooden handle. Below the two top drawers are two long drawers that span the width of the dresser. On either side of each drawer is a wooden teardrop pull attached to a brass Eastlake rosette, and in the top center of each drawer is a keyhole.
In the O. Henry Museum Inventory notebook (1935-1951), p.14, the curator (Cornelia Smith) wrote next to entries for a dresser and washstand: "MRS. ROACH--USED BY O. HENRY FAMILY." The donor is not listed, so the provenance of these objects are unclear. Mrs. Roach (Martha Roach) died in 1929, and her husband P.G. Roach died in 1930. However, the dresser is of the same style as the bed the belonged to P.G. and Martha Roach (1934.36.01).
Table Lamp
Object ID: 1934.05.01
O. Henry Museum Collection
Rochester lamp with white glass shade, glass chimney, and pedestal base. Wick adjustment knob at base. Embossed paisley design on tank. Filler cap on tank.
Hat
Object ID: 1968.03.01
O. Henry Museum Collection
Fedora; brown felt and brown headband. Made by Young Bros. The initials ''S.P.'' are on the inside of the band.
Around 1906, O. Henry left this hat at a stag party hosted author by Roy Norton, when he exchanged it with the best hat laying among the guests' belongings. Norton later gave the hat to a friend, Beatrice M.C. Wood, who donated the hat to the museum in 1968.
Shaving Mug
Object ID: 1935.05.01a
O. Henry Museum Collection
White, plain shaving mug with handle. Maker's mark on bottom; the words ''ROYAL CHINA INTERNATIONAL'' surround a crown.
Early records indicate that the mug came from the Houston barbershop that O. Henry frequented on the corner of Fannin and Commerce Streets. O. Henry's barber was the donor, James French. James Wilson owned the barbershop.
Shaving Mug
Object ID: 1935.05.01b
O. Henry Museum Collection
Shaving brush with dark brown ceramic ferrule and wooden handle. Markings at end of wooden handle: ''10'' and ''PA''.
