A day of rain.

And a trip to Newcastle.

Hmmmm, Newcastle.

We woke up at half seven, outside it was overcast with the promise of much rain through the day. We planned to go to Hexham to catch the train into the city, wander round, have lunch, take shots and come back. And it still sounded a good idea in the morning. So, after breakfast, we gathered our stuff, our new waterproof jackets and walking boots, packed the car and set off down the valley to Hexham.

There is an even more local station nearer the cottage, but only has a two-hourly service through the day. A 15 minute drive to Hexham opens the possibility of half hourly trains, if we got bored in the city.

Two pounds to park the car all day outside the station, seven quid for a return ticket. A cheap day it seemed.

We had timed it just right, and 5 minutes after arriving, our train, a class 156, pulled up and we all got on for the half hour trundle into town. The line runs beside the river Tyne, and is very picturesque, even from a rattly diesel DMU.

We pulled into Newcastle, over Stephenson’s high level bridge, with glorious views over the river and city. It had just begun to rain, but we were prepared.

Outside the station, we looked up the wide street in front, and I saw a memorial, which should mean there was a square, maybe the centre of the city, so we set off, dodging shoppers and waiting bus passengers. However, we were thirsty. And hungry. And seeing an Italian ice cream parlour, we go inside to have breakfast.

I order sausage roll and a coffee: Jools has quiche. And a coffee. Now, that we did not specify what kind of coffee we wanted should have meant we got a cup of filter. Or so we thought. But what we did get was a cup of milky coffee, the kind that my parents used to drink, made with almost all hot milk, and horrible.

I tried to tell myself this was some kind of retro food experience, but my main thought was to drink it as soon as possible before a skin formed on the top, which would have made me retch.

Further up the street, we saw a sign saying ‘central arcade’; we thought it looked interesting and went in. Just as well we did, as inside it was decorated with splendid tiles, in a fine art deco fashion. In admiring them, we caught the attention of a woman, who engaged us in conversation. Turns out she was a guide, and for four pounds each would take us on a 90 minute tour round the city.

We were told of the history of the Arcade before walking to the indoor market and then down the wide street past the Theatre Royal.

In the market is the site of the first ever Marks and Spencer store, or market stall, which is still going, selling end of line items.

Where all the TRL magic happens. *retch*

I have added this image in response to another picture of Scytodes thoracica, which also quoted my poem. To read more of my spider poems, see delta-intkey.com/britsp/www/poems.htm

SCYTODES THORACICA

Abdomen a stretched bladder, leopard spotted

And ponderous, with legs too long, you stalk

The sleeping fly, with only six eyes, in darkness.

Bristles at your jaundiced joints will feel

The hum of her dormancy, sense

The inrush of air through spiracles at rest.

You do not rush, or even touch her yet,

But retch poison web from your open mouth,

A zigzag puke of silk, to stick her to the floor.

The fly wings strum, the feet drum ineffectually,

And Scytodes, tentative spitting spider, bites her,

Apologetically, on one leg. Waits for death,

And then, like a tender embalmer, unstitches

The silk shroud, bears her on the bier of her wings,

Whispers her orisons, while other spiders sleep.

Source material: Scytodes thoracica, the spitting spider, is nocturnal, and ranges widely at night in search of sleeping insects. It has poor vision, and only six eyes, but senses the presence of its prey through bristles on its legs. The cephalothorax of Scytodes is uniquely enlarged, since it has to house additional silk glands, which normal spiders retain in the abdomen only. When the spider wishes to make a kill, it does so by standing at a distance, and spitting zigzags of poisonous, gummy web over its victim, sticking it to the ground. Only then does the spider venture closer to the prey, delivering the death bite. When the prey has expired, the spider frees its body from the web, and carries it off, to suck it dry at leisure. The spider’s appearance is very distinctive, with its yellowish body covered with dark blotches, its domed cephalothorax, and absurdly long legs. The small genus occurs on all continents except Antarctica.

A woman was struggling drinking water and kept retching. I think she was trying to get some meds down and the gag reflex didn't want to.

Dispatched to Geonosis. Those bugs were vile, ugly and discussing. They were like killing an ant. Effortless, and no pity for their death. But enough about those retched 'rebels'.

Day one. We encountered umpteen rebel soldiers. Shit load they did. It was like they were commanded to just look at us when we fired.. Maybe th.. Maybe they were ordered to do that so we would not fight at our best, then surprise us when our guard is down.. Interesting strategy..

We didn't see hardly any Natives. They must have been hiding, for they might have known the terror we shall enthrall them with. Either that, or our eye sight strength has been depleted from the heart melting, neck burning sun. I swear my amour is hot enough to cook an egg right now!

Ba~~~~~~ Sorry, Qurtz just bumped into me. Qurtz says he doesn't want to wright, because he says it's a sign of madness writing to your self. "if your the one who wrote it, and your the only one who is going to read it, isn't that what thinking is for? It's madness" -Qurtz.

This exercise tests the headquarters' ability to control simulated troop formations within a challenging and dynamic fictional scenarios. The scenario planned for AF 15 provides exercise evaluators with the ability to merge realistic global security threats into one environment to challenge and test the ability of headquarters personnel to devise innovative and pragmatic solutions. This is made all the more challenging, as they will be deploying in the middle of a Baltic winter in tents and field conditions.

I had to take Maximus to the ER vet last night. He was choking and retching and just looked pitiful. Long story short, he has a respiratory inflection and they think it may be kennel cough. Weird because I got him from a breeder and not a pet store, but I guess it can happen to the best of dogs :/

Anyways, he's on the mend with some antibiotics and lots of snuggles!

