STS066-117-034 Sado Island, Japan November 1994

The paralleling, northeast-southwest aligned mountains of Sado Island are connected in the middle by a plain. The island is separated from the west coast of Honshu Island by 19 miles (30 km). A small section of the Echigo Plain and a small coastal mountain (darker feature) located south of the city of Niigata are visible in the upper left corner of the image. Administratively Sado Island is part of Niigata prefecture. Notice that the sun’s reflection off the water’s surface (a phenomenon known as sunglint or sun glitter) has created a light colored image. The sunglint does identify a dark area north of the island, thereby providing a clue as to the direction of the water flow or current around Sado Island (in this case flowing from south to north), creating an island wake along the north side of the island.

STS129-S-034 (16 Nov. 2009) --- Space Shuttle Atlantis and its six-member STS-129 crew head toward Earth orbit and rendezvous with the International Space Station. Liftoff was on time at 2:28 p.m. (EST) on Nov. 16, 2009 from launch pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Onboard are astronauts Charles O. Hobaugh, commander; Barry E. Wilmore, pilot; along with Leland Melvin, Mike Foreman, Robert L. Satcher Jr. and Randy Bresnik, all mission specialists. Atlantis will deliver two Express Logistics Carriers to the station, the largest of the shuttle's cargo carriers, containing 15 spare pieces of equipment including two gyroscopes, two nitrogen tank assemblies, two pump modules, an ammonia tank assembly and a spare latching end effector for the station's robotic arm. Atlantis will return to Earth a station crew member, Nicole Stott, who has spent more than two months aboard the orbiting laboratory. STS-129 is slated to be the final space shuttle Expedition crew rotation flight.

STS047-077-034 Unimak Island, Alaska, U.S.A. September 1992

Seen in this southwest-looking, low-oblique photograph is Unimak Island, Alaska, the largest island in the Aleutian chain. The major volcano on the island (snow-capped peak at the center of the photograph), Shishaldin, rises approximately 9400 feet (2860 meters) and has been active during the last 175 years, with several eruptions occurring recently. The volcano is known locally as "Smoking Moses." At the southwestern end of the island is the snow-capped Pogromni Volcano. The blue lake situated in a large volcanic caldera, which can be seen midway between the Pogromni and Shishaldin volcanoes, is the result of a now extinct volcano that collapsed.

When you get to the end of another day and realise 2 things.. 1) you forgot to take a photo today, and 2) you both thought that the other person fed the dog dinner – until you see him looking at you like this!!
