A Black Turnstone (winter plumage) shot from earlier this year.
The flock came so close as I partially knelt quietly on the beach, that I was able to take several detailed portraits before they decided they were close enough, and moved away to feed elsewhere.

Canadian Goose.
Two sizes of Canadian Geese exist. A small 22 to 26 inch and a large 35-45 inch version. They have a brownish body with a black head, long blackneck and which cheeck patch. The smaller version has a shorter neck and lacks the cheeck patch.
They inhabit lakes, bays, rivers and marshes. They often feed in open grasslands and stubble fields.
They range from Alaska each to Baffin Island and south to California, Illinoise and Massachusetts. They winter south to northern Mexico and the Gulf Coast. Widespread as a semi-domesticated bird in city parks and on reservoirs.

Leider ist der versprochene Sonnenschein ausgeblieben und so war meine zweite Radtour in diesem Jahr eine frische Angelegenheit.
In 2024 vond een grote ombouw plaats in Leeuwarden. Gedurende een, in totaal, 39-daagse buitendienststelling werd de gehele lay-out van het emplacement aangepast. Er kwamen servicesporen met serviceperrons, er werden wissel gesaneerd en er werd bovenleiding bijgebouwd.
Ik was betrokken bij dit klusje en was gedurende de uitvoering meerdere keren aanwezig in het hoge noorden. Uiteraard nam ik mijn camera mee; werktreinen zijn, zeker op andere locaties dan Bruchem of de vrije baan, ook interessant om op de foto te zetten.
Op 1 juni kon ik zo één van de oude ballasttrein van spoorbouw op de foto zetten. Terwijl ik over het emplacement banjerde, kwam ook Struktons 303001 gedag zeggen. Met de forse sleep Klmos'en zien we de dieselloc op de werkput staan.
*Het spoor was ten tijde van deze foto buitendienst.

Staverton Park and The Thicks, Wantisden is an 80.8 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Butley in Suffolk. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and a Special Area of Conservation. It is in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This ancient park is woodland on sandy soil, with mature pollarded oaks, while The Thicks is a dense wood with hollies, some of them thought to be the largest in Britain. There is a rich lichen flora, and invertebrates include rare species.
The site is private land but a public footpath goes through it.