"los angeles, i'm yours" - the decemberists

There is a city by the sea

A gentle company

I don't suppose you want to

And as it tells it's sorry tale

In harrowing detail

It's hollowness will haunt you

It's streets and boulevards

Orphans and oligarchs

And here's a plaintive melody

Truncated symphony

An oceans garbled vomit on the shore

Los Angeles, Im yours

Oh ladies, pleasant and demure

Sallow-cheeked and sure

I can see your undies

And all the boys you drag about

An empty fallow fount

From Saturdays to Mondays

You hill and valley crowd

Hanging your trousers down at heel

This is the realest thing

As ancient choirs sing

A dozen blushing cherubs wheel above

Los Angeles, my love

Oh, what a rush of ripe elan

Languor on divans

Dalliant and dainty

But, oh, the smell of burnt cocaine

The dolor and decay

It only makes me cranky

Oh, great calamity

Ditch of iniquity and tears

How I abhor this place

It's sweet and bitter taste

Has left me wretched, retching on all fours

Los Angeles, I'm yours

Los Angeles, I'm yours

Los Angeles, I'm yours

I am frequently asked about the dangers of bringing my camera to the beach. Sand and water can be a great cause of concern when it comes to photographic equipment. I live at the beach and I enjoy taking photos while there, whether it be of the often found sandcastle, the shells which have washed a shore, the sun setting behind the dunes, or the dogs playing in the waves. I am as careful as I can be and fortunately for I have my older yet very functional camera. I generally bring this one, leaving my prized D7000 safely at home.

This evening the tide was low and calm, B and I took the girls over for a swim. For some reason us humans can not fully understand, the mussel shells were of particular interest to Yellow Girl. Not only for sniffing but before we knew it and before we could pry open her mouth, she had ingested several. I was certain they would pass through by the morning and we went about romping and playing.

Back at the car, I gave the girls a drink of fresh water to help wash any sand and ocean water out of their mouths. We gathered up the leashes, towels, water bowl, camera and 4 legged friends and started back to the main land. When suddenly there was a loud retching sound and the splatter of water, remains of mussel shells covered the car seats, camera and lens.

Next time I am asked about the dangers of bringing my camera to the beach, I may think twice.

submitted to ODC/ topic ~ "W" for Water; ocean Water, fresh Water and Water all over my camera!

My brother's room was a few doors down from this 24 hour nurses' station.

My brother had a gastric tube installed in order to directly pour nutrition into his stomach. He hated to eat and would, what seemed to be intentionally, retch and vomit his food. Before his g-tube instillation, I remember my mother sorting through the vomit to find the Phenobarb. It was a barbiturate he took to prevent Grand-Mal full cardiac arrest seizures. It was quite addictive and often abused. They came in a counted blister pack and could not be replaced.

The G-tube itself was a simple elastic tube which went straight from the outside to the inside of his stomach. It a little plastic cork was inserted in the end as a closure. The tube was bent and a rubber band was wrapped around it for added measure or it was supposed to be.

One day my mother was called to make the several hour journey to Lanterman from where we lived. The cork had come loose in Shaun's g-tube and the stomach acid and covered his torso. By the time she arrived, he was clean, but writhing in pain. A tear fell from the corner of his eye as he looked at her. She asked if he may have some aspirin.

The majority of his torso was scarred. A few doors down from the 24 hour nurse's station in an acute facility.

#4139 121/365 2021

We went on a geocaching walk near Heath and Reach (or heave and retch as I generally call it!) and took in a different section of the canal from my usual. It was a cloudy and overcast day, but sometimes you take advantage of what you have been given

I wonder if the stem ring is too low...

This is definitely an aminita mushroom, the same family as the mushroom known as the Destroying Angel. Destroying angels means business for those unfortunate enough to eat it: your organs turn to mush. YIKES!

You see, amanitins, one of two kinds of poisons found in the mushroom, block DNA synthesis. I quote from one of my field guides: "After one or two days, the victim may improve enough to leave the hospital and pass the whole episode off as a bad case of the flu, but unless intensive treatment began early, the progress of poisoning, and then end are inevitable. Retching, diarrhea and cramps return and are followed by liver and kidney failure, convulsions and a painful death."

See where this picture was taken. [?]

Another day that I can't talk about for privacy reasons. Hence guest photographer John.

I don't know what it is, but a lot has been going miserably wrong lately. What is typical though is that I can read physical cues. Unfortunately, I embody those cues and learn what's going wrong from how I feel when seeing those cues.

No, I'm not psychic. Just a lot of drama training with those freaky blank masks. I'm now miming to my computer to show you what I mean, but that's not going over so well.

It's kind of like if you're around someone with an accent, you start mimicking them. I'm retched at that. People assume I'm making fun of them.

The bad part of picking up on what peoples' emotions are is that I can't care for them if I'm feeling what they're feeling. I've learned the routine though. Kleenex, hug, and privacy. And now damage control.

I know that they're not my problems (except for the damage control part), but the rest is instinct. And it's starting to suck me dry.

But I ended on a good note with my little friend who is so charming. This child does NOT like my arm brace, so that has to come off. But it was hard to leave her as we negotiated when I would see her again.

Her: One minute?

Me: Tomorrow.

Her: Two minutes

Me: Tomorrow.

Her: No, five minutes.

Me: No, seriously. Tomorrow.

Her: Don't go to the office!!

Me: Yeah, that's the way to win a battle.

Her: Bwah ha ha.

(Need to re-shoot this. I couldn't find my tape which keeps ending up in weird places.)

This is the kind of happy-go-lucky look one has when they get to urinate in a bathroom that doesn't actively cause them to retch when they enter.

This is the restroom that the folks at the pooled center get to use. And I am jealous.
